Grey Knights in small games

Prototype

Recommended Posts

We are starting to play small games as a sort of make-shift league, but the armies are mostly 1,000 points. Given that GKs are so expensive, I'm having some issues with putting together a solid competitive small army. Mordrak seems fairly good in small games, as do mass Henchmen swarms. Or go totally Deathstar with Paladins.

What do you all think about playing GKs competitively in small games? What would you take? Note that even though I can imagine things like a triple-Dreadknight spam to be awesome in small games, I do not have such resources :/

3 10 man purifier squad + 4 heavy weapons and a rhino, combat squad to make fake purgation squads, sit them on your own objectives. send the 3 5 man CC squads off in rhinos to get the others. comes to about 280 points per squad, then you need 150 for crowe to make them legal and 10 points for whatever the hell you want.

might work, might not but it'd be a fun list to run

I don't know why I'm in a Terminator-happy mood today (me spending the last two days magnetizing mine may have contributed to this), but.....

Draigo

8 Paladins, any kit, squeeze in an Apothecary and Banner

1 Paladin (to fulfill the requirement)

Hereticus Inquisitor with Null Rod

Hide the single Paladin behind your Psychic Power-immune blob. I think the Null Rod prevents you from using Force Weapons/Hammerhand, so you could just detach him at the last minute/attach him to the single Paladin/toss him under the bus once he has done his job :X

Draigo eats all the S8+ shots against the squad. Should be a fascinating army to use ;)

That purifier list does come out at over 1100 points though, I'm not a fan of Coteaz and his henchman, so I've been trying out this 1000 point list in a couple of games and its worked well so far:

Brotherhood Champion

5 purifiers with halberds

Razorback w. PB

280

-------

10 GKSS, 2x PC, Rhino, MC DH

275

-------

5x GKSS 1x PC, MCDH, Razorback with PB

175

------

Psyfleman dread

135

-----

Psyfleman dread

135

------

21 dudes

5 vehicles

15 scoring bodies, with the option to combat squad

2 dreads for long range fire

5 purifiers and one BC to assault things

2 PBA razorbacks for some supporting fire as you advance

1000 points on the nose. Only played 2 games with them so far (2 wins, against vanilla SM and SW), the purifier squad with the champion really shines, I initially had them with 2 psycannons in a rhino, but I found putting them in a razorback with halberds worked better, it takes advantage of the BCs re-rolls when you charge and maximises your high initiative force weapons attacks. In my last game they cut apart 2 10 man grey hunter squads by themselves - hammerhand with the champion, cleansing flame with the purifiers, then 15 I6 re-rolled PW attacks works wonders on PA marines (and whatever you choose to do with the BC). You've got some good long range fire power in the dreads, a 5 man squad to hold objectives at home and 3 vehicles with 15 dudes in to advance on the enemy. I'd like more bodies ideally, but in 1000 points its hard to get that many in without sacrificing long range firepower (GK are expensive, who knew?), and while this list worked really well against marines, I think the guard I'm playing tomorrow have a good chance of chewing them apart...

I would say concentrate on getting yourself a good amount of knights on the field. Two 10 man GKSS squads with 2 psycannons each will serve you will and give you a good troop base. It is important, espically in low point games, not to get to wrapped up in bells and wistles and get you some boots on the ground.

Looks like a really good list for the points =) Kudos.

While I do agree that it is important in small games not to blow points on needless wargear/equipment and get more bodies, I also think that in small games certain units shine a whole lot more - those which average choices cannot seem to kill. Things like Mephiston, multiple (good) MC's, good deathstars (e.g. 10 TH/SS Terminators with Shrike). Vehicles like the LR do not count as good, since the chance of it being destroyed by one lucky shot is still present. Of course, the danger here is that you would become a little....unlikeable if you pulled all this in casual games. For the GKs, I think that a triple-Dreadknight spam (kept simple and cheap) or a Paladin deathstar would be pretty scary. My problem with the GKSS is that pound-for-pound (rather, point-for-point), IMO Grey Hunters are better, and SW's are certainly popular.
