Space Hulk: Death Angel Review

Recommended Posts

I was in Barnes and Noble today and while looking at card games I saw a Blood Angel Termie and a Genestealer on a box. I looked at the box and saw it was a Fantasy Flight Games/GW product so I decided to pick it up. After reading the book and playing a few games I have a review for it:

Presentation:

The game is very self contained and comes with everything you need, but I could see using the Space Hulk minis instead of just cards. The cards are very nice looking with great art and texture. The cards are very high end and are nicely made. My only complaint is some of the markers are cardboard when plastic ones would have been easy to make.

Fluffiness:

This game represents the odds of Space Hulk perfectly. You have 6-12 termies with various equipment against a ton of genestealers. The odds are stacked against you and you must survive.

Game play:

The games rules are easy enough with a read through and a demoish game. Its fairly fast moving once all parties understand what's going on. Best of all anywhere from 1-6 people can play so anyone can join in and the difficulty scales accordingly (the number of players scales the number of marines you get). The fun thing is everyone is working together as the Blood Angels and the stealers are kind of automatically run.

Overall: 8/10. Its a good game with good rules just a tad wonky to figure out due to some bad rule book layout design. I wish some componets weren't punch card but otherwise all top notch.

Pros:

Great representation of space huk

Well run game

Can accomidate any number of player

Cons:

Some punch out pieces

Takes up a bit of space(verticle game layout with 5 decks)

12 total termies:

6 paired members (its how the game works)

Half are standard sb/pf they are all paired with one of the following

Libby

Th/ss

Heavy flamer

Assault cannon

Sgt with power sword

Thunder Claws

They operate as far as selections as teams of 2, but its a three team minimum (1 player) and goes up to all 6 teams or a total of 12 (3 or 6 players).

Should I rewrite this better in the librarium? This was done on a blackberry and can easily be expanded/fixed. Glad I could help though I'd never seen it before either.

Edit: I correct myself one of the standards has a chainfist but it really adds nothing besides flavor and looking cool.

I picked this up on Wednesday. It's quite enjoyable, even against myself. When I first started, I was chopping through it like nothing, and wondering if I had made a mistake, but then I started travelling, and saw how hard it could get. At the end, I had one heroic assault cannon terminator who was holding off four swarms of three stealers by the skin of his teeth, while desperately trying to activate the bay doors.

I got this about eight weeks ago and was intending to write a review once I had the time.

Since you've done it I'd just say I agree with your pros and cons except that I have no problem with the punch out pieces as they are very high quality.

In my experience it's even more brutal for the Terminators than the board game version. It took me three games just to get out of the first location - the way that the genestealers can flank (jump behind) your terminators combined with the ability to only Move or Attack in a single turn is murderous. We can now win but it's very close - the last game I played we started with twelve terminators and ended up in the situation where there were fourteen 'stealers versus one terminator who needed to roll a 0 or 1 in order to activate the control panel and win otherwise the stealers would kill him in their next phase. He managed it but it was tense right down to the last moment.

I haven't yet ordered the print of demand expansions but am very tempted. I'll post comments here if I do get them.
