Grey Mage
It should note, he probly wont go SWs. Most of my best friends in the hobby, over the years, have played black templars or undivided chaos. As such Im something of a fan of both those armies, and enjoy talking about them- but Id never play them myself. Grimtooth
So looking on the B&C homepage, the SW forum has about 40000 more posts, and 2000 more topics than any other imperial Space Marine Sub-forum. (That the right number of 0s?) The Dark Angels, Black Templars and UltraMarine forums are quite slow, we're by no means at all dead, but we seem to be slower than you Space Pups (in my own, very small, opinion). The BA still have quite a lot of people, more than the rest, but aren't as big as here. Now, the SW codex was released how long ago? And the Space Wolves are still Humming along happily. Why've the Space Wolves retained such popularity? :) If yiu have to ask, then you wouldn't understand even if we told you. Hahahahahahaha! If you don't immediately look at the wolf fluff and go "oh thats why," all the explaining in the world won't get the point across. I can't even articulate why I love the wolves so much; its just the entirety of it holds an attraction for me more that any other chapter. Forté
Forgot to mention the Lone Wolf. Not because they are hard cases but because its the last member of a pack. Going out for one last time to gain honour for his pack and dieing in the process (to then rejoin his pack at the great feasting hall). Just did it for me. What other army contains units which have so much character. Long Fangs betting with each other in the heat of battle about things like whether that Blood Claw pack will survive against the huge ork grant they just charged. Gray hunters not giving up their Blood Claw weaponry and still liking to get up close. Scouts being those who enjoy their hunt a bit quieter. It just goes on. WolfLord Digby
Its rather simple really in my opinion....Wolves always have, and certainly always will be the largest percent of awesome games workshop have ever created. and you just gotta love space marines that drink copious amounts of alcohol, its a win win combination. Zincite
Hmm, keep this up and I may actually have to start Space Wolves. :Strange: But, in more seriousness, I find it interesting that the main answer is because the SW Player's attitude matches the Space Wolves themselves (Or vice-versa). Indeed, the amount of jokes in here would seem to warrant an immediate 'SHUDD UP!!!' from the moderators anywhere else. Only the other day I noticed how the people in the DA forum are generally well-spoken, and tend to debate things at length*, Though we are stubborn to the point of stupidity when asked to change our opinions. (Though I haven't really paid much attention to anywhere else apart from the occasional excursion to the Black Templars place) Interesting, very interesting indeed. ;) *Does not include Topics concerning Poetry or Plasma guns. Vassakov
There's definately an indefinable something about the Son's of Russ. I think the end point is, either you get it or you don't - if you have to stop and consider what makes a Wolf player tick... sorry, but you aren't one. To paraphrase an explanation I gave to a friend: They're superhuman, power armoured soldiers. And Werewolves. Also, they're Vikings. And they are more awesome than even that sounds. But really, think about some of the great moments of 40K Lore: The Sacking of Prospero, Armageddon 1, the 13th Black Crusade... The Son's of Russ are part of the beating heart of 40K. Don't ever let anyone say different. maverik_girl
I think the real question now is, what separates a TRUE space wolf player from the... codex creep+bandwagon+power gamer+counts-as, space wolf players!? I think people who abuse the codex are the major reasons why the name "Space Wolf" is viewed as cheesy or over-powered. At times that abuse, even ruins the fun of the game itself for those who are actually a TRUE and loyal fan. It's people who abuse the codex, ruin the name and give honest Space Wolf players a bad reputation. So how can one distinguish a real player? that's my question! I was told by my husband (Mav) jokingly, that there was once a time, when you could easily tell a real Space Wolf player. Even if he was a complete stranger. Back in the good old days, I was told that some players wore a wolf tooth necklace, and you could also tell from the minis they had. If they had 2nd Edition Space Wolf models, then you knew. I'm told, that only then your opponent couldn't really complain as much once they realize the SW player is an old school SW player.. a REAL SW player and not a fake one. But it seems like since more people have been jumping in, it's almost like an instant prejudice towards the SWs. I remember Mav being one of the only handful of SW players in our city, and now.. well, the wolf population at our local GW store has exploded, enough that good players, even long-time players don't play anymore. It's like a bitter after-taste. It's sad! we should have like a secret hand shake LOL Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/227208-why-are-space-wolves-so-popular/page/2/#findComment-2722680 Share on other sites
Rayray
At our game store you can pretty much tell which players are authentic wolf players by the comradre we show each other. And as far as old models..... My wolves utilize every model i can image having a beard and wolf talismans on, not just the old ones. I think it has more to do with attitude and less to do with tenure. Just to boot I started playing wolves 6 months before the new book dropped. the jeske
2ed a dex that went beyond being OP [20 cyclons +20 AC ]. 3ed rhino rush . meq army with extra power fists/weapons , more then 1A on each dude . good 3.5 updated with the sm dex. no longer as good as in 3ed . but because of the updated options and the number of upgrades very viable . 4th. still ok . very good mixed force . ok slogger list . ok deep strike army 5th great codex with great option SW never had a bad moment to be played in the history of w40k . they were never forced to play "that one working list only". they always had more working units that can fit in to a normal sized army . The fluff is ok , but lets face it other meq have nice fluff too . Only unlike SW they offten got the shorter straw when given dex [DA made viable by a FAQ almost 2 years after the dex came out and only with one sub build etc]. MaveriK
@Rayray, in the words of a wise man, "If you have to ask, then you wouldn't understand even if we told you." - Brother Ramses. Rank is not something you wear, nor is it judged by the lenght of time you've played wolves (because honestly a new user can just come up and say, yeah i've been playing SW since early rouge trader. But nobody here really knows me but since I'm an old school player my rank is this or that) In truth, rank within the halls of the Fang here at B&C is something you EARN. commander alexander
To be honest, I started out as a DA player five years ago, because there where too many of the other chapters, including wolves. I wanted to be unique, so I did the dress wearers because no one else did them. I quickly realized it was so overshadowed by the codi of the new edition, so I to floated over to vanilla, and then ended up over here, where within one codex, my army and myself can be what the bloody hell I want! Enjoyed it ever since  Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/227208-why-are-space-wolves-so-popular/page/2/#findComment-2722898 Share on other sites
