Wow, this Tony Kopach is amazing for a 17 year old, looks like he will need a chaperone for the ETC :(

Njal and the Wolves reign supreme which means everyone is going to be gunning for us at tourneys. I love how they put the 2 Wolf players to make the final up against each other. The used the old HIGHLANDER tactic of there can be only one and I get that joke if you are running the biggest tourney in the US, you have to spread the love.

Ok, did a quick check and this video is the actual final match.

SW list highlights (this just comes from the Independent Characters guys verbal summary, so it's a bit rough):

NJAL as HQ choice. (Yeah, that's right. I think he's in PA too, or at the very least on foot)

WG unit with combi-meltas across the board, leading the GH packs (unclear how many, though)

4 squads of GH, 2 in Rhinos, 2 in Razorbacks - melta in the Rhinos, flamers in the Razorbacks (yeah, that's right. Again.) Ever popular Las/plas Razorbacks, though.

3 squads of LF, 4 ML each.

EDIT: There was also a 5-man Wolf Scout squad with a meltagun (not sure what else is on these guys, though)

Here's his list:

Njal

5 WG with CMelta and Fist, 2 of them have Meltabombs aswell

5 scouts with meltagun,

2x8gh meltagun and standard in Rhino

2x7gh meltagun and standard in Rhino,

2x5gh flamer in las/plas back,

3x5fangs with 4missiles

The Guard army doesn't seem to be the usual Chimera/Vendetta/Hydra/Manticore build that ends up on the top tables - it had a Russ and Hellhounds in it.

That Tony kid seems to be a good player. Its a pity he won't be taking the ETC spot as I would have liked the opportunity to play him. Afaik the Nid player that ended up in the Top 8 (Top 4 even?) is taking the spot for the US team.

Here's hoping my Wolves get the chance to stomp all over them. ;)

What on earth was the Imperial Guard player doing?

I don't want to take anything away from the kid with Space Wolves, but the Imperial Guard player feeds 3 of his tanks to the Space Wolves right at the start.

He just keeps bringing stuff forward, right into the jaws of the Space Wolves army.

No wonder he died.

I like this win because it's no where near a "cheese" list or anything. The only thing that could possibly be pointed to is the inclusion of Njal, but he is far from considered an OP character (many on this forum consider him over-costed for what your get). The list very much shows that "the player wins the match, not the list." It's also not something that a bunch of "net bunnies" can just copy, bring to their FLGS, and win a bunch of games. It's a list that really does require skill and tactics to win with. Good stuff, this is what 40k should be all about.
Nice to see a running video of the game but the "commentary" was terrible! They were more chatting with each other than telling us about the game...

This. I understand that it can be hard to see what is happening, but then dont have commentary. Get a better view for the commentators or dont have them.

I (sort of) know the IG player, and I can tell you he was friggin exhausted. All the games they played that weekend, plus a group of friends from a forum played in a lot of side stuff... plus the 'other' activities.

That being said, I'll see if Cole wants to chime in... I do know he thought in the opening moments he got pretty unlucky being unable to crack a rhino.

Darkseer I will say that to get at that point in the tournament, you gotta know your stuff to get to that final game. Perhaps from Cole's point of view he felt he had to stick his neck out to get the Rhino's down?

Too bad Cole ended up playing a friend of mine early that day.... I would have been very curious to see my friend's BA against that Wolf list. It's just the way the chips fall sometimes.

Yea I can't get into details on what Cole (IG player) was doing the night before... but I'm sure at least half of it couldn't be posted here. :)

As a side note, the thing that absolutely blows me away about the Wolf guy is the inclusion of Njal..... wow. What a shot out of left field is that? I tried him numerous times (but the new Termie model only. The old model screams "I ride horses too often"), and I found I'd just usually rather have 2 RP's and have some points left over instead.

How many points was this exactly?

1850. Here, I put the full list into Army Builder:

If I had to guess, I would say he was picked up for versatility. In a tourney you don't know who or what your going to be facing. With Njal, as far as psychic powers go, you know you are going to have the power you want to have, where you want to have it, when you want to have it. Granted there are generally only 4 psychic powers that are really used by SW players so 2 RP can have you covered for less cost, but with Njal you know that all the powers you want are right there.

Sorry you felt that way about the commentary. Interestingly enough the response we have gotten to our coverage of the game was overwhelmingly positive. Was it perfect? No. Terrible? I don't think so.

We can obviously use some more practice at it - and we intend to do this kind of coverage at more GTs coming up as well. So I imagine we will continue to improve at it. Thanks for the constructive criticism!

The solution for you Natanael is simple though - just mute the video =D

haha, yeah, I ended up doing that. But I dont like watching streams and having a sound that is compleatly non-related. Feels... well, strange or something. Wrong :D

But as you say - it was not perfect, but not at all bad. A lot of the commentary was also kind of drowned out by the crowd talking/shouting in the background. You cant stop them from doing that, but perhaps there is some way of minimizing the stuff that get into the mic.

I'm looking forward to more of this, tough. Just trying to help making it better.

Yes, I was disappointed to see some of the negative comments on that. I was anxious to read the Space Wolves blog report and they dogged (pun intended) the commentary as well.

I just want to say for the record I thought the commentary was fine. If I were being picky, I just wish inbetween comments on how you guys felt the tournament was run, you could have let us know a little bit more about what was going on. For instance, I asked Cole afterwards what was happening in those opening turns (because on camera all we see is movement. We can't hear the players all the time or see the dice.)

Cole shed some light on the terrible luck in had in the beginning trying to crack the rhino's, and the -amazing- bad luck he had with the Psyker squad.... none of which made it across on the video. BUT that being said, that is my only criticism. Positives on the commentary included the background of the players.... and the discussion of how the rest of the week went. The discussion on how you guys handled terrain with the current LOS rules.

I enjoyed getting some background on the week's events since I couldn't be there. Thanks for that.
