Custodian Athiair
Hey I've always loved Stern's background, the fact that he refuses a promotion because he doesn't want it to get in the way of the Chapter as a whole is so noble! He's rules seem as good as always and as beneficial to his army as the enemies yet is see a problem. the fact that the Grand Masters: Grand Strategy rule is so good and useful; and he doesn't have it. Also what about his psychic power it seems like he could end up killing his own protection squad in the process of killing the enemy. So what do you guys think about Brother Captain Stern? I personally love him and would love to include him in my army, but i think he's going to need backing up in the HQ department (and i don't want Stern and a Grand Master). So what do you guys think i should take to add to him and what squad to protect him... thanks for any information in advance Athiair :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/226582-brother-captain-stern/ Share on other sites
gil galed
I really see no use for him, in an army where you can get so much out of your HQ slots, be it Grand strategy, purifier troops, henchmen, Stern really brings nothing to the table. His zone of banishment is largely a liability to your own troops while his re roll while fun and fluffy really isn't game changing. I personally never used him in the last book and don't see myself ever using him this book. It's a shame because as you say his fluff is cool (distinctly better than Draigo / Mordrak / Thawn - guess why?). Add on to that he's 200pts and for 50pts less you could just get a standard BC, sure he doesn't have zone or Mastery lvl 2 but you can give him nice weapons or MC stuff. Or better yet spend that 200pts on Mordrak who will probably do more. Or Crowe. If you want fluff then go for it. But personally i'd prefer to GM who counts as Stern. :D. ~Gil :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/226582-brother-captain-stern/#findComment-2713778 Share on other sites
Gentlemanloser
The only time I ever used him was ot get access to another 10 Termies. I doubt he'll ever get used in the new Dex. Why take someone who can give your opponent a reroll. And if you want his Psychic ower, just get a Libby with Warp Rift. Sure, it's I over S, but can auto pen vehicles as well! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/226582-brother-captain-stern/#findComment-2713815 Share on other sites
Custodian Athiair
it's the rules that make the fluff real, that is the problem :( such a shame, i really want to play him in friendly games! and that's the important thing for me is enjoyment not wiping the floor with people! i am going to be making some lists with him in, and i will be posting them eventually, on here for you guys to tear to shreds ;) yes i do agree he's not perfect but i'm a huge fluff player, which is why i want to play him. and going along that fluff line that is why i'm not a huge fan on people using Grand Masters in every lists, because it says that Brother-Captains are the ones that lead the majority of excursions, while the Grand Masters are only for the most serious of daemonic out-breaks. which is why i would never really field a Grand Master in anything other than (at least) 2000 Athiair  Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/226582-brother-captain-stern/#findComment-2713817 Share on other sites
Reclusiarch Darius
But Brother-Captains are fail. Just take a Grandmaster and 'count-as', it not like anyone will care. Stern is so much fail, and the worst part is he was our 'go to' character in the last codex. Wanted another pseudo-GM with his brain-fry pimp-cane and Terminator bodyguard? Take Stern. In this codex, it's more like 'oh you don't like having friendly models nearby. He wants to play with teh friendly Daemons himself'. Cast 'go away meanies'. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/226582-brother-captain-stern/#findComment-2714021 Share on other sites
