Forté
After seeing peoples models on here, I'm torn between painting my post-heresy wolves the current blue-grey or the old style grey. I'm working on Bran Redmaws GC. Recommendations on which grey would be great too. Cheers Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/227377-which-grey-to-use/ Share on other sites
mitchell93
I use grey-grey, I think it looks better imo. The recipe I use is: spray base coat black, fortress grey, badab black wash and fortress grey highlights. littlbitz
It really depends on the look you are going for. I had a Gray-gray Space Wolf army years ago, and while I could get a pretty good gritty and realistic look to the force I found it a bit drab and even washed out a bit. I switched back to the Shadow Gray that I currently use, and was really able to make the models "pop" on the table top. I have been told that my models look like they jumped out of a Marvel Comic book page, which for me was the ultimate compliment because that was the look I was going for. Easy way to settle it for your self, do a test model of each, and see which one you like better and can paint an entire army of effectively. Lord Ragnarok
There really is no right or wrong to this. I love both schemes. And there are variations in-between. The key factor is, due to our individuality, I see WL's being able to choose freely in the grey options out there. Whether blue/grey, or grey grey. There is no wrong choice for YOUR Company. DeepDarkSecret
I do have to admit that it's much easier to get the gritty look with the "Grey-Grey" style and the "Blue-Grey" is much more of a clean style, but I think the clean style is a little harder to pull off for some because you really need the colors to be flat and clean. Where as when it comes to gritty, you can have a few brush strokes left in the paint because well it's supposed to look dirty and scratched it. Whenever I figure out a style of weathering my wolves that I like I plan on going back and weathering all of them but till then, they will be "Clean style Grey-Grey" lol. Silverwolf
Dark Greys / Grey-Grey are generally accepted as being the "older" scheme type, more typically seen on 13th Co. or a Great Company that has been around since the days of old. A newer Great Company on the other hand seems to be more inclined towards the Blue-Grey. The Great Company I'm working on next is that of Bran Redmaw. And so I've gone with the following scheme; http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v212/0Silverwolf0/Warhammer%2040k/BranRM_GreyHunter.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v212/0Silverwolf0/Warhammer%2040k/BranRM_BloodClaw.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v212/0Silverwolf0/Warhammer%2040k/BranRM_WolfGuard.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v212/0Silverwolf0/Warhammer%2040k/BranRM_WolfGuardTDA.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v212/0Silverwolf0/Warhammer%2040k/BranRM_HQ.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v212/0Silverwolf0/Warhammer%2040k/BranRM_HQTDA.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v212/0Silverwolf0/Warhammer%2040k/BranRM_RWPriest.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v212/0Silverwolf0/Warhammer%2040k/BranRM_RWPriestTDA.jpg These scheme examples were worked out / set-up using the following tools; B&C: PA Painter B&C: TDA Painter Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/227377-which-grey-to-use/#findComment-2724780 Share on other sites
Growler67
Whatever appeals best to you. I prime with Grey and paint my Wolves with varying shades of Grey. I've never been a fan of the Arctic/Ice/powderpuff Blue. Wolf Lord Hallbjorn
I basecoat with black and use a 50/50 mix of space wolves grey and shadow grey. Just what I prefer. DeepDarkSecret
Hah the third one down is almost exactly the same color scheme I'm going for on my basic troops though I can't tell because it doesn't show metallic on there if the chest and shoulder trim are gold or like a bone, but mine will have gold shoulder trim and bone chests. I think I am going to paint my wolfguard's helmets red too just to make them stand out a little more. Chapter Master Ignis Domus
I tend to do a Chaos Black undercoat, then basecoat Adeptus Battlegrey, followed by a heavy black wash, followed by a not quite drybrush, not quite layer of Fortress Grey to give it a cloudy look. I definitely find this preferable to the 'baby-blue' of the new Wolves, especially when combined with gold stuff and Mechrite Red shoulder pads. Fred Johnson the 3rd jr
Recommendations on which grey would be great too. Cheers ROFLOL. This is all a matter of personal preference. I can recommend what *I* like which is grey, not silly blue-grey, but someone else will say the opposite, because that is what they like. Look at lots of pictures to get an idea for yourself, or like others have said, paint some test models...
