First game of 5th edition....

Hey,

My first game returning to 40k and my first in the new 5th edition.

Against Eldar but the idea is to get one list to play on a regular basis. I used to play about 3-4 years ago and ended up going out and spending money on everything and anything I liked the look of, with no idea of what to use and when.

I'd turn up to my game club with a new list every week and get smashed by everybody!!

So after stumbling across Darkseers blog I was inspired to get back into 40k and the Wolves. I used to run 13th Company but alas as they are no more I upgraded my list and my army to suit the new edition. I have used the Escalation list as my basis to form a 'core" of 1000pts that I can then add to.

I will upload some photo's of my army in a day or so. Some of which I bought on ebay ready painted and some I painted myself.

Wish me luck!!

The full list is here

Ok, so things didn't go aswell as I hoped.

We played Pitched battle, Annihilation. He deployed first with everything in a gun line going from my left to right. Avatar on my left , snipers in the middle, a squad of walkers (3) and some sort of mobile cannon with an attached squad on the far right.

I apologise for the lack of correct names as I've only just got back into it and have alot to learn!

I deployed 2 squads of GH in rhinos on my left, a squad of LF and razorback in the middle, a lone wolf and another 2 squads of GH in rhinos on my right.

(1) He moved the Avatar up my left flank and took some pot shots at my LF to no effect, but snipes the Pack leader.

I advanced everything up trying to keep to cover and took out half the squad on my far right with the 'fangs missiles.

My first mistake was spliting my forces, I should of kept them together on my left and pumped everything I could into the Avatar, but I wanted to get the lone wolf and chainfist into the squad of walkers.

I cast LL on the Avatar only to have his Farseer cancel it and my priest lose a wound! Great....

(2) The Avatar keeps coming and the Fire Dragons? move up in a transport to back it up (not that it needs back up!). He snipes another LF and takes out 2 Rhinos one on my left and another on the right.

I Move up again and this time remeber to pop smoke on the rhinos. The fangs take some shots at the Avatar taking it down to 3 wounds.

(3) His Avatar gets closer, takes a shot at my Grey Hunters and then charges in, killing 3 and I wound it in return.

I unload my second squad of GH on my left, move up the guys on the right and the Lone wolf, and my speeders ds in behind some cover. I shoot the Avatar with bolters and then charge in taking another wound from it.

(4) After some poor shooting and me losing another 'Fang and a speeder, the other is shaken and can't shoot. His Avatar wipes out my Rune priest and some more GH.

I advance the Lone wolf and the 2 squads of 'Hunters on my right, charge a transport with the 'wolf, which I stun but thats it!

Meanwhile his Avatar takes out some more GH and leaves me with 2 wulfen and 2 Wolf Guard in combat with it, by now it's down to 1 wound.

(5) He shoots and kills one squad of 'Hunters on my right, the lone wolf, and blows up the last Rhino and the boy's all pile out.

I finally kill the Avatar with my last powerfist hit and consolidate all of 1" anything else and I could of got stuck into some guardians coming to join the party!

(6) See's him pretty much kill everything else I have on the board!

What I learnt.

Don't divide the pack! I should of kept everyone together and hunted like... well a pack! By spliting my force they couldn't protect each other.

Shoot the Avatar with everything you have! If I had taken him down early the game would of been very different.

The lone wolf should of gone for the avatar not the squad of walkers and should of started further up the table.

I need more Long Fangs, I'm planning on dropping my small Gh squad for 5 more Missile launchers and a Razorback.

Other than that I actually had a good day. It was fun to get back into 40k and I'm glad my local club has some new players willing to help an old wolf get back into the game. One of the reasons I left was it turned into a power game club with people that would "bend" the rules as they saw fit

I'm playing him again on Thursday so any advice would be good.

Good to hear to you've had your first game back.

To be honest, its sounds like you have hit the nail on the head yourself - armies like eldar rely on splitting a part off your force off and then annihilating it with their heavy (but soft!) hitters before rounding on your remaining units with overwhelming force. Keeping your forces together so that they can support each other is key to success against them as any packs left on their own are likely to get quickly dispatched by their effective anti-PA weapons.

Avatars... Yes, they can be a real pain. Shooting is vastly preferable as its high S, WS and power weapon attacks will make short work of most of your standard models. Certain characters (e.g. wolf lord with WC or TH and a SS) and powerfist wolfguard are quite effective against them in combat, but shooting is still preferebale as it is always likely to cause you casualties first due to its high initiative. Cowering in cover also works (I don't think it has any 'offensive grenade' abilties does it?) as it means you will usually strike first, which is crucial. Remember that most of your space wolves will often get the same number of attacks by counter-attacking as they do on the charge, so staying in cover and firing first before counter-attacking when they charge you is often more effective.

Best of luck in the re-match!
