Brush bristles splaying...

So i've had a pair of Raphael 8404's, a size 1 and a size 0 that i do the bulk of my infantry painting with and they are great, hold their point really well and hold a good amount of paint. I take good care of them, dont get paint in the ferrel and wash them properly with Masters brush soap after every long session.

But today i find that all of a sudden they wont hold their point. When wet they do, but during painting or when dry the bristles start to seperate like this....

The ferrel looks clean, and i havent really done anything different than normal. Its odd that both brushes have started doing this at the same time and trying to think of a reason. Could it be that the water i used last night during cleaning was too hot and weaked the glue?

It's quite possible, frater - never wash brushes in warm water. However there may be the possibility that the brushes have become 'too old' - it's vague, I know but (as far as I'm aware) all brushes eventually do this. Given the explanations I'm leaning heavily toward the former though, frater.

Why are you calling him frater?

I think it may be the water as well. I make sure my water is dead cold.

Hmmm, odd. Well maintained kolinsky will last you practically forever. I really suspect there's a build up of paint inside that ferrule. Even if you're careful not to dip the bristles that far, capillary action will suck the paint right in there. If you've got a brush holder, soak the brush in W&N brush cleaner and restorer for 24 hrs. And I mean soak, as in up to 80% of the ferrule is submerged (right in the bottle). Wipe off the gunk, rinse brush in running water (room temp) then soak again until there's no gunk left when you wipe.

PS: If you want to take it further, condition your bristles (Mane & Tail is perfect). Followed by a thorough cleaning with brush soap. Don't rinse off the soap on your final wash of the brush. Give it a point by wiping it across a paper towel and let dry. Do this often enough and bristles' natural tendency will be to form a point. Just remember to give the brush a thorough rinse in the water pot before you paint.

If it doesn't work. Sorry, at least it served you well. :HQ:
