Masks of Death

I read this -

They also believe in extreme self control. Whilst among brothers, this is relaxed, but nothing is told to outsiders that the Masks's command has ordered not to be told. This is true even to other astartes chapters. The Masks refuse to be emotionally compromised - righteous anger or even disgust is still emotion and is still rigidly controlled. However, the Masks are also polite and typically do not offend other military forces, despite any lack of control other chapters or Imperial Guard regiments might display.

- and I detested it.

So, I rewrote it.

The Masks of Death believe in extreme self-control. Righteous fury, disgust for the enemy or even pride over personal or even the chapter's honor is considered as emotion and the chapter requires every battle brother to set these aside for the greater good of the Imperium. This is something every Mask is made to know and understand completely when they become a full battle-brother. They are also tested to see if they have truly understand who and what they are to the Imperium, and more importantly, to the Emperor. The veteran sergeants allow the initiates to pass when they hear this answer -

"I am a servant of the Emperor, and the paragon of humanity. My duty is not just to die for Him, but to serve him in every aspect of who I am. My skills in war will always be my first and foremost tools in honoring the Emperor, but I will not allow my other skills to fade so that I am less able to honor Him. Though my honor, my chapter and even my very identity may fail me, and fall away, I will serve the Emperor always, in life, death, and in everything I am and will be"

Though rarely those exact words are given, the veterans of the chapter care more for the attitude behind the initiates words. It is both the acknowledgement and the giving up of the self that marks a worthy canidate - it is the most basic level of the beliefs of the Masks of Death. It is what makes them true not only to their namesake, but to the Emperor and the Imperium.
