Asmodai78
hey all, not to sure is this is the right area to post this but my question is, has anyone noticed the size of the GW's minis getting bigger? for example i just finished painting some LOTD figures and something in the back of my mind kept telling me that these feel bigger to my old LOTD miniatures, so i drag them out and low and behold the new ones are huge compaired to the old ones hope the pic gives you an idea of what im talking about http://i374.photobucket.com/albums/oo190/asmodai78/IMG_0439.jpg has anyone else noticed this over the years?? Retrograde
Yeah there was a jump in scale when the modern plastics were released. It seems a lot of the metals since have still been slightly smaller than the plastics. That new lotd mini on the left does look nice and tall though. Olis
Iirc GW's 28mm models are sometimes referred to as "heroic" 28mm by the wider modelling community. ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/226544-minature-sizes/#findComment-2713745 Share on other sites
winterdyne
Yeah - GW / Citadel / Marauder miniatures as they were in the 80's were pretty much true 'heroic' 28mm miniatures (ie 28mm to the eyes on a Vitruvian man style pose). The 'heroic' in fact refers to the deliberate cariacaturing of anatomy - really big heads and hands, shorter legs - all to draw the eye to obvious features on a tabletop mini. GW have never paid particular attention to having anything more than an approximate scale though, and there's now been over 20 years of scale creep in their design department. The LotR minis, are true 28mm by comparison - anatomy is much closer to accurate - look how small the heads / torsos are in comparison to a Warhammer mini. chromedog
There is some up and down with the scales, but without a grand consistent scale, it's kinda hard to tell. GW scale is all over the place like a child's toys. No consistency anywhere. Hemal
Long answer short - yes there has been scale creep, much more so in 40K than Fantasy - look at STeel Legion metals vs Cadian and Catachan plastics - heck look at RBT01 beakies vs 2nd edition marines vs 3rd edition marines (which are basically the current ones) - I have a load of 2nd edition metal boided Mk 7s and these guys look noticeably smaller than their more recent counterparts. Fantasy models have remained pretty consistent in size since 4th edition, apart from cavalry which now generally use larger mounts and have more in-scale legs vs their 4th edition counterparts (compare teh EMpire barded steed to the Elven, Chaos or Bretonnian steeds o the latest models) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/226544-minature-sizes/#findComment-2715555 Share on other sites
Carmine_the_Wolf
The drift towards a larger scale for the SM models makes sense when you consider the fact that in the fluff the marines have gone from "guys in power armour" to "God Soldiers of the Emperor!" Leonaides
tho dont forget the middle guy is in a half-squat compared to the one on the left... But I'd agree, take a modern plastic (or even a metal) and compare it to something from '87-'93 and you'll see a big difference... Conandoodle
Look at the Logan Grimnar (or whatever the SW dude is called) model in comparison to your average termie. The model is brilliant .. one of the favourites .. but now he looks like the runt of the litter.
