LPC fail punishment - How to paint Ultramarines

Having failed the LPC challenge, I'd like to at least fulfil one part of my oath; providing a tutorial for painting Ultramarines.

Rüstung:

http://img806.imageshack.us/img806/5864/001cw.jpg

Step 1:

Prime the model with watered down Mordian Blue; but make sure it's not too watered down, because then it won't stick

to it. I used Citadel's Basecoat brush.

http://img854.imageshack.us/img854/4500/002ewc.jpg

Step 2:

Same brush as before - paint the recesses with a strongly watered-down 50/50 mixture of Mordian Blue/Chaos Black.

http://img694.imageshack.us/img694/8632/003twhc.jpg

Step 3:

Except for the recesses, everything's painted once more with Mordian Blue. This is the easy way of darklining ;-)

I used a Citadel Detail Brush to complete this step.

http://img821.imageshack.us/img821/5708/004ybrr.jpg

Step 4:

The first highlight's made with a comparatively thick line of Enchanted Blue, painted along the edges of the armour

plates. I used my favourite brush, a Sable Kolinsky Size 0, to avoid greater mistakes.

http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/5262/005cdk.jpg

Step 5:

Using the edgebrushing technique, I applied a fine line of Ice Blue to the outer edges of the armour. Make sure you don't use to much force to paint it, as this will inevitably result in quite fat lines. I used a Da Vinci size 00000 for this step.

Metal Areas:

http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/8667/006rq.jpg

Step 6:

Everything that's supposed to be metal is now basecoated with black, save for the stuff that's supposed to be gold - we'll focus on that later. Brush used: Detail Brush.

http://img815.imageshack.us/img815/5405/007fi.jpg

Step 7:

Apply a 50/50 mixture of Chaos Black/Boltgun metal to every surface you just painted black. Same brush as before.

Step 8:

Paint pure Boltgun Metal to the edges of the metal parts. Used the Sable Kolinsky for this.

Step 9:

Edgebrushing was used to paint a thin line of Mithril Silver on top of the pure Boltgun Metal from the previous step.

Red:

http://img833.imageshack.us/img833/2042/008lj.jpg

Step 10:

The gun's casing, the lenses on the targeter and the purity seals' wax was painted with pure Scab Red.

http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/7138/009qr.jpg

Step 11:

A strongly watered-down wash of 50/50 Scab Red/Chaos Black was painted on top of everything that's going to be red, especially into the gun's recesses.

Schritt 12:

Scab Red was used to correct mistakes from the previous step, so that there's nothing too dark on the surface of the gun.

http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/1453/010cuq.jpg

Step 13:

The edges of the gun were higlighted with Blood Red. I painted a small "c" into the lenses to create the impression of a reflection. The inner part of the "c" was left darker.

http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/5329/011vrz.jpg

Step 14:

Some of the outer edges of the gun casing were highlighted with Blazing Orange. The "c" from the last step was also highlighted, using the Da Vinci 00000.

Step 15:

A very small dot of skull white into the area enclosed by the "c" adds to the impression of the reflection mentioned before.

Terminator Honours:

http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/7630/012vcl.jpg

Step 16:

The Terminator Honours were basecoated with a 50/50 mixture of Scorched Brown/Codex Grey. I used the Sable Kolinsky to avoid greater errors.

http://img863.imageshack.us/img863/351/013pv.jpg

Step 17:

I applied 40/30/30 mix of Chaos Black/Scorched Brown/Codex Grey into the Terminator Honour's recesses - into the inner recesses, to be more precisely, as the darklining from step 2 provides the shadow for the outer parts.

http://img842.imageshack.us/img842/7498/014jxb.jpg

Step 18

Everything save for the recesses was now painted with Codex Grey. Same brush as before.

http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/5930/015wo.jpg

Step 19:

The first highlight applied to the Terminator Honours was done by carefully painting Fortress Grey around the edges; not everywhere, though, because this highlight is supposed to create some more depth. Just have a close look at the pictures.

http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/6236/016wkc.jpg

Step 20:

Second Highlight is a 50/50 mixture of Fortress Grey/Bleached Bone, carefully painted along the edges of the Crux.

http://img846.imageshack.us/img846/930/017va.jpg

Step 21:

The final highlight is made from Khemri Brown, applied to the outer edges of the Crux, just to create some more depth. Sadly, the pictures don't really show it - but it looks great "in person".

Gold:

http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/9545/018aj.jpg

Step 22:

The basecoat for the gold areas was done by painting them with Dark Flesh. I used the Sable Kolinsky for the next 5 steps.

http://img852.imageshack.us/img852/9710/019jc.jpg

Step 23:

The first layer is Shining Gold, painted on top of everything that was basecoated with Dark Flesh before.

http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/707/020ad.jpg

Step 24:

Next layer is Burnished Gold, which was painted on top of almost everything that used to be shining gold - leave some recesses, though, because otherwise it'll look even more unnatural.

http://img831.imageshack.us/img831/5471/021zxx.jpg

Step 25:

Wash the gold areas with Leviathan Purple - no kidding, it really does look great ;-)

http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/8499/022zb.jpg

Step 26:

The first and only highlight consists of a 70/30 mixture Burnished Gold/Mithril Silver. Make sure you don't add to much Silver into the mix, because therwise, there'll hardly be any gold left.

Face:

http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/4039/023sqj.jpg

Step 27:

Paint everything that's supposed to be metal with Chaos Black - we'll begin with that step because it's way harder to correct mistakes with black on brighter surfaces.

Meh. Seems that I have used to many images and won't be able to complete my tutorial - so what am I gonna do now?

Any suggestions?

Yap, helped. Thanks a lot ^^

http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/9297/024lh.jpg

Step 28:

Basecoat the skin with Dark Flesh. I used the Sable Kolinsky again.

http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/8748/025zw.jpg

Step 29:

Painting eyes is hard, eh?

Not really. Just paint a thin Skull White line over the eyes - make sure you don't paint the lid, or else your Marine might look just like Hugo Weaving :-D

For this and the next step, I used the Da Vinci 00000.

http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/718/026my.jpg

Step 30:

Next, apply a small dot of Chaos Black to each of the white lines you painted before. Depending on the position of these dots, the face will have a different look.

http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/7644/027ic.jpg

Step 31:

Carefully use Dark Flesh to correct everything you've messed up before - remember, no white lids or brows. ;-)

http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/6564/028yr.jpg

Step 32:

The next layer consists of a equal mixture of Dark Flesh/Dwarf Flesh. This is the "original" basecoat, so just paint it into the recesses and don't worry, it won't look too bright. The Sable Kolinsky was my brush of choice for this step and most of the next as well.

http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/8158/029ee.jpg

Step 33:

A layer of Dwarf Flesh was painted everywhere, save for the recesses. Usually, I'd apply a wash of that colour into the recesses to soften it a little, but in this case, I wanted his face to look a little more scarred.

http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/1994/030ha.jpg

Step 34:

Next layer's made by painting a 50/50 mixture of Dwarf Flesh/Elf Flesh to the upper edges of the face, e.g. the cheeks, the lids and the eyebrows.

http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/8369/031rgr.jpg

Step 35:

The final step for the face consists of a highlight of pure Elf Flesh painted on the upper edges of the face - thin lines only.

Hair:

http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/8910/033pe.jpg

Step 36:

The basecoat consists of pure Calthan Brown painted on every bit of hair I could find. Same brush as above.

http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/7134/034xh.jpg

Step 37:

Second step consists of an equal mixture of Calthan Brown/Vomit Brown, painted everywhere save for the hairline.

http://img858.imageshack.us/img858/5436/035yy.jpg

Step 38:

Pure Vomit Brown was layered on top of everything that was painted in the last step.

http://img845.imageshack.us/img845/2707/036ku.jpg

Step 39:

An equal mixture of Bleached Bone/Vomit Brown was painted on top of everything from the last step; in this case, thin lines make it look better and more natural.

http://img858.imageshack.us/img858/4325/037ac.jpg

Step 40:

Pure Bleached Bone is the final highlight for this Marine's hair. Thin lines create the impression of healthy hair.

Purity Seal/Skulls:

http://img713.imageshack.us/img713/8453/040lmu.jpg

Step 41:

The basecoat for the skulls and the seals consists of pure Bestial Brown, painted into every recess.

http://img714.imageshack.us/img714/2439/041qy.jpg

Step 42:

The first highlight consists of an equal mix of Bestial Brown/Vomit Brown, painted everywhere save for the recesses.

http://img859.imageshack.us/img859/4258/042s.jpg

Step 43:

Next highlight is pure Vomit Brown, painted on top of every surface. Make sure to leave out the recesses; just take a close look at the picture. Hope this helps ;-)

http://img812.imageshack.us/img812/7048/043t.jpg

Step 44:

An equal mixture of Bleached Bone/Vomit Brown was painted along the edges of the skulls and the seal. Don't paint it too carefully, especially on the seals, because this'll create the impression of aged parchment.

http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/2866/044ju.jpg

Step 45:

Pure Bleached Bone serves as the final highlight for both the skulls and the seals - so don't paint it into the recesses. ^^

http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/6451/045te.jpg

Step 46:

The writing looks incredibly complex, doesn't it? Don't worry, it's not hard to do. Just water down an equal mixture Chaos Black/Scorched Brown, use a very thin brush and paint a combination of tiny dots and lines onto the parchment. make it look like handwriting. Really works quite well. ;-)

Insignia:

http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/2294/046gs.jpg

Step 47:

A basecoat of Fortress Grey is used to sketch the chapter symbol - our beloved inverted Omega! - just correct your mistakes with Mordian Blue; if you have followed this tutorial from the beginning, there shouldn't be any trouble with that.

http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/7449/047vm.jpg

Step 48:

Final step! Just paint the Fortress Grey stuff with Skull White. The writing's been done with the same technique used in step 46, only that this time I used Skull White.

Thus, the tutorial is finished and your Ultramarine should be finished likewise - and hopefully looks good!

Feel free to post your take on it in this thread. ;-)

@ GooseDaMoose:

Actually I keep forgetting it most of the time; but with the awesome technique of Darklining it's no longer necessary, at least to my mind. And on top of that, no Space Marine would care whether the back of his knee is blue or black, so no big deal, I guess :-D

@ chaplainmikey:

Thanks, brother. Great to be a source of inspiration ;-)

If you should indeed repaint them, please post the result somewhere I can see it ^^

@ keith:

Thanks a lot! Don't forget to let us see how it turned out ;-)

@ Generating Random Name:

Thanks a lot :-)

I'm really looking forward to seeing those. Many people were thankful for this tutorial, but so far, I haven't seen anybody's miniatures ^^

The first one is in the Ultramarine forum (And in the WIP section), as a comparison between my old painting and new painting skills, still not finished, but it's a passable ultramarine. Also, I apologise that it does use the same colours as your tut, but I don't have them :) Hope you like them, any critiques would be welcome aswell.

EDIT: And to save you time looking for them, here's a link:
