Titan87
Hey everyone, I was reading the DIY guide to kill time and stumbled across this line Since interfering with the Astartes always causes a diplomatic stir, the wise Inquisitor will simply tip off another Chapter about the problem, allowing the Astartes to resolve their problems in-house without showing the hand of the Inquisition at work and without any diplomatic baggage. This got me thinking that a relationship between an inquisitor and DIY chapter could have an interesting dynamic, similar almost to the emperor/space wolves dynamic (Not taking their gene-seed relax :) ) with the burning of prospero. Where the inquisitor sets a target and the chapter destroys it. I was wondering what everyone else thought? I think it is interesting, but may be stepping on some of the chamber militant duties as well as some chapter independence issues. Ferrata
I would suggest you read The Scion of Dorn, Aurelius Rex's actually chapter and not this Dornian Heresy malarkey he's playing with :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/227162-inqusitorial-dirty-work/#findComment-2721180 Share on other sites
Grand Master Tyrak
I was reading the DIY guide to kill time and stumbled across this line Since interfering with the Astartes always causes a diplomatic stir, the wise Inquisitor will simply tip off another Chapter about the problem, allowing the Astartes to resolve their problems in-house without showing the hand of the Inquisition at work and without any diplomatic baggage. This got me thinking that a relationship between an inquisitor and DIY chapter could have an interesting dynamic, similar almost to the emperor/space wolves dynamic (Not taking their gene-seed relax ) with the burning of prospero. Where the inquisitor sets a target and the chapter destroys it. I was wondering what everyone else thought? I think it is interesting, but may be stepping on some of the chamber militant duties as well as some chapter independence issues. I'm not sure about how it would work in a wider context, but when I thought that up it was just a throwaway idea about how an Inquisitor could play the various Chapters against each other by manipulating their fear of losing their independence, that's all. Guilliman's reforms gave the Astartes the power to police themselves anyway (which is where you get the conflict over Inquisitorial jurisdiction from), and if it's all resolved in-house then there won't be anyone yelling about Astartes independence. I really just envisaged an Inquisitor saying to a Chapter Master "Y'know, Inquisitor X found out the other day that some of the Librarians in Chapter Y have been summoning daemonhosts and passing them off as the spirits of saints. Wouldn't it be terrible if word got out - you'd have people trying to restrict your independence even more or trying to bring you into the Departmento Munitorum. Still, I'd best be off now". Mysteriously, Chapter Y's Librarians are caught in the act by that Chapter Master whilst on a sudden 'diplomatic visit' and have been dealt with before Inquisitor X comes back. It's much closer to an Inquisitor's modus operandi than a Space Marine Chapter's, but I suppose you could do a Chapter that dedicates itself to policing the Space Marines. You don't necessarily have make them pro-Inquisition either - they could take the attitude that they've got this covered and try to oppose Inquisitorial jurisdiction. I'd be particularly interested to see how you would set up their relationships with other Chapters - I imagine some Chapters would be as unhappy to see you poking your nose in as they would an Inquisitor. Still, I hope this helps. It's good to see that some people actually read the DIY Guide before posting. ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/227162-inqusitorial-dirty-work/#findComment-2721289 Share on other sites
Ecritter
Must always be careful in cases like this that the Inquisitor does not interfere with the normal operations of a Chapter. Once in a while telling of a chapter gone wrong is fine, but if it comes too often it won't work. Leonaides
in my opinion, this is one of those thing that might crop up every few thousand years, but nowhere near often enough to justify it being a diy chapter speciality... Shinzaren
The other issue is that in general, Space Marine chapters are fairly good about not being evil. Though there are always bad eggs and we are shown a lot of examples of Chapters going renegade, it is important to note that these events have happened over 10,000 years. The idea of a chapter that exists only to work with the Inquisition and hunt other chapters doesn't make a whole lot of sense, because Astartes don't go rogue that often. Now, if the issue is not with them hunting other chapters, but any targets designated by the Inquisition, a whole new mess of problems crop up. Because the Astartes and the Inquisition are separate entities, having the Inquisition basically control a chapter defies a lot of the boundaries that are already set up. Astartes generally go where they want and fight who they want (within reason), and don't rely on the Inquisition telling them what to do. Similarly the Inquisition has its own methods of solving problems they confront, without relying on commanding an Astartes Chapter. Each of these two separate branches is capable of handling their own business for the most part. Arkangilos
With what is being said though, there are chapters who have great relations with the Inquisition, and many will do whatever they say simply because they are "allies." I know there are some examples out there. So your chapter could function like a normal chapter, but when the Inquisition comes up and says, "Chapter X is in a bad can of worms and are breaking their ties..." Your chapter would reply. "I see. Brother Anton, bring me my bolter! We go to bring retribution." And now that chapter "deals" with Chapter X. So it is more politics than orders. Also, the Renegades usually don't hang on around, but run into Eye of Terror. Making the 'hunt' sort of difficult and dangerous. Because the Astartes and the Inquisition are separate entities, having the Inquisition basically control a chapter defies a lot of the boundaries that are already set up. The Exorcists, by their very origins and nature, and Red Hunters, they have =I= symbol as their Chapter badge.
