Ghost Knights....That Aren't Ghostly?

Although I think the general consensus about painting Ghost Knights is to make them look literally like ghosts, I'm not a big fan of doing that because frankly I think painting the whole model in the same color is a waste of the beauttiful models, and renders them totally useless if I'm not playing Mordrak.

Any suggestions on how to make them distinct yet able to stand in as normal terminators when i'm not using Mordrak? I was thinking of painting them in NMM instead of the usual metallics, or paint them to look literally "grey", or black like the Grey Knights were portayed in the old 3rd ed pre-daemonhunters Index Astartes article. Or gold instead of silver. I'm sure you guys have other suggestions though =)

Thanks!

An idea I had for this was adding some kind of effect that you can easily add or remove as needed. A matte grey twist of wire, with cotton stretched around it perhaps, slotted into a very small hole drilled through the termie's base between the legs would quite clearly create a misty or 'ghostly' effect for the model. If you kept the wire to about waist height, you could easily take it on and off as required.
Legion of the Damned color scheme?

All opaques and no metallics?

Haha yeah thats what I had in mind as I mentioned in my original post - literally "grey" kinda means like everything will just be muted non-metallics, or black, like the Legion just without the flame icons.

DeathKorpsman: I understand the vision of your idea, but I actually think it may be difficult to pull off.

Oh Jesus, the idea of Black Grey Knights with say, ice trailing wherever they walk, sounds like some of the coolest ideas for models I've ever has pass through my brain.

Eyes looking like their flaming, black armor with muted colors on the weapons and such, and ice after each footstep.

how about a white basecoat then watering down the colours so it semi shows through. that way they'd have colour but they'd also look washed out and pale and little bit ghostly. Also modelling wounds on the model would help (i.e a paladin carrying his head would look cool and ghostly) and broken weapons

Maybe just paint them as the other GKT in your army but mixing a bit of "Glow in the dark medium" (1/2 & 1/2) with the color you apply to the eyes and rune on your model. It won't change much the final aspect, but as soon as your mini is in the shade... it's eyes and runes will glow like your watch does!

Here is the medium I'm speaking of :

http://www.decoart.com/cgi-bin/Products.cg...the-Dark_Medium

Many hobby store or craft shop resell it.

On a side note, this compagny got some other interesting mediums like the perlizing one wich give an irridescent efect to acrylics.

Tchezz.

Nooo no no no. Ghosts have to glow or bear a minimum spookiness factor at least 3 to 1 of the living they associate with. It's in the Undead Union Rules.

......

Ok, so maybe I just like spooky/glowy/flashy ghost paintjobs. There was one done here not too long ago on LotD troops which used a sort of green and white haze coat with glowing firey orange bits on the gun barrels and flame sculpts.

Which I actually managed to uncover with a quick search (for once): http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...howtopic=209503

Of course if you rather avoid the hassle and paint them like normal GK, more power to you. Just casting my vote

I've tried Glow in the Dark before, it actually doesn't look very good (or very bright) when painted on unless you use A LOT of it, which makes it thick. Maybe the one you linked is different (the link is broken :D) but I really doubt it is different.

And I'm REALLY against pearl effects as they frankly make things look like they were moulded out of cheap plastic.

I've use it on a few minis like my Grandmaster (see my avatar) and it works perfectly.

Just mix it roughly half and half and it alter just a tiny bit the original color (making it a bit clearer). Then add some window cleaning product (or a water + 20 % alcool) to dilute the mix to the consistency you want... Voila!!!

But don't expect it to glow in day light! It will really show when your minis are in in the shadow the same way your needles' watch will.

Edit : I fixed the link a few post above

That's actually what I was thinking of doing. I was gonna pick up some of the new GKTs and then make some molds and cast them in "Water Effects" so they're somewhat clear. But to top it off I was gonna paint the heraldry on in somewhat muted colors. Not to mention the bolter flash.

=]D[=

im going to give them a purple (or green, still deciding) glaze to make them diferent from the rest of the blue-glazed GKT. Their weapons will be purple (or green, still deciding xDD) opposing the rest of my army being blue.

I dont like the Lord of the Rings' deads coloring, im not painting them white with green lughts to make them Casper like. I just want them to be regular GK with a different touch.

Fluff doesnot say that they are Terminators with a blanket on, boooh-ing people to death. They say they are a manifestation of other Grey knights. To me, that means "silver"

@Kay: The sheet over the head is a great idea! You could mod some with PVA glue and tissue paper and drape them over s model to get the form, then remove them when you want to play them as regular GKT's! Just pain on the black eyes and mouth and you got yourself a GKT ghost!
