Hi all,

I just thought I'd share this, as I know people have been talking about the Battle of Calth novel for some time. Also, apologies if this has already been posted too.

I'm definitely looking forward to the novel, for the moment called "Know No Fear". :)

It had been mentioned, but this video has not been seen by me before, at the very least.

Thank you for sharing, Ludovic :)

And thank you Beasts of War Channel.

Noooo not another Abnett HH book!

It will be legion/prospero burns all over again! All about darned remembrancers or guard even though its a marine battle. Will probably only be like 2 pages of the Calth battle.

He needs to stick to gaunt and ravenor. He is banned from more marine novels!

I personally think Legion is one of the best books in the series and Prospero Burns deff is. Yes he does tend to write more from normal humans point of view, but that makes sense. Thats something WE can relate to. No one here is a space marine, it is always interesting to see how his characters interact with the astartes and interpret their behavior. I'm glad he doesn't do the normal (for black library at least) thing of having the humans all stupefied and scared of the marines.

Also it is strongly hinted at that this is going to be another two part novel like the battle for prospero with AD-B writing the Word Bearers side, so there will be plenty of (excellent) writing from the marines view. I'm excited to see Abnett give the Ultramarines some flavor besides boring. They really are an interesting chapter, GW just makes the mistake repeatedly of making them "The Best" with no flaws and always able to win. McNeill did a good job with them in the first two Ventris novels before he decided that they had to be boring again because thats what GW and the "fans" wanted from their smurfs. Saying they follow the codex does not mean they have to be boring automatons, they are the pinnacle of human perfection, the best strategists and warriors around, and part of that means being able to adapt to changing situations, doesn't matter what a book says. Use it as a guideline not the end all solution for any problem.

If they really followed the codex that strictly they would have been wiped out ages ago because they would be predictable. Especially if they are facing traitor marines who turned to chaos after the codex was written and therefore have complete knowledge of it.

Bro, many Wolves did love PB, even though more wanted PB to be about the fight [which, I agree, it should have been, because of the title].

You also forget the Horus Rising is still [from my reckoning] the best book of the series. And it is penned by.... Dan Abnett.

Whilst A D-B is competing for best BL writer, Abnett is still at least equal first :Elite:

New Gaunt's Ghosts too \o/

It'll be interesting to see how Know No Fear pans out story wise. (We all know The Smurfs give the WB a good kickin')

It's been the subject of a lot of talk, shall we say.

The thing is, due to the expanding lore and our mandate to illuminate the Age of Darkness for the first time, Calth has become so, so much more than just "The Ultramarines versus the Word Bearers". It's now one of the catalysts for all the things to follow over the course of seven years of galactic civil war. Taking the battle as part of a bigger picture, it's becoming pretty fascinating to be planning what ties into it, what springs from it, and what both factions really expected to get out of it.

Interesting.

It'll be good to see how this all works out and how it crosses paths with other legions and other characters in the series. I take it that all of the writers have at least sat down and said 'this is what we can link from the Battle of Calth to tie this up with this etc etc'. I hope I made some sense considering i'm wasting the last few hours of my nightshift trawling these boards.

I loved Legion. I think it's one of the best examples in the genre of an author showing and not telling things to the reader. It sort of reveals things about the Alpha Legion through not revealing them, forcing us to connect facts together logically like a counter-intelligence agent might. I find that conclusions are much more rewarding when you have to use deductive reasoning to arrive at them.

And the most delectable irony I think is that ultimately, the Alpha Legion, characters in the novel, wind up lying to and potentially fooling the reader.

I don't think it's a massive breach of secrecy to say that, given the discussions I've had with Dan, I don't think you guys have anything to worry about.

Thats nice to hear. I was thinking of not buying this, despite the fact its about the Legion that brought me into 40k, because PB was just so dissapointing.

But I guess we will be getting 3 more books before the Calth one (Don`t you just love the wacky chronology of the HH stories? I know I do. ;)) so I guess I`ll wait and find out what the "big reveal" in The Outcast Dead will be about. Frankly, unless it is revealed Malcador the Sigillite is actually Bruce Dickinson, there is little that would surprise me there.

Makes sense! Hopefully it will also explain why it enabled the Word Bearers to participate at the Siege of Terra and for some reason let the Ultramarines take over seven years to get there. ;)

That one can actually be explained. A large chunk of the Word Bearers including Lorgar stayed in or near the Sol system the whole time. I'm assuming near, cause it would be pretty hard for them to stay in it once they were discovered as traitors. Kor Phaeron was the one who led the assault on Calth. Remember, the Word Bearers were the largest or second largest legion, they had the numbers to split.

As a side note, A D-B, when are you going to tell Dan Abnett to get on this forum and post along with you? I'm sure we wouldn't mind seeing you guys discuss 40k fluff philosophy on here.

Agreed. Love PB. In fact I love all Dan's marine books. I very much look forward to WB/Ultras.

I have a general rule of buying every 40K book Abnett writes, and so far I've never been disappointed. Some people just seem to want bolter-porn.

Prospero Burns was not my favourite Abnett book, but it was still much better than almost all the BL books I've read, apart from Abnett's others, ADB's one (not just saying that because he's reading the thread), a few of McNeil's and Ian Watson's old ones.

Some people just seem to want bolter-porn.

You know, it really says something about Abnett fans that they respond to criticisms of his work by attacking the critics...

And its also important to note that people who dont like PB/Legion like the rest of the HH series. Does that mean everything else in the HH series not written by writer-god Dan Abnett is a bunch of bolter porn? :D

Seriously? Boo-hoo. Apart from the general ridiculousness of construing that as me defending Abnett by attacking his critics, you're going to ignore the word "some" in my comment? As in "others don't fall in this camp"?

And really, everyone who didn't like PB liked all of the rest of HH series? Seems like a much bigger generalisation than anything I've made in this thread.

Boo-hoo.

How mature.

Apart from the general ridiculousness of construing that as me defending Abnett by attacking his critics

Combined with the rest of your post, it cant really mean anything else.

you're going to ignore the word "some" in my comment? As in "others don't fall in this camp"?

As in, "those who liked Legion and PB".

And really, everyone who didn't like PB liked all of the rest of HH series?

It was a general statement that people who dont like PB/Legion are fans of the HH series. You can pick it out for the phrasing, but the question you are evading is still there.
