WIP log Pre Heresy/Heresy Era Iron Warriors! ...On a budget.

Recommended Posts

Well here goes nothing! Hopefully this will be a little log on the continuing development of a Pre Heresy/Heresy Era Iron Warriors force, and hopefully it gives me the motivation to see the project to its conclusion. I am, as seen above, a student and therefore you may (read definitely) notice some cost-cutting measures and army building decisions shaped around what I can/cannot afford. The guys in this post were made from my own collection of bits, a £10 bitzbox.co.uk order and some shoulder pads lovingly donated by the lovely girlfriend :D

Anyway with all that out of the way, I'll give you some pictures: here's squad 1 of Breaching Force Skargeth, I've completed 5 guys so far as a sort of proof of concept:

Here's my favourite shot I took whilst photographing:

And here are three more WIP guys, I especially like the beaky guy:

Also, I promise I touched up all those scruffy bits! Next on the list to get is another tactical squad and some Boring Machines from Ramshackle Games: I thought these would be great for an Iron Warriors siege breaking force.

some one once said... "i die a little on the inside, ever time i see gun barrels left, without paint or drilled out"

or something like that...

I really like your models and your use of simple bit to raise the over all impression of your marines.

(and i think does are "silver skull" shoulder pads...) but i'm not sure.

what are those pads?

They are indeed Silver Skulls pads from GW (Cookie for Fatisworn!) - their heraldry is very similar to Pre-Heresy Iron Warrior heraldry, plus I suck at freehanding ;)

I knew, just knew that would come up! I don't actually have anything with which to drill them (shame on me) so I'll have to ask a friend who I think has a pin vice. Truly, the pinnacle of hobby excellence eh? ;)

  • 1 month later...

Well after more than a month I finally have some progress to show! I now have finished assembling the second fireteam of the first squad, if anyone has any tips on how to improve them before I paint them that would be lovely

http://oi52.tinypic.com/2le2wyr.jpg

Also, you remember that Boring Machine that I was talking about a month ago? It came! It is truly a heavy chunk of resin, I'm sorry I don't have any WIP pics of it but the day I got it through the post I just had to paint it up! you'll notice that the ground the thing is popping up from isn't painted yet nor are the bases of any Marines, I'm a little stuck as to exactly what sort of thing the army should be attacking; I know the army are siege breakers but I'm torn between fortress themed bases and trench themed bases, what are your thoughts?

Also, I recently messed about with a bit of InstantMold because frankly £5.10 extra per marine squad for shoulder pads was ridiculous, here is a very blurry picture of the result.

As always C&C is welcome and probably needed! I have recently purchased a Battleforce from Maelstrom so the next update definitely won't be as long coming as the last :P

Peace and Love, Antares.

Update number three!

try painting a black dot.

that's a really, really good idea! I'll implement it into the guys I've painted when I've got the painting gear out again.

Meanwhile in Iron Warriors land, I think I've made a captain! I will be greenstuffing the rest of the Ork's head before I paint him, but I think this (albeit simple) conversion has been the best looking marine I've made so far :cuss

I've also made up another 5 man tactical squad, pics below.

I can't remember why I took pictures of those two individually, but here's the rest of the sub-squad (is that a term?)

Finally, here are two of the newly cast Iron Warriors symbols sitting proudly atop the shoulder pads of two stalwart siegebreakers

So what do you guys think? C&C is as always very welcome indeed

Peace and Love!

Update number 4! I'm sorry for the gaps between progress reports, but there should be pics of a fully painted and based Squad 1 & an assembled Squad 2, as well as an assembled assault squad. I'd have taken the pictures now but I'm still recovering from a party and the lights that need to be on to take these pictures are still quite painful ;)

I have however been working on a Dreadnought Mark IV with a rotary cannon, converted from an Assault on Black Reach Dreadnought quite well I reckon!

This pictures shows off the work I did plasticarding the side of the cannon arm and converting up the sarcophagus.

Anyway, tell me what you think please, I've got pictures coming of everything I mentioned above!

Wow, very nice dreadnought there, the rotary cannon (it's a Punisher cannon, right?) suits it nicely. What's the cylinder at the bottom of the sarcophagus supposed to be, btw? (I'm curious of it, not critical.) I think it'll be needing some more detail unless it's going to be covered up, I reckon. Anyway, good job. :tu:

The White thing? that's a little bit of plasticard rod! The other thing I think is a viewport from a Leman Russ or something, the thing looked pretty bare with just the rod. As for rod decoration, I'm not sure how to proceed with it, I was thinking of whacking a bunch of smaller plasticard rods around it and making it look like some exposed piping.

I promised pictures of the assembled squads and the fully painted Squad One, and I've done half! The pictures of the finished guys ended up really blurry, I will take pictures, but I'm not entirely sure where I put my camera :D

Completed Squad Two:

The Assault Squad featuring Maxmini jump packs, which I would heartily recommend to any Pre-Heresy collector.

And finally the Assault Sergeant, I know the head may look a bit out of place, but I wanted him to have sideburns!

As always if you're looking at this thread please give feedback, even if it's just a poke towards the painting table; if you're not looking at this thread and you're reading this, I think you're wasting your powers.

That dreadnought sarcophagus conversion looks awfully familiar :tu:

Nice work so far, I know the pain of budget limitation. Pre Heresy enthusiasts might dismiss some minis because of armor and helmet designs, but a hearty "whatever" to them.

I'm interested in how you found working with InstantMold? I recently saw a video and it look quite easy to use, so I'm trying to hear some first-hand experience.

Cheers,

Peter

thanks a lot for the comments guys, I really appreciate them :D

@ Cathar the great: I'll be honest, I think I did my best with what money I had/have and my gaming buddies can't tell the difference, so that's what matters really :(

Instant Mold is pretty good: it takes some patience and learning to use the material, but being able to just melt the mold down over and over again makes it simple enough to learn. Entire shoulder pads are a problem though, and I still haven't mastered the two-part molds yet. Also I believe things like Oyumaru are the exact same but with colours, so that might be a better option.

Hope I helped, side shots and mold line scraping inbound soon, I promise!

Indeed, maximum thanks to Cathar, without whom there would be no Dreadnaught

Did somebody say Update 6?

Well I painted most of the dreadnaught! There is as always little bits that need doing before he'll be properly finished but I was personally quite proud of it and I wanted to share.

The much delayed side shots are here too!

And having (nearly) finished one Dreadnaught, a friend gave me this little monstrosity from when he used to play warhammer, it's a good job I like dreadnaughts :)

Anyway thanks again for looking at my stuff, I really appreciate it!

Thank you all for the lovely comments, I really really appreciate them :Elite:

Update 7!

Wow there's a lot of pictures in here now! Well update on the dreadnought (looked up the spelling!) is less of an update and more of a dunk in amniotic fluid dettol to strip him, and he's joined in there by a Terminator, which will be the next thing I will be working on :P

http://oi55.tinypic.com/2zz22bk.jpg

Also here are some bits I ordered, I've got some really cool ideas for this next guy. Basically I plan to take all of the detail off of the outer torso either side of the sarcophagus and putting studs (a la my Mk.5 Armour conversions) on it in a 2-1-2-1-2 pattern; I'll paint the chevrons on the shin guards this time, and I wanted to do something interesting with the pose of the CC arm, does anyone have any ideas?

http://i52.tinypic.com/a5bwjl.jpg

And finally a little vanity shot showing off one of the now completely drilled barrels!

http://i54.tinypic.com/259bvjo.jpg

Admittedly this isn't a massive update but advice would be appreciated on the dread, as well as some hi-5s from the "drill your barrels" crowd :HS:

edit: work pictures, work!
