Grey Knights: Army Builder

Recommended Posts

Hi

As anyone who uses Army Builder will know, the GK aren't yet available in the English 40k system. Where it is however available is the French version (also available for free to anyone who has a current AB liscense). I spent an hour or so translating the French version into English (more or less), so that I could write up quick army lists... And I thought I'd share my work. Clearly all credit should go to Bovée Frédéric for putting together the french 40k system for AB. I have only translated what is required to actually write a list; the majority of rule snippets etc are still en Francais.

DivShare File - Chevalier.dat

DivShare File - Warhammer 40K.def

The first thing you need to do in order to use this translation, is (buy army builder) replace the file "chevalier" in the AB data folder. The default pathway for this is C:\ProgramData\Army Builder\data\Warhammer40K. If that's not the directory, try firing up ABCreator (included with AB) and see where it points you if you try to open a file; beyond that, you're on your own. If you've never used the French version of the 40k system, this should be suficient, although you will be stuck with the french abbreviations for WS,BS,S,T etc. Thats where the second file comes in. Put this in the same directory and it will change the headings to their english counterparts, and if you have used the French version before, it will remind AB to recheck for all the new names (at least, this is my experience of it). If you want to remove my translations, simply manually update the system from within AB, and it will overwrite my changes.

I will also say, that the list making facilites are not perfect, being only the first version since the book was released, but if you find a bug I *do not* want to hear about it, because it is not my creation. Be greatful instead that you can do most of your list building on your PC where previously it was pen and paper only. There are also one or two words (namely the weapons for the Storm Raven and, Troops, Fast Attack, etc) that I simply couldn't change. Either because it would break things or I couldn't find the entry. I did try, and I deemed it not a good use of my time to continue though.

Obviously also, this will become obsolete when the English version of the 40k system gets updated, but I did this because according to their website, it wont be until next month (which is fair enough, given the amount of work required).

I hope posting this up dosen't break any rules, though I did check and couldn't find any obvious infringements. Although this does includes a multitude of rules, they are only accessable to people to pay to use Army Builder.

I was able to make my own army builder software thankfully, so I never have to wait on others.

I could post a version if the mods are ok with it? I'm not sure on the legality. You definetely need a codex or good knowledge of it to make the list, as the interface doesn't list what each weapon option does as such, but the print-outs do list stats and most of the rules.

Hello,

I have a paid version of AB, so I imported the French 40K file. Before I even add your files, I loaded it up, and I don't see any units at all for any of the armies.

If I look at the stock dat with the editor, I can see the dats are good. I believe the path is correct (although I could be wrong) because the import shows the location/folder of the files. Anyone have any ideas? I loathe doing my lists the old fashioned way, so any ideas are appreciated. :P

H

That threw me at first too.

It's not quite as intiutive as the Eng version, but it does make for much easier editing when you want to change something. I had originally intended to update the UK one myself, but it didn't take me very long to realise that with little experience in the software and the particular setup, it is too intricate for me to work with. Figured I'd wait, but then I realised the French version would have all the work done already bar the language.

To be honest, I dont think the Eng version is delayed after release day for no reason. I think it's because it's going to take a fair bit of work to make it nice. And the guy who does it probably has a day job to boot.

++Edit++ Improved quality of English and sensemaking.
