Why are Space Wolves so popular?

Whilst I am cool about you saying the good things about the Wolves, I think in an effort to praise your pack-mates, you have actually besmirched The Eternal Crusader and the other forums too.

I cannot agree with what you have said, and I don't think you'd get much traction if you went and posted the "Every man for themselves." in those other forums, rather than in the safety of the Fang, surrounded by other Wolves.

Oh, it's not meant to be a Smackdown per se, Willy. I mean, when I've visited the other subforums, there generally seems to be a bit of unease. I play BA (Counts-As, anyways), so I'm not necessarily on the outside looking in, but when I go there, each poster seems to be... I don't know... "There". Having followed the B&C since 04, and lurking far longer than that, I've never seen in any subforum the camaraderie that I do here in the Fang.

For instance, I see Grey Mage (for example) as a brother-Wolf. I've watched as he's grown and developed here, as I'm sure he might have seen me do the same. He was the responsible, reasonable, fairly respectable one. I, m'self, have more than my fair share of Warnings under my belt (and a few temporary Bans), but generally I'm known for over-the-top boisterousness, pride in everything Wolfy and absolutely no restraint in boasting just how much better the Wolves are than any other army out there. In our own ways, here in the Fang we write our own Sagas. GM is the responsible but nonetheless boisterous and fun-loving one, I'm the feral :) hole and God of Luck, Maverik is the artsy visionary, Jonas Stormclaw is the quiet guy in the back you don't want to screw with, Beef is the old fang who pops in from time to time, Brother Rameses is something akin to another version of me... I could go on and on and on. We all know each other by name, by personality, by army, by the times and laughs we've shared and the times that we've had to suffer through. We cease being "posters" on the board and become personalities, real people, not just anonymous internet posters.

Here in the Fang, we not only share an army, we share personal development, we create our own Sagas, we are not just posters on a board but a group so devoted to our hobby and our choice of armies that we effectively become a non-militant Space Wolves Chapter all our own, tightly knit through our brotherhood.

All hats off to Decoy. You hit the nail on the head. Everyone is individual here, yet a pack member.

To be honest, I think if we could do, we should do a meet of the Fang one day. It would be interesting. Its just unfortunate a few of us are very distant from each other :)

Just realised! Two main words spring to mind....

ANTI HEROES

Who doesn't love em.

Why would someone want to be Superman (most Astartes), playing by the rules all the time. When you can be Batman. Kicking ass and breaking rules but still getting the job done!

.... And thus, every Space Wolf bursts into tears at Decoy's heart-warming comment. Or hit each other over the head. Whatever you psychotic puppies do. *Shrug*

EDIT: Never mind, if anyone read what was below. I found it. *Sighs* Made a fool of myself again. At this rate I'll be the Rock's resident clown.

And now I'm just curious. What was that particular bit of Editting covering up? :D

Only the admins know.

Wolves were just compared to a rich boy in a pointed ear'd costume......LMAO......stop sooling yourself. The bat doesn't even have facial hair. Wolves are better at being anti-heroes.......

I would say that I see "Vanilla Marines" as anti-heroes if anything, with their moral standard stuck not so much at protecting humanity as killing its foes, while Space Wolves are true heroes fighting for the right thing.

:'D

it dawned on me that reading this topic that something odd has been instilled in me. Ranks were brought up, and generally in places like these, people demand respect because their pride hates the idea of being called a pup, but not here.

I'm proud to be called a claw or a pup, it doesn't even phase me to take some lumps in a bar brawl since it just means that I'm part of the fang.

I bought my wolves before I had any idea of how to play 40k. Our dex could have been :cusse, thankfully it's far from it, but all I cared about was their fluff and their space viking awesomeness. Over 2 years I never even got to play them, I lost my job and I couldn't afford the rule book s, but I could paint and model and love my wolves!

Being a wolf goes beyond the dice, it's a part of us.

I remember the Black Templar section used to be some what like this. Maybe it's why I like it here.... But alas the Templar section changed... or I'm getting old, or both.

On the other hand, and this is more to the OP question, I have to say I feel live in Fenris. It is a hellish cold here that diminishes only for a few months of extreme warmth. And to a smaller degree when you live in an area that can be that cold, there is bit of something that comes from sharing that hardship...

Anyway, the Wolves represent something I very much like on one hand, but despise on the other. I find myself often defending the chapter as not being drunkards, fumbling in the dark, afraid of technology, and education alike. But still, some see it no other way.

The uniqueness of the Wolves, their feral manner, and their ability to smite most others is good enough for most, but toss in the unique 'brotherhood' and comradery and even the humour the wolves share (is that really present in any other chapter?), and it's a winning combo.

Still there are some that play the Wolves purely because they are capable, and that's going to happen I suppose, but for me it's the whole experience. I do miss 'the old' Templars, but I've enjoyed being here a lot too. There are probably more similarities than most (from either side!) would want to admit. :)

I've just receive an awesome article of pure Space Wolves hate submitted to the blog.

It's surprisingly well written and quite funny.

I've asked him to tweak a couple of bits, but it should go up shortly.

I actually feel quite sorry for the guy. He does play Orks...

This thread can end now. Have an ale brother.

While we did have a bit of a popularity surge immediately following the release of the new codex, the Space Wolves have always enjoyed being a very busy part of the B&C (even when our codex wasn't so popular).

I really believe it has to do with not only the nature of the Space Wolves themselves, but the type of players that our Chapter attracts.

Yes we do currently have a great codex, but more importantly here at the B&C we have a great community. I'm not trying to take anything away from the other Chapters, but we do tend to be a social bunch, and love to tell of our Sagas, try and find ways to improve our Great Companies, and improve our tactics.

That said, welcome to the Fang, grab a seat and an ale, and enjoy our tales of heroism.

Littlbitz hit the nail on the head. We wolves are a very social bunch, whether it's sharing a saga, sharing an ale, or sharing a brawl :D.

Because of that, even the other chapters regularly visit The Fang, whether to test their martial prowess, or for a battle of words ;), which also adds to the number of threads and post count.

Hell, look at the latest "brawl" thread. 20 pages of nothing more then the brothers sharing an ale and beating each other over the head :cuss

Do tell, dear Prot.

Used to be like this? Old Templars?

Wolves similar to Knights? They live in hope :(

:D

So, Herr Wilhelm, any particular reason you like chucking tree trunks around? :D

I can't wait to see that article, Darkseer, it should be an enjoyable read.

The Storm Wardens are have a promo, so I thought I'd be neighbourly and give it a whirl ;)

They also have this sonic weapon called a pipe bag, and boy does it lay waste to all and sundry. Oddly enough, the greener the operator, the more powerful the effect :P

And then we are off to hunt a Haggis in the afternoon. I hear even the Wulfen shy away from them....
