Michael's Craft Stores, USA

So wasn't sure if anyone knew this;

I was at Michael's this past weekend doing some wedding decoration shopping with my fiance and in their woodworking section I found a package that contains two wooden barrels. Looks like that would fit pretty well on a terminator base for objective markers. I will try and get an actual photo of them today as I plan on getting a couple for that exact purpose.

Fake plants for making forests and ruined temples, balsa wood in strips and flats for construction of buildings, foam in many shapes that can be carved into even more, cardboard tubes, paint brushes, sandpaper, grit, wood blocks, modeling clay in over a hundred colors, bags of particular kinds of rocks- not useful for me, but more city bound people...- and most of its rather reasonably priced all things considered. They also give you a 10% off coupon whenever you make a purchase- lasts about a week IIRC. So go in, look around, grab something small like a brush or two and then think about it. Come back a few days later when you have your terrain figured out and stock up at a discount.

They also do alot of seasonal items, some of wich can come in handy for terrain or conversions.

And of course its an arts and crafts store, so usually its easy to get most wives/girlfriends to go inside without rolling their eyes at you. By wich I mean it also has beads, sewing materials, colored pencils, pastels, framing stuff, paper, doll parts, etc. Theyre really all inclusive.

Balsawood tends to be in the back in a corner though, as its more of a hobbyist thing. The things like barrels tend to be in the dolls area, though sometimes they have a small area set aside for model train terrain- that stuff is a goldmine.

I go about once a month, I trend to spot something different every time. I once found a cool flyer for techniques to use with foam creations, it was for non warhammer thing but the ideas can still be applied. So don't over look the crafty books section either. Also I buy everything but the minis from michael's: glue, paint, brushes, knives etc.
I actually find it possible to spend just as much at michaels as I would at my lgs, foam board and popsicle sticks with some hot glue can make some great building. Miniwargaming has some great ideas I've used and then blown 40bucks on supplies. Never serb the barrels, but then again I never went near the doll section and I'm extremely interested
They always have sales almost everyday! and I found their prices (Canadian) in general are really good.

Truth.

But seriously, who hasn't had some stupid project as a kid that you had to go to michaels for. I remember building a model fusion reactor as a kid, and iroquois houses with stuff from there 15 years ago.

Any pics of these kegs yet? Are they pre painted? Plastic?

Wooden and just bare. I had some things I had to take care of the past couple of days, but stopping by on the way home to pick some up for a tournament tomorrow.

My wife is an artist, so we find ourselves there fairly often. They do indeed have good deals regularly, and usually you get some kind of coupon on your receipt.

...plus the one in our area is right next to a toys'r'us. Winning.

End of Line

So I have been plopping them on some terminator bases and they are going to look pretty damn good.

1. First one is just going to be straight up. Looks pretty decent just standing there as if ready to tap.

2. Going to set the second on the side. Fits perfect on the base perfect.

3. On the third one, I am going to break out the hobby saw and cut off a little at the bottom to make it canted and buried.

4. Still fiddling with this last barrel.

All bases will be done to make the barrel look as if embedded a little in the dirt. Thinking of doing some pva ale effects, but need to see how it will look on a test base first.

Finally was able to swing by:

Will fit on a terminator base pretty nicely. Ninety-nine cents for two per package.

AH! Perfect man. Those are cool objective markers.

On a side note I'm with Wulfebane, the only time I've been there was my mom dragging me in there to get stuff for her classroom.

Based on how the bindings are curved like rope instead of flat like strips of iron, I would say they're the same. Even if they weren't, it'd be a good buy.

@RunningWolfFenris: I go in there quite often now... >.> Michaels tends to have a lot of canvas sales and discounts.

@Ash Tekka: Brushes, spray paints, xacto blades, sculpey.. they have a small section on miniature terrain (for purposes of like train sets, but w/e!).

And lastly... silicon, latex, and resin mold making kits! Grab an epoxy silicon mold making kit and some sculpey and you can buy one keg for $0.99 and make as many as you want with the mold you press from it! I've been using the silicon molds for reproducing those chaos warrior fur cloaks and SW wolf skulls and accessories out of sculpey and GS.

Anyways, I highly recommend grabbing the silicon and latex stuff from Michaels! It should be in the same aisle as the glue.

With a mother, 2 sisters and a girlfriend (all very crafty...is that right...anyway) I've known of the greatness that is Michael's for quite a while. I get all of my brushes and most of my terrain stuff from there. If you've never been you should definitely check it out, it's not all, for lack of a better term, "chick-stuff".
  • 3 weeks later...

So after seeing this thread I finally got down to Michaels and bought the three packs of barrels they had. Here is the first one all painted up.
