Brother Morgan
You all know what the statue looks like straight from the box: http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20110408_39.jpg I converted one Honoured Imperial Space Marine statue for a previous Land Raider conversion. http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20110310_47.jpg I spent a fair few hours sculpting milliput to complete a "crypt" like appearance. Although I like the model, there were a number of faults that I believe I can correct: 1) The Space marine is bow legged/knock kneed!! I cannot believe any person would stand like this. 2) Would prefer to have a Space Marine helmet rather than face. 3) I like the double handed stance and wanted to do this. 4) Different weapons: Double handed sword, hammer. 5) No backpack. I want mine to have one fitted. 6) Dislike tabard/cloak. I want to sculpt the legs without anything getting in the way and masking them. So with the list above in mind, I chopped up the statue: http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20110408_40.jpg As you can see, there are huge chunks of missing detail that I will need to sculpt. The milliput blob at the top is the start of the Space Marine helmet. The other milliput piece is taken from a mould I made after sculpting the arm on my previous statue. I hope my idea's are up to my sculpting abilities. I plan to update this topic regularly with updates. This is going to be fun!!!!! Brother Morgan
Small update: http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/MargamPark09042011_50.jpg Not up to much at the moment, but the basic shape of the helmet has been started. http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/MargamPark09042011_54.jpg Still building the basic shape of the torso. The shield will be removed and a skull will be added in the near future. http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/MargamPark09042011_52.jpg Shoulder pad needs to be sanded down and the edging completed. I also want to add the recesses around the inside rim as well. I will attempt to mould this to save having to build another one. http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/MargamPark09042011_56.jpg The legs have been progressed the most. This front shot shows the correct stance that the original model should have had. Just need to sand the milliput down. I'm thinking of adding magnets to assist in holding things together as I slowly work my way up the Space Marine. http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/MargamPark09042011_57.jpg This shot shows the ribbed area that I have had to sculpt. http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/MargamPark09042011_58.jpg I just need to smooth the top trim on the top of the leg and add rivets to finish the right leg. I don't know whether to add a skull or some other symbol onto one of the knee pads. What do you think? Dominar_Mortis
looking good so far :( it could just be the angle but the right leg still looks a little knock-kneed, the left looks a much better stance any particular chapter your going for? as this will dictate what to embelish... Brother Morgan
As with a lot of my projects, I start something and get distracted when something bigger/sparklier comes along! I have recently purchased some Storm of Magic Magewrath Throne Skull Spire pieces from America and got to thinking what I could do with them (typical me - I like the look of something, buy it and then think what can I use it for!). After much thought (and upon buying a second skull spire!), I had a brainwave - put the 2 skull spires on top of each other to make a very large skull spire and then use this as a pedestal for my (to be) completed Honoured Imperial Space Marine statue!!! Genius!! How little did I know how long this would take to build and how much milliput I would need to smooth out the holes. This has now been completed (photos to be downloaded over the next few days). I then got to thinking about why build this skull spire statue? I have always had this idea of making a diorama of a Space Marine Hero being interred with an apothecary and a few servitors pushing a floating coffin into a vast room with row upon row of etched brass name plaques on limitless doors. I would use forced perspective to create the illusion and limit the amount of modelling. This is still something I want to build but then I got to thinking, could I use the skull spire statue in some way? What I have decided to do: The Legion of the Dead believe they will continue to serve the Emperor even after death in their version of valhalla. Rather than inter the fallen remains of their comrades, the battlebrothers/apothecary free their fallen brother's spirit by removing their head and return their skull back to their Homeworld's Fortress Monastry. All of the fallen brothers over the millenia will be kept in one highly revered place. To complete this, I want to: 1) Map and scribe flagstones on a A4 piece of thick plasticard 2) Enlarge an Imperial Eagle onto thinner plasticard to A4 size and then cut out and then glue over the flagstones. 3) Place skull spire in the middle of flagstones 4) Stick lots of skulls aound the base of the skull spire to represent the legion's fallen. I want to cover the majority of the A4 plasticard, but leave some space for the Imperial Eagle to be seen. 5) Finish off the SM statue. My questions to this site are what type of statue should I go for? Should I make it wearing a SM Helmet rather than helmetless? Should it represent a "standard" marine or a fallen "hero"? What weapons should they hold? Does anyone know how to make 'larger' bolters and backpacks? Any comments/critiques welcome. Regards, Brother Morgan. Chapter Master Ignis Domus
Go for a "sentinel" type statue. Have a helmet, preferably Mk. IV or V. It should represent a hero. He should have a sword and an ornate bolter. This sounds even more awesome... Brother Morgan
Photo update as promised: http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20111001_98.jpg http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20111001_97.jpg http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20111001_100.jpg http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20111001_99.jpg This is going to end up about 2 foot tall (if you include the statue and plinth). I'd better not glue it as I'll have great difficulty storing it in the future. I think I may attempt to make either a Mk2 or Mk3 variant as if you follow my fluff, this has been around for millenia and later versions of Space Marine armour wouldn't make much sense! I'll start cutting the flagstones and Imperial Eagle icon tonight. More updates will follow. Regards, Brother Morgan. Brother Morgan
Not much progress over the past few weeks. I'm doing some home renovation over the past 6 weeks - Damp proofing, wall ties, new wall render, building walls etc. I'm learning new skills all the time and in a perverse way, I'm really enjoying it!!! Here's the latest shots: http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20111029_4.jpg I decided to smooth out all the cracks over the skulls with milliput to give it a more pristine finish. I have finished the front of the "altar" (a mark 3, mark 1 and mark 4 space marine), just the 3 other sides to complete. http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20111029_5.jpg Still unsure what to put on the white plasticard "plinth". Any suggestions? The top of the altar will most likely have a large Imperial Eagle for the Space Marine statue to stand on. http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20111029_7.jpg A side view of the altar with a mark 2 Space Marine. Just need to add some skull pillars to complete. http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20111029_6.jpg What do you suggest I put on the underside of the plinth? I was thinking spotlights and sensor arrays. Any comments/critiques welcome as always. Regards, Brother Morgan. Brother Morgan
Progress update (apologies for blurriness): http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20111112_33.jpg I've decided to go back to basics and not use the Honoured Imperium Space Marine Statue as this needed to be a much earlier armour version. Therefore, I decided to sculpt from scratch a mark 2 armoured marine. I am quite happy with the legs so far. Just need to finish with a light sanding and then a couple of rivets (as per the GW version shown for scale purposes). The work in progress belt buckle can be seen in the background. I have enjoyed building this statue. My only concern are the following: 1) Back Pack. What style should I use? There are lots of different versions. Which do you think would be the most appropriate? I think I will build the one that came in packs of 3 on the sprue with shoulderpads and knives from the 90's (the one with 4 hoses on) 2) What to do with his arms? Do I have him holding in both hands (like the original Emperor's Champion) a chainsword or power sword? Should I sculpt a Bolt Pistol and chainsword combo? Should it just be him holding a Bolter as if standing guard? Other peoples thoughts would be appreciated. http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20111112_32.jpg Side shot. Getting late so time to finish and get some zzzzzzz's Regards, Brother Morgan. Chapter Master Ignis Domus
I vote the double handed hammer in the same position as the statue. That or an axe. Olis
I vote the double handed hammer in the same position as the statue. That or an axe. I'd second this, although I'd stipulate that I'd like to see it done in a way so that the head of the hammer is at the top and the handle at the bottom. ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/226962-honoured-imperial-space-marine-statue/#findComment-2922727 Share on other sites
Lestat
Impressive! That is going to be one almighty piece of terrain to fight over. A big, double bladed axe would look rather nice on the statue with the blades down at his feet and his hands resting on the pommel. BTW, I also think you are slightly mad - but there is a thin line between madness and genius :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/226962-honoured-imperial-space-marine-statue/#findComment-2923170 Share on other sites
Brother Morgan
Greetings fellow Bolter and Chainswordites! Some progress on my statue: http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1020947.jpg I've run out of rivets, so I put in an order to Tichy Train Group in America, so I'm not sure how long before I get them. The belt buckle will have a (surprise, surprise!) big skull sculpted out of milliput. I need to sculpt a metal band with rivets above the eye holes on the helmet and run more rivets down from his nose to his chin. I'm undecided on whether to add more rivets around his neck in a "V" shape and vertically up either side of his gorget. Any thoughts? http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1020944.jpg I am waiting for power cables to arrive from Zinge and plan on putting them at the top of his legs like the GW Mk2 Marine. A few more rivets on his right leg and his legs will be done. http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/P1020946.jpg Here's a shot of his backpack or as my wife calls them, his Mickey Mouse Skull backpack!! I need to add smaller discs to the "ears" to make more of the usual shape of a marine backpack. I also plan on putting box tubing sticking out at 45 degrees at the bottom of the eye socket/mouth, to again look like a normal backpack. I will also put mesh grills in the eye sockets to modernise the backpack. I already have both shoulder pads and arms made and have started to make a huge double headed, Imperial Eagle axe. I now have to sculpt the hands in a "hand over hand" grip to hold the pommel of the axe. I am loathe to stick anything else on the body yet as I am undecided on whether or not to cast this monster as it has taken me weeks to make this and I would like to make a couple more of these titans guarding over the walls/entrances to my Imperial Fortress/Palace that I intend on making some day in the future. Has anybody used any Casting Servive like Anvil Indusrties before? How have you found them? Are they reasonably affordable? I would like to make a knife and scabbard and holstered Bolt Pistol to complete the model. Thoughts and critiques welcomed. Regards, Brother Morgan. Brother Morgan
After 3 months of on/off work, I am finally happy with the finished shrine. Without further ado (apologies for the worksite behind!!), here it is: http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20111223_114.jpg Below are some close ups of the Space Marine Hero Statue: http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20111223_123.jpg His clasped hands were a nightmare. I'm not 100% happy with them, but can no longer spend anymore time on this monster as I have plenty of more ideas I want to move onto. http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20111223_117.jpg I used Zinge Industries power cables on his legs and tichytrain rivets on this model. http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20111223_118.jpg Here's a close up of the marbles I used for the backpack. http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20111223_124.jpg http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20111223_119.jpg http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20111223_120.jpg http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20111223_122.jpg http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20111223_128.jpg This shows the underside of the plinth decorated with Adeptus Mechanicus style skulls. http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff118/philmorgan75/20111223_130.jpg Finally, just to show the scale of this piece of scenery, fully constructed, it stands at nearly 18 inches! Take a look at the normal size space marine at the bottom. I have not stuck arms/shoulderpads onto the torso, as I want to make a cast of this Mark 2 Space Marine to use on other Space Marine scenery I plan on the future. I just need to save for a few months to be able to get the mould making equipment and resin. This will then lead onto: The Next Project: I am awaiting for 4 Shrine of Aquila Eagle heads and front of the buildings from America. With the Christmas post, I have no idea when they will arrive. I plan on using the 4 Shrine of Aquila fronts to build a bastion like building that will sit on top of a small hill (built out of polystyrene). There will be Eagles on all 4 fronts! If you can imagine an entrance at the bottom of the hill, flanked by Giant Space Marine statues, cut into the hill. Directly in front of any would be visitor/attacker, an assault cannon turret will be recessed into the wall. The path to the bastion entrance will then go 90 degrees to the right and will have another heavy bolter weapon emplacement recessed into wall. There will be another walkway covered by another heavy bolter and this will finally take the would be visitor/attacker to the entrance to the bastion. The walkways will be lined by normal sized Space Marine Statues. The "hill" will have the usual big skulls all around the base of the hill and will be at least 2 in height to prevent anyone from by passing the kill zones. For the jump pack brigade, I plan on having mines dotted all around the level of the entrance and a number of assault cannons/heavy bolter turrets to cut them down before they can land. At the top of the bastion, I plan on putting the Fortress of Redemption Heavy Weapon. This will probably take a couple of months to complete and I can't wait to start. Any questions/comments, please ask. Nadolig Llawen (Merry Christmas in Welsh), Brother Morgan. ShinyRhino
Wow. That's amazing work. How do you plan to paint it (marble, copper, steel)? Minor nitpick is the aquila on the axe...it feels heretical to see one displayed upside down, even though it would be right side up when wielded. It feels similar to hanging an inverted crusifix or something, at least on a 40K level. :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/226962-honoured-imperial-space-marine-statue/#findComment-2950407 Share on other sites
