My Astral Claws WIP

Recommended Posts

Not much of an update, but I had a day off and took a trip to Warhammer World. Quite a good place to visit. Loved looking round the miniature hall and seeing some of the dioramas from golden daemon that I used to look at in white dwarf all the way back in the late 90s. Hoping to take a trip back at some point to have a game on the tables there.

Anyway I walked out poorer and the owner of another FW dreadnought...

Bluetaced together to get an idea of how it looks. Pretty happy with it and this will count as my other furioso dread in my counts as BA force. My other dreads are mounted on some resin bases, but I don't have one left for this new one. So I'm not sure how to go about creating a fitting base for him.

It looks bloody fantastic with two assault drills!

You know these things have built in flamers right? Your dread is armed with four of them now :P Crazy!

I plan to add one of these to my own collection of Dreadnoughts.

Care to tell me how the kit was to work with?

Lot's of imperfections and warped resin?

I see the targeter-thingy on the left side of the torso is slightly wonky just like in the stock photos from Forgeworld.

Should be easy to fix though.

Keep up the good work!

Sorry for the delay (been holidaying it up in Vegas!), but yeah no problems with the sculpt from FW apart form the twisted targeter as you said.

The only thing to note is that the assault drill shoulder has extra details compared to the others and as such the extra armour plate that comes with the ironclad Mark IV body won't fit flush without some cutting/filing. Luckily I had a spare basic shoulder anyway from another project so I didn't need to do this.

Now I'm back from Holiday I see FW announce a new fantastic looking dreadnought. I want one, but I may wait to see what other weapons/options are released for it, before splashing out. In the mean time I need to get the transfers and make a start on using them to finally try and fully finish parts of my force. I also wanted a Furioso Librarian Mark IV dread, based on the Grey Knight body and forceweapon, seeing the new DCCW for the contemptor, I may use that for the other fist. Will see once my bank balance recovers from my holiday.

MOAR STUFF!

Took a couple of quick snaps of my more recent stuff while setting up last night (from my "counts as BA half" of the army):

Chief Librarian (Mephiston)

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b76/angelofrage/IMG_20110713_185322.jpg

Tyrants Guard with Corpse Taker (Sanguinary Guard with Sanguinary Priest)

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b76/angelofrage/IMG_20110713_185345.jpg

And a shot of action:

I mucked up here, Mephiston cut through the prince in one round of combat and thus left himself open to get turned into swiss cheese the following round. Poor positioning and judgement on my part (casting both sword and unleash rage :S)

An early WIP shot of a new arrival:

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b76/angelofrage/IMG_20110725_142446.jpg

The base I ordered didn't arrive, so I can't get his legs assembled til I know how he is going to stand. Unlike my mark IVs that I was able to put together and add the base later as the legs are so static.

I did manage to get him all cleaned up and do a test fit on the arms, which are looking good. I did try a mark IV DCCW and a GK force weapon on there, but they looked a little small compared to these.

I need to crack on and finish painting some of the other units that have got left half way done and stop getting distracted by shiny new stuff to play with.

Well the arrivals I was waiting on turned up this morning. This was a Scibor 60mm base and some 1mmx2mm magnets.

Using these I was able to construct the following:

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b76/angelofrage/IMG_20110730_141809.jpg

That is to be used as a Honour guard in my BA list and I've got the jump packs magnatised, so I can swap them out and use them in my SM force as a command squad.

A full shot of the final pose I went for on my contemptor:

The base now just needs some sand and I can attach him and get him undercoated.

Finally a shot of my growing collection of dreadnoughts:

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b76/angelofrage/IMG_20110730_142039.jpg

Started with the mark IV venerable. Then two mark IV iron clads, which counts as furioso in my BA list. First with blood talons (assault drills), extra armour and magna grapple (short range missile launchers on top). Second with frag cannon (inferno cannon) and DCCW. Finally I have the contemptor armed with dreadfire arms (DCCW \ H Flamer) or can use him as Ashmantle himself. Next on the list is a librarian furioso and eventually I'd like some mark IV riflemen. Oh and another contemptor when some of the new arms are released. Some may call it an addiction :S

Anyway hope to get some more painting done this weekend, aiming for my 2nd tyrant (sanguinary) guard to be finished. But we'll see with the weather being so nice at the moment.

Thanks

Looks great, nice Scibor base too. And the plasma armed Red Scorpions Astral Claws look the business - lovely. :)

I too think I have a dreadnought addiction - I have at least five knocking about. There's something about them that makes me want more (much like Leman Russes and the like). I'd like to propose we get a name for our obsession - Dreadheads (much like tank nuts being Treadheads). :)

It is yes. Very happy with the way it's going together.

I'm slowly working my way through what I have sat round unpainted/undercoated. But always seem to get distracted by new toys :S

Here is a shot of how my contemptor is looking. Added some transfers and may try some weathering when I can borrow some of the FW powders.

Always the case that you upload a photo only to notice some of the (what look like) more obvious flaws. So I see this as helping me get better. (the bit of white grass on the knee, luckily wasn't under the transfer)

Love the Contemptor. Those Arms look F-ing Awesome. Quite like the Tyrants Claw on the shoulder nicked from Hurons banner. :tu:

I need some tranfers myself, painting them is slow.

Can't wait to see the Land raider painted. :P

Not much of an update I'm afraid. My Fantasy project has been keeping me busy. I did get round to assembling my Land Raider Achilles "Carus". Squeezed it into a couple of 1750 games (along with my Crusader as well...).

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b76/angelofrage/IMG_20110917_084255.jpg

Had some fun with the cannon. Being able to put things into difficult terrain gives you more options. One game, I managed to avoid a charge from a terminator squad (with chainfists) by hitting them and forcing them to take difficult terrain rolls, preventing them from reaching me. In another game, I hit a 5 man squad of bikers with the tremor shot. Killed one directly. Next turn my opponent moved them and rolled 1s on 3 out of the 4 dangerous tests, losing them. Very unlucky, but it can really help control movement, which is a nice tool to have.

I included a siege shield as the very first game I tried my new toy, on the very first turn, infact the first dice roll of the game. I rolled a 1 on a difficult terrain test and immobilised myself ;) Oh the irony.

Been a long time since I posted an update. What with the dark evenings and cold weather I don't seem to have had the same motivation to paint as much and my new Eldar army has taken what motivation I had. However I'm still gaming with my SM/BA force.

Last night I built a list only out of the stuff that I have painted and unsurprisingly it was a total failure, however there was some pride in fielding a painted force. Hoping that gives me more motivation to get more units finished.

Anyway photo time:

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b76/angelofrage/IMG_20111201_181620.jpg

Using the BA codex we have, starting at the left back:

Dreadnought (Plasma Cannon)

Furioso Dread (Blood Talons, melta gun and heavy flamer)

Land Raider Crusaider (extra armour, multi melta)

Assault squad (5, no jump packs)

Honour guard (4x plasma guns, jump packs)

Sanguinary Guard (1x infernus pistol)

Sanguinary priest (jump pack)

Dante

Terminator Assault squad (TH/SS)

Librarian (TDA, SS, Unleash rage, shield of sanguinius)

That and a (unpainted) razorback with TL heavy bolter rounded me out to 1750.

Was playing against a CSM Deathguard list, including a proteus, contemptor and blight drone backed up by plaguemarines, warptime/wings DP and nurgle terminators.

I lost pretty badly. The scouting, reserve messing, immune to melta proteus took out my own land raider on the first turn, followed by my furioso in the 2nd. My Sanguinary guard positioned to charge a big terminator squad, but from their shooting and the plasma shots from the honour guard the terminators lost 3 (out of 9), failed moral test and ran out of charge range, only to rally and help the rest of his army shoot the, now stuck in the open, sanguinary guard squad to pieces :eek My terminators, sans transport, wiped out the plague marine squad that came out of the proteus (failing to dent the tank itself in the multi charge), before getting whittled down and then finished off by the DP in combat.

your army is very well put together. I had the same idea prior to seeing this thread about the Contemptor dread, and ashmantle claw arms. I also would like to point out for you since I mainly play BA, but have a full 2000+ list in "vanilla" SM's that your Honor Guard with Plasma would be better equipped with Meltaguns. Since they are standard with 2 attacks with the desent of angels they drop in and can pop tanks and should they be around to jump into an assault thats 3 hits each. with the points decrease to could add a PW or two to drop armored infantry. Hope that helps in your next purchase.

P.S you might wanna magnitize the terminator arms to swap out for LC now and again for the high iniative, and PW attacks.
