My first Grey Hunter

So I finally figured out that the "macro zoom" feature on my camera is what I need to take in focus pics of my models. So, here's my very first Grey Hunter! This is only the 3rd 40k model that I've ever painted and my first Space Wolf (my friend gave me 3 Black Templars to practice on before this one). I'm happy with the way my darker grey with metallic highlights colours scheme is looking. I'm a computer programmer by profession and don't normally do anything artistic, so 40k modeling is branching out for me. Helpful comments and feedback is welcome!

I looked at some pics of wolves to try and get more realistic looking pelts.

I tried to write "RUSS" on the chest in the same "runic letters" style that is on the models. I still have to practice more on the freehand stuff. The "R" was better but the paint got a bit messed up when I drilled the hole for the magnet which you can see in the hand there. Those are 1/16" diameter magnets, and boy do they have a lot of pull for little guys!

I was really happy with the brass on the backpack, and the tail here is where I experimented with the colour blending for the wolf pelt.

Im willing to bet the face is supposed to be painted, for like Mark of the Wulfen, eh?

Not bad, especially since your new to the hobby. It took me a couple months to get to where your at, and a year before I invested the time to go much further. Your doin good.

Red is one of those tricky colours to get looking really good. Use a few coats of thinned paint, making sure each one is dry. Just helps to have a streak free cover.

The gold could do with a bit of shadow to separate it from the red too. Make it stand out more.

Really good start though on your first wolf. Make sure you keep your first ever painted models though. Nice to be able to look back on them and see how you improve :P

Wow, excellent job. The only two complaints I might have are tiny: the skin color on the head looks a liitle too red and the hair is ridiculous, but that's GW's fault. Excellent work overall, have an ale on me.

Hmm, I see what you mean now. Honestly looking at it in person it doesn't look that red. So I'll say that it is 50% camera and 50% me going overboard on the Ogryn Flesh wash. I was having trouble getting the wash to colour evenly across the higher portions so I ended up putting on more to try and balance it out.

Yeah I hear ya on the red. I had trouble with this guy, but I learned to do what you suggested on my next one: thinner coats are better.

For the shadowing, would you use a wash for that or just try to black line it?

Understood. Lots of people have problems with the camera distorting colors. Its your model, so it's quality just has to satisfy you.

For sure. However, I do agree with you on the skin tone. It ended up being too dark, but it would have taken too much to fix by that point. For me, it's "good enough" for now and I'll take my lessons learned and move on to my others. I've almost got my second one done now.
