Torben Kastbjerg
Greetings! For a long time now I've been playing with my Imperial Guard army (with a Rogue Trader theme) and while I like being able to paint whatever mix'n'match colourscheme for them then I've started to get a hankering for painting a real regular army; you know - one with the same colours used for all units, looking like a real fighting force etc. So I started out with the following test scheme: http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j313/Phoenikuz/5th%20Edition/Marines/marines003.jpg Which I liked a whole lot! The earth tone colours suits me just fine! However, my problems began when I actually started painting regular Marines: http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j313/Phoenikuz/5th%20Edition/Marines/marines009.jpg See, this is my initial test (WIP) for a Sternguard veteran. I like it, but I need ideas on what I could do to make them stand out more, and to be more in line with the teachings of the Codex! I've somewhat decided that the left shoulderpad should have a filled in colour which will designate the units type (black for devastator, red for assault etc.) whilst the right kneepad will designate their squad (various colours, thinking two-tone here). But where should the chaptermarking go then? My first instinct was to put it on the right shoulderpad but as you can see, that's where the crux terminatus goes. Any suggestions? Or should i just ignore the chapter marking and let the colours speak for themselves? (perferred option as I haven't really decided on a chapter mark just yet :)) http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j313/Phoenikuz/5th%20Edition/Marines/marines013.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j313/Phoenikuz/5th%20Edition/Marines/marines018.jpg http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j313/Phoenikuz/5th%20Edition/Marines/marines016.jpg What colours would you then suggest for the following: - Helmet Colour for Veterans - Helmet Colour for Sergeants / Captains - Shoulderpad colours for type (Tactical, Assault, Devastator) - Kneepad colours for squads (1st, 2nd, 3rd etc) Cheers, and thanks for looking! Warsmith Aznable
Don't know what to tell you when it comes to advice concerning the Codex Astartes, but I will say that you color scheme is pleasing to the eye. The mold lines on that melta Marine kind of stand out, though. Maybe bumping this will draw some Loyalists in here who can give better advice than heretic old me. Praesul
I would go with chapter markings on the left shoulder, squad markings on the knee/greave, maybe type on the other knee. GhostLegion
first off, looks like youve got some good brush control...keeping these colors crisp and clean like this is not always easy, so kudos there. as far as your chapter badge goes, well hell...why not leave it off the marines themselves and move it to any low level (sgt type) back banners or non-special chapter banner? this would save you some time and effort in painting and add some character to the army without too much effort.... First off, cheers! And I like the idea of letting only lowerlevel commanders have the chapter marks; although I'm not much for the back-banners... Will have to think on this. Don't know what to tell you when it comes to advice concerning the Codex Astartes, but I will say that you color scheme is pleasing to the eye. They're sort of my nemesis; I always seem to miss them when cleaning the miniatures and only discover them at the very end. Incidently, I tried out the colorscheme on a Dreadnought as well: http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j313/Phoenikuz/5th%20Edition/Marines/marines022.jpg I'm considering putting on chapter marks on the left side panel of the torso of the Dreadnought... of course I've yet to find a theme and chapter mark for this particular chapter. The 'theme' so far is a Mechanized army; all units should be in transports. But apart from this then I'm at a bit of a loss. I feel you. I scrape and file and cut and then when I start putting paint on...
