Marshal van Trapp
so for a long time now i've been trying to limit myself to having just a few armies to keep myself from constantly repainting my SM or buying new armies, and i've finally gotten it down to 2, the first is a vile xeno not to be mentioned here (tau) while the other is more pertinent to this board, my Grey Knights I've had my grey knights for.... EVER, since the 3rd edition codex when they were part of daemonhunters, and its always just been them, i couldn't stand having a mixed type of army at the time so i opted for the purist route and decided on an ALL GK army, at the time however it was also the most expensive route, as EVERY SINGLE MODEL was metal and i had to buy them piecemeal after the first 5 or get stuck with 4 justicar bodies and not be able to differentiate, so i slowly bought each member for the 2 10man squads, the 5man terminator squad, and BC stern (because he was the ONLY important looking GK model at the time) and a retinue of termies for him, i got a dreadnought, got some forgeworld pieces for it, namely a TL Hvy bolter and LOADS of purity seals (mind you this was before there ever was a FW GK dread) and then gave them my LRC from my templars (since i had run out of funds prior to this point i had them share the tank) afterwards i started playing some games with them, by the time i'd finished collecting the army, 4th edition came out and i was playing a new army with new rules against seasoned and learned gamers who had old armies they knew well enough to convert easily to the 4th ed rule set, and i lost, a LOT, i even lost to chaos, an army i thought i'd be able to crush (and should rightly so if i'd read my rules better)! so i got discouraged and put them up, in a case in my garage shortly after 5th came out i tried picking them up again, but again was met with utter failure and shelved them, now with the arrival of their new codex, i hope to breathe new life into them by trying to make an army with which to play 40k once more (as i have not played at all for at least 2 years now) i realize that if i don't make them competitive i'm sure to lose to everything save daemons but i've given up caring about winning, i just want to play an army i like, that i painted myself and that i'm proud to call my own now if your still with me after my walls of text... i'm planning to use this thread as a blog of sorts to keep me on track and getting this army completed unlike my last 2 army ideas (see links in sig) so i'll post updates when i have them, also since i have the old metal models, i plan to mix the 2 generations, along with some converted models i will do (since i'm dirt poor right now and have a whole CHAPTER of BT that i no longer want to play i have plenty of models to convert) first and foremost i plan to repaint my models, not because i don't like the scheme i put on them, but because my skills have improved dramatically and i want to make them a better tabletop quality then they are already, also i want to try a scheme thats creatively my own. Instead of the usual gunmetal and gold they usually are, i'm going with a more traditional heroic-knight style color scheme, like paladins from D&D and the like, so without further ado here is my idea: obviously it will look different on a GK but we have a SM painter not a GK painter, also the red areas on his shoulder and knee will be his personal heraldry not just scab red and the gold on his chest will be the words and strange box like device on his chest (since he has no eagle) later i will post a pic of my current marines and show you how i did them but right now its kinda dark in my room and my camera is still charging, so i'll reset all those and have pics up later tonight in the meantime C&C on the test for my marines and lemme know what you guys think i should do with them Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/226424-grey-knights-redux/ Share on other sites
Marshal van Trapp
ok so here are some images of my GK's at current hopefully everyone can see them, its my first time uploading to the B&C album so i hope i did it right please ignore the gundams hiding in the backgrounds, the foul human traitors have decided to use xeno tech to fight! first an overall: next the blades squad, squad Alaric: and the Hammers squad, squad Dvorn: yeah long before there were nemesis daemon hammers, i had nemesis force hammers, based upon the GK series, the squad is even lead by dvorn one of the GKs from the series, it was actually my inspiration for getting the army altogether and my terminators, Stern and squad Tankred: and finally a close-up of Stern: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/226424-grey-knights-redux/#findComment-2711575 Share on other sites
Marshal van Trapp
wow so many views but no comments? well here's an update, just 2 pics, i've started converting GKT from regular SM ones, following several different guides i've found online and using them all together with a reference model to make it look correct, so without further ado i present the first stage of my GKT conversions and a closeup shot: i plan to GS the tops of them and put the psychic hood on there then add the heads which i cut down to look like GK helmets which look like so: made these heads following USABOB's tutorial here: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...showarticle=231 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/226424-grey-knights-redux/#findComment-2712016 Share on other sites
Marshal van Trapp
i despise bumping my own page so much i would like some feedback, also i have realized that the GK box comes with more than enough arms and weapons for 2 squads, i plan to get one box and use the pieces from that to fill in my 2 squads and make a purgation squad, along with a sanguinary guard unit i got when i was on the fence about BA, with all the extra arms i get i can easily then convert my excess SM into GK (seeing that i have plenty of helmetless or knight heads from playing BT) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/226424-grey-knights-redux/#findComment-2712824 Share on other sites
hendrik
well i'm not entirely sure since the sheme will look so different on a grey knight than on a SM. are you intending to make the white like marble white or will it have some dirt upon it? on another note, isn't it cheaper to just get the new grey knights kits to make more termies then to make them out of SM terminators? Foolio_Displasius
Hey Marshal van Trapp, I dig the proposed color scheme and overall effort to get your old models table-ready again. Although the pain of dealing with so many metal models must be significant! I'm also engaged in the fine art of converting some Terminators to match the modern GKT box. If you'd care to share links to the guides you're using, that would be awesomesauce. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/226424-grey-knights-redux/#findComment-2713385 Share on other sites
Marshal van Trapp
well i'm not entirely sure since the sheme will look so different on a grey knight than on a SM. are you intending to make the white like marble white or will it have some dirt upon it?on another note, isn't it cheaper to just get the new grey knights kits to make more termies then to make them out of SM terminators? @1st Q: it will be a white marble color scheme but it will be dirty and splattered with Daemon and traitor blood as my marines have been jumping in and out of real space battling daemons where ever they go (kinda like draigo, darn GW writing staff for stealing my idea lol) @2nd Q: not considering i HAVE 5 TDA and gs only costs $10 to the $50 GKT box, plus i like converting models ha ha Hey Marshal van Trapp, I dig the proposed color scheme and overall effort to get your old models table-ready again. Although the pain of dealing with so many metal models must be significant! I'm also engaged in the fine art of converting some Terminators to match the modern GKT box. If you'd care to share links to the guides you're using, that would be awesomesauce. :) well considering i dealt with them once and have had all metal armies well before this i think i will be ok i found an interesting guide online lemme see if i can find the link i'll edit it in when i can locate it EDIT well that was easy, found it here on B&C from this tut: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...howtopic=189031 and the other is obviously in my first post although as you can see i am planning to cut down the backs to make them look more like old school GKT Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/226424-grey-knights-redux/#findComment-2714534 Share on other sites

Redemption2994
I havent been around long enough to recognize the older generations of models, but I'm sure itll make alot of people smile to see Grey Knights that don't look completely the same as the new out of the box sets. On another note. Those are some really cool power weapon designs! I might have to borrow that for when I put together some Bloodletters, it reminds me of lava cracks in the blade.
