My Astral Claws WIP

Recommended Posts

I've posted a couple of shots of this in the Index Astartes forum before, but thought I'd start my army blog here now my force is starting to expand.

Here is what I have so far:

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b76/angelofrage/IMG_20110409_234036.jpg

A few closer shots of the army, this includes an assault focused scout squad:

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b76/angelofrage/IMG_20110409_234111.jpg

A sniper scout squad:

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b76/angelofrage/IMG_20110409_234130.jpg

Ancient Kleitor (Venerable dread pictured in IA9...)

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b76/angelofrage/IMG_20110409_234117.jpg

and finally a shot of some of the HQs i've collected so far:

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b76/angelofrage/IMG_20110409_234139.jpg

This includes a small conversion of Gabriel Seth (used as a normal captain or Kor'Sarro Khan), Librarian (Ezekiel was missing his sword, so I had to add a replacement) and a chaplain (using the LotD sergeant with a wrist mounted storm bolter). Huron is lurking in the back.

Next on my list to add will be a terminator assault squad (once the FW shoulder pads are available), a couple of Las/Plasm razorbacks and some tactical marines to form the base of my force. I also love the Hector Rex figure and may get him to use as a terminator librarian.

Hoping to get the rest of my assault squad on foot finished this week, as well as make a start on the scouts.

Thanks for reading

Here are the 3 main men waiting for finishing touches such as final highlights on the blue, bases finished, transfers (hurry up FW!), etc.

Gabriel Sagan (ex Seth, counts as Carnac Commodus/Ko'Sharro Khan?), Lufgt Huron and Ancient Kleitor.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b76/angelofrage/IMG_20110413_195513.jpg

As for the rest, I'm about 75% done painting my assault squad on foot. Finishing touches need to be added to my LR Crusader and maybe 50% (no base yet) for my other dreadnought. Scouts are all 0% so far and are awaiting priming. I'm also waiting on my first Razorback to arrive so I can convert it to a Las/Plas version.

I'm afraid I've fallen in love with Forgeworld stuff now. Both my dreadnought and Huron are fantastic figures, so much detail and have that ornate look is ideal for the more veteran members of my force. Eventually I'd like to add a Mark IV rifleman dread, some terminator bodyguard for Huron with the (hopefully) soon to be announced FW shoulder pads. Also Hector Rex, who I may just use as a terminator librarian in game (with some Deathwatch themed Sternguard...? hmmm), it's such a nice sculpt.

Thanks for reading.

Bit of an update with a brighter shot of my force. Taken before my last game. No shots of the game as it was an odd list against an odd list. Both of us were proxying units to test things out. Battle shots will come once both our forces are not using proxies and at least partially painted!

The painted (well if you can call it that lol) army so far:

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b76/angelofrage/IMG_20110427_182814.jpg

Most things need detailing and extra time spent just for the minimum, some things are only done in basic colours with no washes yet (razorback for example). Huron and Seth are pretty much finished in terms of painting though. Bases need work and waiting on FW for their transfers.

Still on the to do list, my Hector Rex (will count as termy librarian with SS), painting my first 5 tactical marines (using old metal bodied marines from a friend to start with). My scouts are on the back burner as I don't see me using them in game for a long time against my current opponent.

I also have a number of things on order. This includes another razorback, parts to convert 2 Las/Plasma turrets for my razorbacks, a tactical squad and a couple of other random bits to play around with. I'm waiting on the FW shoulder pads before I get my terminator squad.

Thanks for reading and hopefully I'll have more done for the next update!

Hey Coopervisor

These minis are great. I love the colours, they work so well together. Your painting is very neat and tidy and i'd love to see more.

Only one 'negative' thing about your force is this:

............ Also Hector Rex, who I may just use as a terminator librarian in game (with some Deathwatch themed Sternguard...? hmmm), it's such a nice sculpt...................

Although Deathwatch fit the sternguard rules very well, i think it would be a missed opportunity for you to go a little overboard with some of your minis. The sternguard would be the perfect unit to add lion heads, purity seals, scripture and all these other yummy bits to a unit that aren't in TDA.

Cant wait to see your termis though

Good luck.

Cheers

I totally agree with Captin (LOL) Xavier here, Sternguard are screaming out for some badass lion imagery and major bling. Deathwatch are kinda 'meh' with their plain black armour.

Personal joke :D I spend way too much time on my orks and actually started spelling like them at one point. All my gamer buddies had a good laugh at my expense!!

Coopervisor:

Some of these on a few (or all) of the sternguard would look rather interesting

Thanks for the replies folks. I've actually been trying to keep an eye on the various bits sites for this:

http://www.bitsandkits.co.uk/high-elf-char...t-b-p-1478.html

Which I think would work well on the storm shields for my terminators. Just not seen it in stock anywhere yet and even then i'd need 5 of them :S

I think you're right about the deathwatch and the black armour. I'm in no rush for my sternguard gamewise (not even proxied them yet) so keep changing my mind about them. Part of me would love to use some FW Mark IV or V armour (or even the rumoured Mark VIII) along with FW shoulder pads. That's the problem with FW, once you own a couple of bits, you just want more and more!

Hey Coopervisor

I think I have a couple of those lying about (bought a high elf chariot for the lions lol) PM me and im sure i could help you out.

personally i feel they though be better on shoulder pads rather than shields, as they have a direction. I.e. they are looking forward, which gives the models a little more...... movement. I know it sounds silly, but it works.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Just won another game tonight, with these two leading my "deathstar" of TH/SS Termies in LR Crusader.

Lord Huron and Hector Rex (counts as Librarian with Terminator armour and a storm shield in games). Rex is still WIP and work needs doing on his cloak amongst other things.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b76/angelofrage/IMG_20110504_181030-1.jpg

I'm still proxying stuff that I am waiting on. (2nd Razorback is on order, as is tactical squad) *pokes Forgeworld to hurry up and release the Astral Claw shoulder pads*

Nice Astral Claws you have! I too would like some sculpted pads if the tyrants claw emblem but in the meantime it's great freehand practice.

Can I ask why Luft has a helm on?

Simple answer is I just aren't a fan of the bare head on Terminators. I managed to get a swap of Huron's bare head for Culln's helmet so that is what he ended up with.

Nice Rex and Huron, brother. Rex looks good in a Claws paintjob. Any plans for the bare shoulder pads?

I'm pretty terrible at freehand, so I'm waiting on the FW transfer sheet to be released, then I can finish the marines off.

Thanks for the comments folks. Always good to know I'm doing ok :(

Hey Coopervisor

Anything new coming up?

I must admit I think i'm with you on the bare head thing. Wasn't a fan of lugft's head to begin with.

Still loving the cleanness of your colours and i cant wait for you to get your paws on a FW transfer sheet

That bit arrived yet?

Hey, yeah it did thanks! Sorry, should have let you know, but been busy. Managed to find a couple more, so I've almost got the 5 I need.

Bit of an update as I'm here. I've broken my "counts as" rule and had a game using the BA codex. I'll be fielding a small elite force of jump pack troops eventually. I've got 2 units of 5 Sanguinary Guard made up, 1 is part way through painting. I've used normal jump packs, removed the majority of the BA icons and used more normal heads. No photos as yet, but will get some up soon.

So far my army consists of the following:

Lufgt Huron

Inquisitor Hector Rex (counts as Librarian with Terminator armour and storm shield)

Gabriel Seth

LR Crusader

2x Razorbacks (1 more Lascannon/Plasmagun turret to assemble, 1 is unpainted, 1 is 75% done)

Tactical Squad (assembled but unpainted)

Assault squad on foot (75% painted)

Sniper Scout Squad (unpainted)

Assault Scout Squad (unpainted)

Venerable Dreadnought

Dreadnought (75% painted)

2x Sanguinary Guard Squad (1 75% painted, other is assembled but unpainted), including a chapter banner bearer to be used if I take one in the list.

Hoping I can get a chunk of that painted before the end of the month, then after payday I should be buying some other bits. Terminator Assault squad is still on my list, but waiting on FW shoulders. FW power armour shoulder pads for my elites and FW Vanguard Vets squad from FW (seems to be no more expensive than getting the GW boxset)

Snapped a couple of shots of my "Sanguinary Guard" so far. I've tried to make the 2 squads look a little different in the poses, but not sure it's come out very well.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b76/angelofrage/IMG_20110518_184035.jpg

The plan is to add FW shoulder pads to these, once they're released.

My overall army is still played using the SM Codex, however I'm going to include a small elite force of jumpers (SG, VV, HG, Dante, etc) to be used with the BA codex when the mood takes me. Not sure what the "counts as" Dante will be yet, need to have a think about a suitable conversion.

That's all for now folks.

No worries, I'm glad to hear you're on your way to having them all.

The new sang guard are looking lush, I love the way their heads really stand out. Such a lovely gold colour.

Stoked on seeing a venerable dread, you should really deck him out with fancy yummy bits. The termis too, so long as you have all the bits you want, they will be a spectacle indeed.

Can't wait to see more!!

Well to celebrate the release of the Astral Claw sets from Forgeworld. I though I'd post a shot of part of my force as it expands...

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b76/angelofrage/IMG_20110601_184822.jpg

There is my 1500pt force (can you say too many points in 1 unit?!), which I won with this week against a friends Deathguard.

It shows some transport damage on the dreadnought's claw and inquisitor's sword

The terminators are basecoated and are sporting some nifty lion icons on their stormshields (Thanks Captin Xavier!). As soon my order of shoulder pads arrive, I'll be able to finish the terminators and my "Tyrant's Guard"

Also a quick shot of something I have come up with for a counts as Calgar if I ever need to fight without the FW rules for Huron:

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b76/angelofrage/IMG_20110518_231829.jpg

That's it for now, hope to get some shots up of the pads when they arrive.

Another long time, another update.

Here are a couple of photos of my units now the FW shoulder pads arrived (ordered the day they came out, took 2 weeks to arrive <_<):

Terminator squad, still PIP but getting there slowly.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b76/angelofrage/IMG_20110622_184625-1.jpg

"Sanguinary Guard" squad 1, pretty much finished now except for some highlighting on the blue.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b76/angelofrage/IMG_20110622_184642.jpg

My ultimate goal is to have two different armies. Both painted in Astral Claws, but one will use the BA codex (mainly drop pods, RAS, dreadnoughts, jump troops) and the other will be the SM codex (terminators, tacticals, mech, scouts, etc). Each led by a set of characters. Huron and my Inquisitor (TDA Librarian) are done as you can see. Seth counts as is done for the BA half, I'm also waiting on some others and still trying to come up with a good Dante conversion to lead the jump troops.

Next on my to do list:

I have a FW dread to paint, based on the Ironclad with Inferno Cannon, it'll be used as a Furioso dread with frag cannon. (I'm also planning two other furiosos for that list, one with talons and one librarian although still in the early planning phase)

Oh and the other stuff now piling up! Such as tactical squad, 2nd Sanguinary Guard and a razorback :S

Anyway thanks for reading and I hope to have some more updates sooner this time!

Couple of WIP shots of what I've been painting over the last couple of days, more FW goodness:

Siege Dreadnought, will count as Furioso Dreadnought with Frag Cannon

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b76/angelofrage/IMG_20110625_112622.jpg

He is the first of my planned 3 furioso dreads. The next up will be a twin DCCW/talon version based on the same Mark IV ironclad. Followed by a librarian version based on the Grey Knight Mark IV dread. I'm short on funds, so maybe a while til I can get my next one started.

Chief Librarian:

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b76/angelofrage/IMG_20110625_112609.jpg

Standard FW figure, just with an Astral Claw shoulder pad. I was in two minds whether to go for silver armour with a blue helmet, or stick to the codex more with blue armour. Lots of stuff left to highlight and detail, but as the bases colours are done, I think the scheme looks ok and isn't too far from the rest of my force (which contains silver, blue and gold anyway)

Bye for now.
