Sable Claws- WIP Log

Recommended Posts

So I've started a new sm project called the Sable Claws. Their armour is going to be a dark gold/bronze colour with a lighter almost bone shoulder inset. This is my commander. Im using the SW codex and he is my counts as ragnar.

Pretty cool dude, the only thing I'd suggest is maybe tilt his chainsword hand a bit, so he looks like he has the blade in a 'guard' position. The up-and-down position that it's in right now looks a bit uncomfortable when compared with his body position. Keep it up bro!

Have you considered changing the helmet for the "wolf" helm from the Space Wolves sprue and extending the ears to more closely resemble a jackal? It is a little touch but one that might tie in with such a prominent character and the Chapter name.

Cheers for the coments. I tilted the hand slightly and it does look a lot better. @mikhail Im using that helmet in a conversion I have planned for a wolf priest so I didnt want both my comanders to have the same helmet. Ill try and get some more WIP pics up tonight.

So after a rather long break from the hobby. I found loads of unpainted and unassembled space marines. So I went out and bought the new space wolf Codex (Ive played space wolves since I started 8 years ago) and the new box set and started to think about an army. Im still undescdided on the full details of it but in escence it will have 2 wolf lords (with a counts as ragnar being one), A wolf priest and a Bjorn counts as for HQ. 40 Grey Hunters, 20 Blood Claws, 10 wolf guard another dreadnought and some other bits. So essentially an enitre company. i currently have the resources to build about 40 marines so will be purchasing a few more in the future.

I will Update over the next few days. I'm also working on an IA for the army so hopefully will have that up soon.

@wulfebane , the bases have resin bits from the GW 40k basing kit on them , its a nice little kit for basing actually

the wulfen , love the first guy , however do you have a more interesting helmet perhaps? it seems a bit plain considering the rest of his armour

I love the patina in the joints, but with all the white wash, everything looks a bit chalky (atleast in the first image). I would consider washing all the metallic armor with very thinned gryphonne sepia to punch up that goldish brass color, and perhaps coat the cloak in dheneb stone, then drybrush with white, and maybe dab with devlan mud in the folds/shadows, that way you shouldn't lose the fur texture with a flat color.

...it just occurred to me you're probably not finished with the cloak. If that's the case, ignore everything. >.>

@Barry. I quite like the contrast of the armour and the helmet. Its large flat surface draws the eye towards the head.

@Wulfebane I am not finish on the cloak yet, but thats for the tips I may use them when I paint it properly.

Here are four more marines. Three blood claws and a grey hunter.

I will be absent for a week but will try to finish my commander and post pictures up when I get back.

Also a quick question to you all. What should I opt for. Rhinos or Drop Pods and why?

Okay so here is my finished counts as Ragnar. I also just got my first forgeworld dreadnought (there will be two) so will pos a few pictures of the WIP of that soon. All comments and criticism is welcome. As I said above, Im unsure wheather to go for rhinos or Drop Pods. I want the army to be hard hitting assault so I want everything mounted in some way. Im favouring rhinos but I wanted to know if there were any big reasons I should go for Drop pods instead.

Cheers Doghouse much appreicated. It did take a lot of brown and black washes to stop it sticking out like a sore thumb.

Here is the dreadnought, It still needs arms and Im not sure how to adorn it and make it look more special. Any Ideas?

@ Ludovic: The verdegris effect was actually quite simple. Its a mix of 3:1:1 of Ice Blue, Enchanted blue and Snot green or there abouts just adjust the colour to what you personally want. ( I mixed a pot of it so it was easier to do for the whole army.) this is then mixed 1:1 with water so it is a very thin paint and it painted onto the areas required like recesses etc. Be careful not to use it like a wash don't just slap it on, I made that mistake at first.

@ Kvlt Ghost: The bronze is not too bad if you mix the base colour in a pot so you have enough. Its a 3:1:1 of shining gold, dark flesh and chaos black, you can always just adjust the ratio. This is then mixed 1:1 with shinning gold and painted in all but the deepest recesses. Shining gold is then painted pure onto all the raised areas of the model. The whole thing is then given a wash of 1:1 black ink and Devlan mud (watered down) . A highlight of 1:1 chainmail and shining gold is applied to the most raised areas and the whole this is washed with watered down devlan mud again. The verdegris (as described above) is then applied. Like I siad if you have the origional colour mixed up in a pot its not too bad.

Am currently painting 10 Blood claws and 10 Grey hunters and all are painted stage by stage so all have been base coated and first highlight done on all. Hope fully will have them done and pictures up soon <_<.
