Sevano Tomasin
It’s been a while since I last graced these hallowed forum corridors. A few nasty family matters came up and I found all drive I had for the hobby simply drained out of me. But, I’m back. And I’ve got a little project to keep me busy. I’ve seen Forge World’s various armour packs, and decided to bite. Being a fan of MK III Iron Armour, I decided to order a set, and the character conversion pack. But - I'm stuck, and all out of ideas. The project - create a semi-display set of five 'heroes' of a chapter - I have 2 sorted - a running champian (or captain) and a very bionic-ified techmarine (who I've also added some green-stuff bits to around the chest and right leg). I'm trying to give them 'dynamic' (or interesting) poses, hence the running and gunning character, and the techmarine who is standing ready, sword drawn and pistol aimed. The only problem now is – I don’t know what/who the other three should be, nor do I know what chapter. Any suggestions? At the moment I have an Iron Hands, Ultramarines 4th. Company and Space Wombles Reclaimers forces – but I’m not sure who I should try and paint these guys up as. The only real plan I have is for the techmarine, who I intend to paint red. group shot - Captain/champian on the extreme left, techmarine in the centre. I have one marine with a sheild blu-tacced in place - any ideas for the other arm? http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g424/Hubert066/P10115892.jpg The techmarine - in a dismantled state http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g424/Hubert066/P1011587.jpg Running and Gunning http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g424/Hubert066/P1011595.jpg Thanks for reading. Lestat
I too am a fan of the Mk. III armour. I am currently in the process of creating a Heresy-era Tactcal squad for my BA's. My initial thoughts for the other Heroes of the Chapter would be a senior Apothecary, a Chaplain and maybe a standard bearer. My second thought would be to create your own versions of different honorific titles a Chapter bestows upon it's captains - Master of the Fleet or Master of the Armoury for example. Sevano Tomasin
Thanks Lestat. I agree about making some sort of apothecary (although due to my own 'unique' style of converting, he may look like he has a chainfist...) I'm not too sure about making a chaplain or standard bearer. I'm intending to make a champion of some kind(or atleast someone with a shield and sword) My idea is just to creat a group of five visibly different 'characters' from within a chapter (again, not sure which chapter). I'm half tempted to follow the DoW2 route with the characters. Any suggestions on chapter? Part of me is thinking about making them as Ultramarines 4th company, but at the same time, theres a little voice in my head shouting "do something different!". Lestat
Have a look at various bitz sites for the Apothecary parts needed - it will work out cheaper than buying the command squad box. Everyone will have thier own opinion on which Chapter you should do. My only suggestion would be to do one of the original pre-Heresy 20 Legions because that way it would tie in nicely with the time period the Mk. III is from (just leading into the Heresy). If you can get hold of it, the Horus Heresy: Collected Visions is full of inspiration and ideas. Failing that, a quick Google search would provide some ideas too. Olis
I don't suppose we could have close-ups, could we? Does your camera have macro? Don't get me wrong it looks good so far but I want a closer look. Sevano Tomasin
Thanks Lestat, I'll see if I can source the book (or the pictures) I'm split between Ultramarines and Iron Hands for chapter/legion. My camera isn't really that useful for close-ups - but I've tried to get some of the details on the techmarine (who, at the moment, is the only character to have undergone any real detail and 'conversion' work - and I use that term loosely...) http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g424/Hubert066/IMG_0249.jpg http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g424/Hubert066/IMG_0243.jpg http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g424/Hubert066/IMG_0244.jpg Is that any better? Olis
It's better, yes, thankyou Sevano. I appreciate the difficulties of using a camera for close-ups it wasn't designed for. That said, nice techmarine, dude. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/228214-heroes-of-the-chapter/#findComment-2735338 Share on other sites
Lestat
The Iron Armour lends itself well for converting Techmarines - must be all those additional plates bolted on. Consider that idea filed away for future reference ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/228214-heroes-of-the-chapter/#findComment-2735434 Share on other sites
Sevano Tomasin
Thanks chaps ;) The Iron Armour lends itself well for converting Techmarines - must be all those additional plates bolted on. Consider that idea filed away for future reference ;) What? Someone borrowing my ideas on the B&C?! I feel honoured! (Especially since its always the other way around ;)) I have plans in the future to do a 'real' IH techmarine with servo-harness based on MKIII armour. I have to agree, the first time I saw the armour I thought "I'm sure I can make that into a techmarine...". There's something about the techmarine that doesn't quite seem right to me, but I can't quite put my finger on it. I'm also thinking of putting some more wires/cables on the techmarine, this time on the front. What do you think? Cheers guys S.T Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/228214-heroes-of-the-chapter/#findComment-2735457 Share on other sites
Lestat
The front looks fine to me. You maybe add an auspex to his right thigh with a cable running from that to where you have all the others going into his backplate. I would be tempted to swap the sword out for an axe or thunder hammer - seems more techmariney to me. Sevano Tomasin
I've tinkered with the techmarine. Whilst I like the sword (and bionic arm) I understand your suggestion Lestat, but I fear an axe or hammer would look too big on the spindly little techmarine. I am tempted to give him the bionic power-fist from the commander upgrade kit though. Auspex on right thigh (slightly hidden). I added some cables to the front - I like them (for now), I thought I'd see what you think: http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g424/Hubert066/th_IMG_0252.jpg Right, as various people have once said "one step forward, two steps back". I know that the group is going to consist of a captain/sarge/running loon, techmarine, apothecary and champion (leaving 1 more) - I just don't know how to build the apothecary and champion. I can have one of them standing and the other running, or both of them running. I just can't decide which. And its here that I need some help. I feel the apothecary looks better off running - but I can't help but hear the tune to Bay Watch in my mind when I see the apothecary running... edit - his fist now has the drill bit added to it http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g424/Hubert066/th_IMG_0257.jpg vs stationary http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g424/Hubert066/th_IMG_0258.jpg I like the champion stationary, but again, I can't help but think of Modern Warfare 2's riotshield madness when I have him like this... http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g424/Hubert066/th_IMG_0260.jpg The other version, running: http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g424/Hubert066/th_IMG_0265.jpg So, suggestions? R3DM0H4WK1988
if you havent decided what chapter to put these in i'd definately say you're ultramarines, mainly because i'm in the planning stages of a pre heresy ultramarines army myself, i'm loving the pre heresy kits also i have one question how easy is it to convert the new character kits into plastic models? Sevano Tomasin
I'm thinking that I'll have them as Ultramarines 4th Company. I already have a 4th Co. force, so this will fit in. The techmarine and apothecary will be in full red and white (respectively) so it would fit. - Pre Heresy, did techmarines and apothecaries have set colours, or did they keep their chapter colours? I'm still not sure how to do the fifth marine, so I'll leave him alone for now. I've enjoyed building these guys so much that I've ordered another batch to tinker with. Without a doubt, I'd happily say these are the best FW (infantry) sculpts around. Anyway, the four marines so far - http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g424/Hubert066/IMG_0273.jpg http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g424/Hubert066/IMG_0274.jpg The apothecary - I'm really happy with the pose I finally got, looking like he's executing something whilst walking forwards. To me, his pose says "I may be a healer, but that doesn't mean I can't kill you. And enjoy it..." http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g424/Hubert066/IMG_0266.jpg So, thats the group so far. Unless anyone has any suggestions for posing them, I think I'll prepare them for undercoating. What's the best way to paint blue? I'm looking for a nice deep tone. Sevano Tomasin
Ok, sorry for the double post, but I've started painting. The apothecary is almost complete, save for his eye, pistol, base, chapter/apothecary logos and shoulder-pad trims Same goes for the techmarine, he's mostly completed. http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g424/Hubert066/P1011598.jpg http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g424/Hubert066/P1011599.jpg http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g424/Hubert066/P1011597.jpg What do you think of the blue? Is it ultramarine-y enough, or does it look a little bit too much like the Crimson Fists? Any suggestions on how I should paint their helmets? http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g424/Hubert066/P1011595-1.jpg Suggestions, comments, critcisms and questions welcome as always guys. Retrograde
Cool conversions S.T. I'm not 100% sure because of the pics but that blue looks perfect :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/228214-heroes-of-the-chapter/#findComment-2737561 Share on other sites
Doghouse
I really like the look of the apothecary. When you take the pictures try to put them up against a flat surface like a wall or book stood on end so that the camera focuses on the mini, it'll make the models easier to see mate. :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/228214-heroes-of-the-chapter/#findComment-2737711 Share on other sites
Olis
The blue is good, frater. Just think how it'll look with highlighting - much brighter still. :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/228214-heroes-of-the-chapter/#findComment-2737712 Share on other sites
Sevano Tomasin
Thanks guys ;) I'm pretty happy with the blue, the only problem comes when I try to add the green company trim. I'm starting to think I should just leave the captain-like character with white trim. Either way, I don't want to touch the blue (aside from highlights). The techmarine is pretty much done aside from a few minor details and the base. Painting the Cog-wheel symbol is a pain... http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g424/Hubert066/P1011608.jpg http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g424/Hubert066/P1011609.jpg Group shot (I've excluded the champion character...as the test subject for the green trim, he isn't looking so healthy anymore) http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g424/Hubert066/P1011614.jpg http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g424/Hubert066/P1011615.jpg Thanks again guys Q&C welcome as usual S.T Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/228214-heroes-of-the-chapter/#findComment-2737869 Share on other sites
