Thunderwolf WIP

Hi fellows,

I'm making my Thunder wolves pack from bloodcrushers, I'm a rookie in sculting, I'm just finished an ork squig, my first miniature. Now I'm going for something bigger. :D

For this model I'm using 50-50 Milliut + Duro stuff.

Things that I have learned:

The head: the wolves do not have eyes on the sides, and the structure is very different than the bloodcrusher one, so it's not worth to reconstructing the snout, putting ears and hair. With the next one, I'll sculpt the whole head from zero.

I have to sculpt the claws BEFORE mounting the legs, is very difficult for me to make claws with the legs mounted.

I'm making some changes on the mini, but do you have some questiions or advices?

Thanks

Javi

That's the tell-tale sign of a predator and prey. Predators have eyes facing forward, to focus on the prey. The prey, on the other hand, have their eyes to the sides, to help watch for predators. It exists everywhere in nature, from lions to water buffalo, eagles to pigeons, etc.

I hope you won't take offense to some observations, but in regard to your future sculpting attempts, some things to consider.. the ears are currently too close together, but moreso than that, on a more natural note, the ears would be more flattened and tilted back. Also, the snout looks a bit pig-like, and I think it has to do with the lack of a philtrum (that line between the nose and upper lip) and wrinkled flesh on the snout bridge when wolves snarl.

Take this with a grain of salt. The notion of what Thunderwolves look like is subjective and in no way have to look like wolves at all or follow their anatomy (as exemplified by the giant squirrel). As for what you have, one rookie to another, I think you're doing great work and look forward to seeing more.

Yes, the next head will be with face forward eyes, your're right... the bloodcrusher seems like an angry horse ;)

Don't worry, all the comments an advices are welcome ;-) This is the way to learn and improve. I think that the snout has the issue because the shape of the head, I don't like the armour piece over the nose.

I've sculpted the philtrum but it seems tha it needs some extra job. Good point about the ears, I take note.

Thanks a lot for your coments, I'll post pictures with the changes.

Regards

Javi

That's a *bit* of a generalization. It's true of mammals and birds, largely, but I think sharks would like to have a word with you about all predators having forward-facing eyes. And perhaps it's best not to even start on insects.

And, actually, that (and the snout) are what make this Thunderwolf look awfully sharklike to me. Which is cool.

Not to derail the topic, but sharks rely predominantly on their sense of smell and use of electrical pulses in the water. I do understand what you're saying, in that there's always exceptions but yes, I should have said most all predator/prey relationships are structured this way.

If i may make a suggestion as to the face, but only do this if either you intend to make a High Elf army or you have a friend who has a High elf army, you can use the heads for the White Lions chariot as the starting point for your wolf heads. Seeing how good you are with green/gray stuff. With the Lion heads all you need to do is create a bigger snout, and mess with the mane.

The Lion heads are about the same size as the blood crusher heads, I think. This way you really have the basic shape and look as a wolf.

Apart from that AWESOME JOB WITH YOUR THUNDER WOLVES.
