Grimtooth
Hrolf stealthily moved forward on his stomach through the dense underbrush. Despite his hulking form encased in the dark grey ceramite armour of the VI Legion, his passage through the vegetation went unnoticed by even the small avian creatures flitting from branch to branch. Even with the deluge of input received by his enhanced senses from the jungle environment, the scent of his prey was now stronger then ever. Stealth would make the upcoming attack even more devastating. It had been thirty-seven hours since his pack had made their drop on the planet in response to an Imperial distress beacon, thirty-hours since they had found the devastated outpost, and now five seconds remained before the ones responsible for the unprovoked attack would face the judgement of Russ in the name of the Allfather. Keying the secure communication link four times and hearing the keyed response from his packmates in response, Hrolf sprung to his feet and rushed through the remaining vegetation into the tri-moonlit clearing. As if breaching an invisible barrier into another world, the scent they had tracked for a day and a half disappeared along with all the other smells and sounds of the jungle. The pungent odor of incense and coppery tang of freshly spilt blood assailed their oflactory senses instantly. Strewn around the clearing bodies lay cast in pools of spreading blood, each corpse marked with symbols that appeared to have been recently burnt into the flesh. They appeared to be arranged in a barely discernible pattern that caused Hrolf to wince in pain when he cast his gaze upon them. Deep hollow laughter echoed from the shadows surrounding the massacre. Hrolf quickly turned to find the source and an explosion of bale warpfire burst before him, blasting him to the ground and rending him motionless by burning lines of excruciating pain racing through his nervous system. Eerily familiar howls of pain, abruptly cut off in death, echoed around him as his pack brothers met the same fate as him. Before the darkness of unconsciousness took him, Hrolf heard a sinister voice filled with malice speak, "He will do." ************************************ Descent vectors floated across the miniature H.U.D. within Higuer's wolf skull helm as the high pitched whine of his jump pack drowned out the rushing winds buffeting his body. Around him, twelve members of pack Hagalaz also raced to the rapidly approaching ground, their inexperience showing with the erratic braking and application of thrusters. It had been a mere hour since the personal locator beacons of pack Raido had ceased transmitting their coordinates and in that time the planet had erupted in an explosive Chaos cultist uprising. Dirty radiation and crude viral bombs had been detonated in at least a dozen of the major hive cities. Imperial garrisons across the continents had been overrun and their armouries looted. The full strength of the Sepp had or was now falling upon the planet. With so many engagements across the planet, Higuer had been tasked to lead the younger members of the company to investigate the disappearance of the pack. He activated his com link, "On landing, Formation of the Jagged Claw on my point. Keep your spacing or by Russ' Beard I will cuff your daft heads from your shoulders!" Acknowledgement of his orders echoed immediately in his ear bud. As the ground rushed up he expertly applied the counter thrusters of his jump pack, going from flight into the all to familiar lope of members of the Rout. His display showed all twelve members of the pack falling into formation and moving at the same pace towards the objective, three hundred meters away and closing swiftly. Suddenly the sharp ping of an activated beacon rang in his helm, vital signs barely registering that of one of his brethren! He broke into a sprint and unbidden the rest of the pack did as well. As point of the claw, Higuer was first to break through into the clearing and bear witness to the carnage. Littered across the ground were the bodies of Chaos cultists. Higuer's expert eye quickly accessed the wounds and determined that whatever had klled them it had not been done by bolter or chainsword. Eyeballs lay burst from heads, trailing glistening ropes of twisted ocular cords, ears bled grey and bloody liquid of what could only have been brain tissue, and the bodies lied in positons of what could only have been achieved due to planned mutilation. This was all taken in and processed at a glance from eyes trained in combat and the experience of war. However his flint grey eyes locked at the center of the massacre and an oath of aversion from his long in the past tribal life crossed his lips. Pack Raido lay in a crude semi-circle in front of a crudely erected cross made from salvaged plas-steel girders. Each pack mate lay naked of armour with the fleshed flayed from their bones. The ossified rib cage of each lay ripped open, with the internal organs splayed about as if inspected and then casually tossed aside. The pain etched across the face of each prone body told the tale that they had been alive during the ordeal. Higuer turned his gaze to the cross and was met with a haunted gaze of the only member of pack Raido still alive. His crucified body hung from the girders, his forearms and shins pierced by great jagged splinters of the the steel and then secured with concertina wire in great loops. A gasp issued forth from Higuer as his eyes raced across the ruined form of one of his brothers and his Astartes anatomy training recognized two gaping wounds, one at the neck and one at the chest. His gauntleted hands had performed the rite a hundred times over on the field of battle yet here it appeared taloned claws had ripped the the Rout's living legacy from Hrolf's body. Higuer quickly turned to the horror struck members of the pack he led, "Quickly my young brothers, get him down!" He turned suddenly and opened a secure connecton over his comm link and rapidly began to explain his findings to those on the other end. ******************************************** Two Astartes stood in the shadows at the far end of the combat training area. One leaned against an ornately rune-etched spear, a visible aura of wyrd power radiating from the similiarly etched runic armor encasing his form. The other, wolf skull helm now removed and attached to his belt, stood stoicly in his midnight black power armor, Across the chamber, Hrolf stood crouched in a combat stance. Surrounding him were four fully armed close combat servitors, their four mechanical arms each armed with a different type of close combat weapon, poised and ready to strike. Hrolf himself stood naked of power armor and instead fought bare-chested with combat fatigue pants. Across his flesh lay the puckered scars of his ordeal only months in the past. While all the other wounds had long since healed, the two horrendous injuries from where his progenoid glands had been ripped from his body now bled freely, reopening under the strain of mock combat. With a blur of flashing steel and whining chain weapons, the servitors attacked as one! Microprocessors evaluated possible scenarios a thousand times over in the time it takes a breathe to exhale, yet it could not possibly match the raw ferocity of the unarmed Hrolf. One servitor already lay limbless, another flew smashed from its mounting hydraulic pistons, and the thrid shuddered in flying sparks where it stood, a bloody fist embedded in the housing. The last servitor thrust a curved cuirass, unchecked through the bicep of the extended arm. Unchecked by the warrior, but not unplanned. With the blade trapped in his own flesh, Hrolf stepped forward into the arc of the servitors flaining weapons and withing moments it lay devastated on the ground. With hardly a grunt of pain, he reached up and withdrew the blade, casting it to the side. A gruff growling voice from the shadows behind startled the two priests from their observations, "Has he revealed anything yet of the incident?" Recognizing the voice as that of the Jarl of Sepp, Higuer answered, "No. Not a sound when we took him down nor not a sound as we worked to save his life on the slabs of the medicae deck." Again the gruff voice spoke, "Sigvid, have your brethren found him to be tainted?" Sigvid slowly shook his head no, but hesitated a moment before the the Jarl spoke again, "Then let him find his honor. He shall walk the Path of the Lone Wolf until the thirst of vengeance is slacked by the blood of his enemy and he shall be elevated to the ranks of Wolf Guard shall he return ali....." The rune priest interrupted the voice from behind with a shake of his head again and spoke with sadness in his voice, "Not this one jarl. I have cast the bones for Hrolf time and time again and they reveal nothing for him. He has chosen this and it has changed his fate beyond our abilities to foretell his destiny. The ritual performed upon him has removed his gifts of immortality to the Rout, henceforth his vengeance against those responsible will be unending." Silence from the shadows followed by a audible sigh of sorrow. The voice that followed was filled with anger at the loss felt by one of his own, "Send him to the Iron Priests and by my order open the armory to him! Anything he sees fit to wreck his fury upon his foes he shall have by Russ!" Rune_Priest_Rhapsody
Nice writing Brother Ramses!! Are you intending to set fluff for your entire Legion then?? If so, I for one, will look forward to the heroic (or unfortunate) accounts when you do!! Grimtooth
Nice writing Brother Ramses!! Are you intending to set fluff for your entire Legion then?? If so, I for one, will look forward to the heroic (or unfortunate) accounts when you do!! End of Line Thanks, I appreciate the compliment. I am just writing fluff for any and all models that I feel a person looking at my army will be drawn too. Like Hrolf will be on the table, someone will ask about him because me magnetizing his arms or something to reflect having full access to the armory and I will be able to hand him part of my army list with his saga. If you like the fluff, keep an eye on my blog in my signature, specifically the fluff section. I post up the fluff in the SW forum and then when done, they get copied and entered to my blog with some minor editing to finalize the draft.
