Order of the Silver Hand Jump Pack Chaplain

I found him on ebay, packaged with another old school white metal chappy, for less than $10 for the pair. Who is this bloke?

Anyways.

Shots of the WIP:

Idea being that he can use his reinforced lightning claw as a ballistic shield, jet directly into oncoming fire with that massive steel plate protecting him, and smash the almighty sh!t out of whatever had the stones to shoot at him in the first place.

Secondarily I'm working on just a random marine scraped together from bits I had lying around after putting together my Sternguard and a handful of tacs; I wanted it to look like he'd just emptied a mag, and had ejected the clip... but rather than reloading, he's swapping out for his bolt pistol, because whatever he wanted to kill isn't quite dead enough yet:

In my head, he has named his custom chainsword Susan. I do not know why.

biker chaplain iirc

as for the clip, cool idea, but when (or if) you drill your barrels, use the drill to hollow our the clip - giving it the 'spent mag' look.

love the sense of motion in the models though

Not the biker chaplain, but the foot chaplain upon which (I'm pretty sure) the biker chaplain was based (same original sculpt with alterations if my eyes are any good at all).

It's one of 4 Jes Goodwin chappies released together back when 2nd edition was still pretty much shiny and new.

The other three are worth getting too.

Sigged.

I really like the poses you've captured with both Marines. I'm perplexed, though, why the Chappie is sporting a lightning claw. That's not game-legal, is it? Also, he can't use it and his Crozius together.

It is sooooo not game legal at all. That model is strictly Rule of Cool. (Have two game legal chaplains, one with JP, one without.) This guy, though, with his yelling screaming angryface jogging action, he just.... needed... a lightning claw.

Quick update on the status of the minis:

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a126/JohnnyK3886/Oh%20Dear/ChapWIP.jpg

Color is blocked out and layer 1 of highlighting is done up rough

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a126/JohnnyK3886/Oh%20Dear/ChaplainWIP1.jpg

I'd say on the whole he's about 30% done.

My white is a little thick, I just switched to a new brand of white (my GW kind kept just... hardening up. It was driving me nuts) and I am still getting my sea legs, as it were.

Quickdraw and Susan are coming along as well:

I'm posting Quickdraw's WIP mostly because my method of back-layer coloration with ink overlay to shade looks completely and totally ridiculous at this stage. Look at the poor bastard.

I'm back to the bench, looking to finish these guys by tonight or tomorrow. Talk to meh!

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, Quickdraw and Susan are finished - the photo quality is rather poor, sorry (I took them with my worklamp on and some of the light fuzzed a lot of the pictures. I am posting the ones that actually came out essentially not totally screwed up. Go work light! Go me! Stupid! Yay!)

And here's the chaplain! Easily one of the more dynamic models in my army. I still can't believe I got him for roughly $4. I love ebay, man. On the whole I think I could have been more liberal with the lowlit highlights on black - it's kind of sexysubtle but in the pictures it just kinda... looks flat. Next time I have occasion to do black armor I'm altering my approach so it's a little more exaggerated and noticeable. The model on the right is also finished, and is the other chap that came in the bundle.

FAITH IS MY SHIELD. NO. FOR REAL. I NAMED HER FAITH.

Okay... your purples and greens need another layer - they're looking a little blotchy.

The purples are intentional. It might not come across in the photo, but I do a series of thinned inks overtop yellow and white to get a progressively less intense highlight for purple areas:

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a126/JohnnyK3886/Sternguard%20w%20Flash/SergeantGabranth.jpg

^it ends up looking like that - which is pleasing to me. (By all means if you don't like it, then I accept your criticism)

as for the green, I believe you are correct. For power weapons I do a white base, followed by Scorpion green, which is inked with really thin Dark Angels green. Following that, I follow a basic iteration of the "Lightning" tutorial found here on the B&C; and then I ink it again to tone down the contrast... but it doesn't seem to be quite what the LC needs. What would you suggest?

I can't tell what the left shoulderpad is supposed to be, which kinda sucks as the viewer.

Your posing is really good, by the way, and I think I realised why you named the chainsword Susan after you joked about his shield being Faith

FEMALE BATTLEGEAR FOR EVERYONE

Honestly I was thinking of the quote from Dawn of War "My faith is my shield!" when I did it, but in truth your version of my thought process is funnier.

As for not being able to see his shoulderpad, I echo your thoughts - it was the first thing I said aloud when I got the model. "Damn, with the jump pack, you can't see the sweet detail over here,"; it's a giant skull and wings. Nothing out of the ordinary, but really well sculpted and executed. Shame really. :\

Well, short of advising you to redo the green areas, I don't know. :)

Perhaps ink the green areas lightly and highlight them? Sorry, that's all I got right now. :)
