upcoming kill team game

Recommended Posts

Hiya folks. I've got my first ever kill team game on Sunday. I'd love to hear some advice from the Wolves on this. As I've never even seen a game of this being played it would be good to hear some tactics advice - and advice on what to take.

I'd toyed with a dread with stealth ... but it's half my points .....

thanks guys, I believe the rules are you can choose 2 troops, 1 elite and 1 fast attack, so no longfangs unfortunately. This also means very little in the way of heavy weapons - which is a shame considering you can choose relentless as an option.

Turbo is for bikes and skimmers only, so I guess I can't do that.

It's 200 points. 5 GH, one with a melta is about 80 points. WG are also an option I suppose.

Do you think PF are needed - or is it overkill?

Can you choose a rhino for your GH? If so, is it worth it?

I like the termie idea. I don't use them in the normal game, so could be fun to play them.

I guess you would take feel no pain for the assault cannon guy. Preffered enemy or stealth on the other? Any thoughts on that?

Bikes are tempting (just cause I love 'em) but are any bloodclaw units going to be at a disadvantage because they can't have a leader and so will charge anything they see?

Scouts can of course have a ML - which is one way to get a relentless ML into the game - but I don't know if infiltrate / BEL is going to be helpful in this type of game - or even allowable.

I use FNP on the Assault cannon guy just as you said, PE on one as well and I usually have Furious Charge as the third skill. 2+ Goes real far in Killteam so I dont think Stealth is that good actually.

As Long as you can keep the Bikes between 6-12" they are fine and can shoot rather well, their increased speed makes them able to kite (if you know that term) a lot of enemies and then only charge when you need it.

One shot heavy weapons are not that good in Killteam cause the board is supposed to have LOTS of terrain so cover is abound, hence why I use Assault cannon rather than Cyclone on my Termie (Also it looks better.).

And scouts are not very good since you cant use BEL, and in that case its better to go with GH for the same price to get a bolter and better armor. 10 GH with 2x Plasma, PW and MoW could be nice.

Played the game yesterday. Steep learning curve because as mentioned I've never played this type of game before.

I had

5 Grey Hunters, one with plasmgun

3 termies with wolfclaws.

Opponent had

1 broodlord

5 or 6 genestealers

Hive Guard

I won roll and deployed. He then deployed his hive guard - then infiltrated the rest of his kill team.

Lesson 1. Infiltrating virtually your whole killteam is a very nice bonus, making it very hard to get more than 1 round of shooting off.

Started well for me, I shot as much as possible and positioned myself in cover ready for the GS assault, so I would get 1st attack. I killed a few and lost none.

2nd and 3rd round of combat turned it though .... his broodlord was awesome ... killing 2 termies (using his hypnotism to stop one of them attacking him each round ... with bad rolls from me on the ld test) and a number of Grey Hunters. I never managed to land a blow on the broodlord.

I took him down to less than half models 1st, but he made his ld test (broodlord has ld10 !) - I rolled next ... rolled 10 and lost the game

Lesson 2. Luck plays much more of a part in these type of games. Small numbers of models means it averages out less.

Anyway ... it was fun, different and nicely quick. But those pesky genestealers with broodlord are a nasty little combo. With that much cover about you never get a chance to wipe them out with bolter fire.

I'm seriously considering a stealth dread next time ... maybe with a 5 man GH squad as back up. It looks a fun group to play as well - and is something you can see as a group being used together.

I think the problem with a Dread is partly that I dont think it will be that much fun, and also that it will be rather all or nothing. I mean the Dread will either wipe the entire enemy team by itself or crash and burn if the guy has a melta or something.

Wolf Guard or Grey Hunter are probably best, for their insane customisability/awesome allroundness (is that even a word?)

Or a Swiftclaw pack, i think it mentions similiar stuff in their background.

Suddenly I want to play a Scenario of a few Lone Wolves that try to take out a traitor guard commander. (only because i have a lot of guard, too.)

Thanks for replies guys.

With shed loads of cover around all the time, I was hoping that a stealth dread would manage to keep in cover and get a nice 3+ save against those meltas. But I know what you mean about all or nothing.

Another option would be as follows.

5 - 6 grey hunters + some nice addons.

5 scouts. One with a heavy bolter and relentless, maybe one with sniper rifle

Honestly - infiltrate was awesome in these games .....

The problem I can see with biker packs is the amount of cover. It's supposed to be as much as you can fit in. This means movement is usually through cover - and this screws with the bikers ... making them make dangerous ground tests all the time.

You can use dedicated transport - but I'm not sure who could get in it as each model counts as a different unit. Also as with the cover post above ... there's not much room to move around.

I've used a kill team very much like the one you list - just starting with minimal grey hunters and scouts and adding a few upgrades. Grey hunters tend to be pretty amazing in these games, and scouts can provide excellent support with heavy weapons/sniper rifles/surprise attacks. It also makes for a very characterful kill team, which is the most important part for me.

how about a wolf guard biker with skilled rider?
