deity12
Ok, so I've been looking into starting a second army and my sights are set on grey knights. I'm a player with I'd say medium experience and ability and my previuos army was a balanced Ultramarine force(sooo uninventive). Now, thing is that I'm rather poor at the moment and will be for quite a while so I'm selling off my Ultramarines so I can afford my new army. :) Now, I'm not being drawn in by the OH MY GOD THEY ARE SO UBER!!!! factor. It's the aggresive short-ranged style that I like, plus I just love psykers for fluff and gaming reasons. So, any advice on if I'm making a good choice and what to buy with the money I get from my Ultramarines? Zagman
Honestly, I wouldn't sell of your ultramarines just to pick up another albeit different marine army. I'd opt for slowly picking up one of the other non Power Armor armies out there. Marines tend to fight and die in a similar fashion. Maybe pick up the BA codex and run your own chapter, two marine armies, using mostly the same models, with differing plays style and abilities.? Dilgar
Well you will not be getting alot of GKs by trading/selling some marines, because unfortunately the GK are still quite expensive to collect. Personally, having had metal ones for a number of years the amount of bits & pieces in the new boxes is just pure awesome :) . Other then that, welcome abord black ship to Titan! number6
I wouldn't sell your current army unless you actually don't like them. There's no escaping that this is an expensive hobby to play, and if you've already got a force you can play, I say keep it! Another reason not to sell: You can use it to proxy GK units in test games, allowing you to "try before you buy", which every gamer on a budget (and who isn't? ^_^ ) should do. Here's what I do: I buy one model kit per month -- be it a single blister pack or a plastic box kit -- and that's it. That keeps the amount of money flowing out of my wallet to a manageable amount yet after only a few months gives me a large portion of the army I want to ultimately play. It also paces my assembling and painting. At no point do I have an entire army staring at me, begging for attention. Rather, I only ever have a unit or two to work on at a time, which always looks conquerable. Welcome aboard! ^_^ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/227266-new-grey-knights-a-good-second-army/#findComment-2722810 Share on other sites
KnowThyEnemy
yea, the more i assemble, the more the rest of them start to look at me with hate in there eyes ;). so many models, so little time. i'd follow the proxy route first before you decide to jump into the deep end. when you start trying to convince yourself that you need a 6th land raider, your fate is sealed. (i see no point in the regular one, with psycannons and rifleman dreads, so i believe ill stop at 5 :) ) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/227266-new-grey-knights-a-good-second-army/#findComment-2723130 Share on other sites
deity12
Yeah, I was going to do the proxy thing anyway but that is some really good advice. The reason I am going for grey knights is the fact that I do like power armour but I do want a relatively different play style but not tooo different if you know what I mean. I have always like the small, elite forces over hordes. Hordes tend to rush forward and attempt to cope with what the enemy does while the elites have strategy plans in place before a battle and try to bend it round, depending on what the situation demands. Plus the grey knights just have the 'team alpha' feel to them. I don't know, I'll think about it... Freman Bloodglaive
I picked up Coteaz, and suddenly all those guard models sitting in my bits box had a use. It's a non power armour, I just need another 5 Chimeras, and if I feel like it at a latter stage I can add some Purifiers, Paladins, or even "gulp" a Dreadknight. I'm not building a "competitive" army (I'm not sure that there are "hard" lists in the Grey Knight codex) but if I want competitive I have my Space Wolves or my biker Marines. It's a chance to play something different. deity12
Made up my mind. Sorry, I have been ultimately corrupted to the BLOOD GOD!!!!!(cheap ebay armies can do many powerful things). It's an aggresive play style(obviously) and its power armour too. and far to many other reasons to list here. Doghouse
I picked up Coteaz, and suddenly all those guard models sitting in my bits box had a use. This is probably one of the biggest appeals to me as it means that I can make a Coteaz proxy and chuck together an army made up of old guard models and other bits I have lying around. I will be digging out all my old models and putting together different armies for ages with this codex. I think that it is quite an expensive army to make using only GK stuff but they are so many ways of bulking out the army with spare minis. Valerian
Khorne flavoured Chaos can be fun. And it gives us Grey Knights players more Traitor Legionnaires to kill!
