The Scout Apocalypse Comes....

Hi Everyone.

The last few months have been very busy... and I've recently fallen out of favour with the hobby... but to re-inspire and recharge me, I'd like to offer this update to my 100 Scouts Project. (oh yeah, I broke my ankle on Friday, so I have nothing but time to paint, build, etc.)

I had started painting this army, when about 1000 pts in, I decided I didn't like the scheme. I play this army as either Codex: Space Marines or Codex: Blood Angels. Well, to make them look about right, I chose purple as the 'hearaldry' colour. (I telion from UM, Shrike from RG, then the BA red) So, Red + Blue = Purple, with Black. I was toying around calling them 'Baltimore Raven Guard', with Ray Lewis as thier Captain, but the Colts are my NFL team! :P

Anyway, in the BA Codex, the 10th Company is called the Redeemers, which I think is a great name. So I used it for this DIY army. Anyway, on to the pics. I hope you enjoy the show!!:

The unit with the most work: The first of 2 Bolter Squads:

Next is the second Bolter Squad:

Here are 2 Close Combat Squads: one with all Bolt Pistol and Combat Knife, the other with some Shotguns:

This is a unit of Special Forces: Regular Close Combat Scouts with Cloaks deployed and special breathing apparatus (I would imagine these guys to be first on the scene in a hostile planet/environment):

On to the Snipers. 3 Squads. 1 with custom 'counts as' Telion, one regular Sniper Squad, and 1 incomplete squad (7 models)

on to the the vehicles: 2 Land Speeder Storms and Crews. 1 with Heavy Flamer, one with Multi-Melta. Note crews are equipped accordingly. These Sergeants have backpacks containing Teleport Homers.

Bikes: Sergeant (with Combi-Melta) has Locator Beacon on back of his. This is one unit of 10, I just took them in pictures of 5 for some reason....

I have 3 Land Speeders and Crews. Two are pictured above, the third one is not yet built... but this is it's crew. I just added a random Sergeant becuase I haven't decided how to load him out yet:

I have a few extra Sergeants, just in case.... note various load outs.

and finally, the army shots:

Please remember this is an ongoing work... I'll be working on this army in the coming weeks, adding more models, decals, and of course paint! There's lots of work to be done still, but comments, suggestions and questions are more than welcome!!

thanks for looking!!

PS: I count 105 Scout models, 109 if you count the 2 LSS Pilots and Gunners! :)

nice collection cap'n.. youve double the scouts i own, nicely done

Thanks GC!

If it weren't for your ariticles and insight, and some really nice Scout models, my interest in 40K would all have been lost. For some reason, I really enjoy painting these guys. Even though they are limited in pose, weapons, heads, etc there's so much variety when it comes to painting them. Keeps it interesting!

@ Shortsonfire79: I've never been in a cast before. It's annoying as heck... for that sake alone I heal quickly. hopefully my doctor can give me extra time off work though! <_< Stay tuned for more in the near future!

Nice models! Two questions, though:

1. Is the respirator head just a regular marine respirator head with the neck filed down?

2. Where did you get all those rolled up cloaks?

Hello!

1. The respirator heads actually come in the Scout Bike Box. You get 5 different heads in there.

2. I bought all the cloaks from several bit sites on the web.... it was probably the largest cost in this collection! You do get one in each Scout Bike box, 2 in the LSS Box and 1 in the Sniper box...

@ZombyWoof:

1. His legs and torso are from the sniper box. The bolter is just a regular scout bolter. All I did was cut it (bolter arm) at the shoulder, and shaved down the left arm to fit. It was really a simple conversion. The muzzle is just a spare part I found in my various bits. I gluded a regular Space Marine Scope on the top of the bolter. Then I just grabbed a random head and voila! Counts as Telion!

If you go back up and look at the 'Special Forces' scouts, it was pretty much the same for them! (I just used the shotgun arms instead of the bolter)

Aha! I figured it had to be easier than I thought. Thanks for the tip!

  • 3 weeks later...

It's been a few weeks, so I thought I'd post some progress... I was in a tournament, so I speed painted a few units (which I won't show now) but I finally completed a unit!

I need to touch up the faces a bit... I need a little practice with the eyes, but for the most part, they are done.

Here are 2 Sergeants. 1 with my interpretation of a Teleport Homer and Combi-Flamer, the other with just a Combi-Flamer

working on a Land Speeder Storm and it's Crew... should be up soon.

Thanks for tuning in!

I think you're doing fine work, good solid painting across the whole of this force.

If theres something thats letting you down, its the eyes you've painted on, they're kinda big and odd looking.

I think your guys would look a lot better if you just ignored the eyes until maybe you get a smaller brush or get a little better at getting them right.

Please don't take this as me being a dick, just trying to help out. Great work overall though.

Just zoomed in on one of the pictures, it looks like you're painting the whole of the eye socket white, instead of just the raised eyebally-bit.

You could try going back and painting the skin colour onto the eye socket surrounding it to make the eyes look a little less out of proportion.

if you make the pupils meet the top and bottom of the white they will look alot more natural, make them look like a 'slit' rather than a dot..

other than that coming along nicely.

how did the tournament go?, ive got mine tomorrow

rather than giving the eyes a wash, which could be really hit and miss, get your flesh colour and just line-in the outside of the eyes. It's kinda hard to describe what I mean... you need to just paint over the extreme top and bottom of the HUGE white eyes you have at the moment to make them more eye shaped, it'll take a steady hand, but it's much easier than getting the eye perfect in one flash of white.

Yeah, 'll re-iterate the eyes thing. Also, when you correct the size, remember to put the pupil sort of three-quarters covered by the eyelid, otherwise it looks weird.

The scheme works, but man are you crazy. I find that scouts are the marines I dislike painting he most, manly because of the fatigues.

Yeah, it really does tire you out.

Ba-dum-tish.

Wow, scoutpocalypse indeed! How many points is that?!

I count 2360... there's another Land Speeder Storm that I just built that is not pictured.

now about the eyes... I kind of did them in a hurry to try to get them ready for the tournament... now that I have more time, I'll work on making them less "prostate exam" like. :)

thanks for all the comments and advice!!

I learned a great deal about the tournament environment... met some great guys, but I really stunk as a general. My inexperience and lack of tactial knowledge showed. I got tabled 4 of 6 games, and lost the other two by a large margin. I had a feeling it was going to be ugly, so I tried to make the games as fun as I could.

The Scout Army made a lot of people wide eyed (no pun intended) and take notice. Got lots of good feedback on them.

Good luck tomorrow! I know you'll do great!!
