Thinking of starting a Great Company

Greetings to all my brothers (and sisters) of the Fang. I come to you asking for your assistance and knowlage.. I have ale..

I've been sitting on the fence for the last few months now, teetering between the Wolves, and a darker xenos scurge.. but no matter how long i wait, i can hear the howlings calling to me.. But, i do not know where to start from, at all. Now naturally i have the codex, i've read thru it, several times, and i find myself looking to Two different Wolf Lords and thinking.. that manner of warfare sounds like fun. A straight on, head on assault with lots of things that make loud noise, Or the mad laughter as flames engulf the enemy..

Okay, honestly? I dont know where to start, what would make a good basis for an army composition. Im not sure if its more worthwhile to ride into battle propelled by rhino and razor-back, or slogg it there, with a larger presence of wolf brothers. Any one have some thougts, or ideas to make a a good core?

start with the battle force box and i would get razor-back's if you want troop transports beacuse by not gluing down the top part means its a razor-back or a rhino. on top of that the razor-back gives you an extra set of heavy weapons. and in my recent game against my buddies gray knights having those extra shots going down ranger really helped me kick his foot slogging butt. other then that get what every you think you will need maybe a dread or some long fangs i would recommend picking up a space wolf box where there all in power armor as that gives tones of extra bits and you can the wolf out other things

Grey Hunters. For just about any points value, you'll field anywhere from 5-30 of them and more. You can't go wrong getting at least two boxes, even if you just make 10 GHs, because the Space Wolf Pack box has so many excellent accessories that you can make all the HQs and non-TDA elites you'll need, just from kitbashing.

Razorbacks or Rhinos... it won't matter. As postal105 said, the Razorback kit is essentially a Rhino + heavy weapons included in the box, so just get razors and you can easily magnetize the turrets for switching out. As for which is better to use, it's all preference, but nowadays it's standard practice to have atleast one pack in a transport.

Long Fangs. I can't think of a single composition (outside of Wolfwing or Canis armies) that don't take atleast one pack of Long Fangs. Their split fire and ability to have 6 in a pack make them one of the best heavy support units in the game.

Whether you field all transport or all footslogging... or even all drop pods is complete preference and I don't think anyone can truly help you with that. It's all about your own personal playstyle which you'll come to determine mostly by playing a few skirmishes before committing to a full company roster. All anyone can really do is tell you what they prefer and I've yet to see/hear a method that can't be countered by another proclaimed method. I personally mix it up with razors (my preference) and footsloggers. I own one drop pod so far, and haven't painted it, so I am as yet reluctant to field it ..but I think once it is, I will likely use it (and hopefully more) very frequently.

When all else fails, this blog about Space Wolves is extremely helpful in regard to tactics and building what you'll need to make a killer SW company.
