Little history on why I chose grey knights

I read the book and just after the announcement came out that they were re-launching the Grey knights and I thought right will finally make an army.

That's it really, so onto my problem

I got the codex and a box GKPA's and last night was looking through the book and thought omg B) I got no idea where to start here

But I built the Justicar with a halberd but stopped there as I thought I should get some advice before I make a complete mess.

I was hoping to build a force that would include an inquisitor and retinue giving the army a similar feel to that from the second book.

So far I have the five knights and AOBR dread and a Razorback transport

Although the book did not contain a dread or vehicles i have the models and thought that they would use them in a different situation.

In my thinking last night i would put the knights in the razorback but was unsure of weapon selection, was thinking a hammer, incinerator, dual weapons and a normal force weapon and storm bolter to go with the Justicar. I was hoping to make them a close combat squad with backup coming in my next few purchases.

Would the selection of weapons I have chosen be ok or have I already made a mess by building the Justicar?

if i was you i would give the justicar a deamonhammer and the rest of the squad halberds. make them purifiers in that case and give the razorback twin linked heavy bolter wich psybolts. that should give you a punch.

for the rest i would take some terminators in a squad of 10 as troop choice and a GKSS (10) in a rhino for some mobility and versitality.

Paladins are also kinda need and hard hitting but verry expensive in point cost. 4 of them can easely cost 260 points.

as you wanna go with an inq. take some spacemonkey's and veterans with melta/plasma guns and stick them in a chimera. then you have a cheap transport riding arround with 4 fire hatches.

a dread with twinlinked autocannons with psybolts should give you some well needed long range fire support.

hope this little advice helps you somehow.

important thing is to read the book carefully and go with what you like. altough dont geth to carried away with all those shiny toy's. as that is a commen mistake new players make B)

cheers

Don't give anything useful to the Justicar, if you screw up and get 'Perils' whilst casting powers, he auto-dies (as he has no invulnerable save).

You can field Inquisitional Henchmen, but you have give up a HQ slot and 100 points. I personally don't see the appeal (if people wanna field cheap armour spam and pack heavy weapons inside, Codex: Imperial Guard and it's tank spam is right over there), but you can do it. Just don't mix n match squads. Build them with a purpose and means to enact that purpose. An example;

3 x Servitors w/plasma cannons, 2 x Jokaero, Chimera w/multi-laser+heavy bolter

(185 points)

Costs about the same as a melta-mech-Veteran squad in an IG army, brings anti-tank and anti-infantry. You can easily take multiples of this and use them to de-mechanise opponents (ie blow up all their Rhinos/Raiders/Devilfish/Wave Serpents etc). Then just dump plasma cannon onto the exposed infantry.

- 3 x Banishers w/eviscerators, 5 x Death-Cult Assassins

(150 points)

Not done here, because you'll need in Fast Attack;

- Stormraven w/twin multi-melta, twin lascannon

(205 points)

Attach Coteaz/Librarian to them (for 'Hammerhand' boosting and Ld10), zoom up the field and assault enemy infantry. 5 Deathcult should be more than enough to cut down Space Marines with impunity, the Banishers are there to break tanks or bail you out of combat with walkers (who will hopefully only squish a few Death-Cult before you cut them up with S8+2D6)

In terms of building power-armoured Knights, the only two squads I'd consider are either Purifiers (in small games you'll need Crowe to make them Troops, in larger games you can replace Crowe with a Grandmaster) or Strike squads.

For Purifiers, 5 halberds, a hammer dude, then four psycannon dudes. Add a Rhino, there is your objective clearing and holding squad.

For Strike squads, a master-crafted hammer on the Justicar if you have the points, then everyone else with swords (except the two psycannon dudes). It's not worth upgrading infantry with 1 attack base, just keep them cheap.

Thx Guys

slighty different views on the Justicar but since i glued and built him now :( he seems a halfway choice to what you sugested pointwise, will have to dig out the razorback box and find the bolter built it with a lascannon but i did not glue it for this reason..built it a long time ago now it the older style one

Reclusiarch was looking at a close combat unit for the inquisitor in a transport so ty for the help on what to use, i can drop them just wanted to use them as flavour for the army.

once again all help is very much welcomed ..... 40k can be a mine field when you compare it to FB, mine you i guess it could be the same the other way round
