Mk.III Iron Armour Tactical Squad

Howdy folks,

When I visited Nottingham way back in the middle of November last year, I bought myself a set of Mk.III Marines and the Character conversion set with the intention of building a 5-man Heresy-era BA assault squad. Well I've actually gotten around to glueing them together and have decided, after getting my grubby little hands on some RT weapons, to build a Tactical Squad instead. I think the best bitz from the RT weapons were the missile launcher (which needed a little cleaning up and some TLC) and not one, but two plasma guns. Add into the mix a good dose of BA icons, and I think I've got the start of a pretty nice squad.

I have also ordered another 5 Mk.III's and some Phobos pattern bolters to complete the squad (as you can see from the pics below, the original RT bolters won't fit without repositioning the mag - something I'm not too keen to do and so will keep them for a Heresy-era Rhino or something)

As always folks, any C&C are more than welcome!

Really nice use of parts here Lestat, very authentic. What did you use for the locator on the missile launcher?

Repositioning the RT bolter mags isn't too difficult. One cut under the barrel removing the mag and the part it's attached to, then just slide back and glue. Phobos pattern for the win though :P

Thanks for the compliments. The locator/targeter is actually cut from one of the current missile launchers (the little square piece attached to the mouth of the launcher).

Mainly because I would have had to move the mags on the RT bolters to make them fit, I chose not to use them as I felt that they wouldn't feel right. I suppose I could have repositioned the arms through cutting and GS so that the hand braced the bolter behind the mag, but knowing my luck, I would make a complete mess of it :HQ:

I would have the some worry, I think. :HQ:

Anyway, really digging the plasma gunner, though that might just be because he has a 'retro' feel to him. ;)

Know what you mean ;) The plasma gun just seemed to fit the rest of the squad so well.

Very nice!

i'm still on the fence if i should give the pre-heresy thing a whirl.

I'm not intending to build a complete pre-heresy army - this squad is being done because, in my opinion, they are some of the best sculpts ever done by Forgeworld and the Mk.III is my personal favourite.

Ha! What strange timing brother, I myself just bought a set of Mk.III armour too while I was at Warhammer World yesterday. Your marines look excellent Brother Lestat, I only hope that they look even better once painted and that I might glean some inspiration from thy work.

Got to agree with you there. Having built FW kits before, including some of their infantry figures, I was expecting these to be a nightmare - I've got to say, I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the MK IIIs I got.

I can't wait to see you finish these up - they're looking good so far. Another MK III fan

Especially your squad leader. He really looks 'the business' the way you've built him, he looks very imposing. I think its really nice, seeing some of this RT-era gear given a new lease of life - the missile launcher really suits the MK III armour imo.

I plan to go a little old school on these guys with a true BA red paintjob. You remember the one that was very, well, orange? Thats what I'll be using as my inspiration along with ideas from Codex: Angels of Death.

Having had my fair share of resin mishaps - warped Rhino doors, mishapen blobs that were supposedly Cadian veterans etc......., I was plesently surprised with these sculpts.

I've got a few RT ammo pouches and things which I intend to take molds from and produce enough for the squad. Theres still some work to do on the missile launcher guy as I want to get him looking like the rather static 2nd edition Devastators with the joystick/controller thing in his left hand.

Taking this project one step further, I've just won my bid on a completely unbuilt Mk. 1 Rhino. An absolute bargain for £7.51 including postage. With a little bit of conversion work (two twin-linked on top as counts-as stormbolters) this will hopefully be a pimped out ride for the squad.

Ah, retro Angels eh? Fair enough, my own Mk.III's will be joining five Mk.II's and recieving some Umbra Ferrox bolters as they take up the mantle of the Sternguard. Not exactly Blood Angel-ish I know, but I dearly love Sternguard (and that special-issue ammo) and I've had good results with them before.

I've always loved the look of the Mark III armour. Are you gonna make the armour a bit more Blood Angel-ish by adding more wings and stuff?

Either way, looking good! :D

Yes I am. As you can see from the sarge, I've added a small chalice to the front of his armour and a winged blood drop to his right shoulder pad. The rest of the squad will be similarly adorned with blood drops and chalices, but not the extent of the current BA models with all that bling.

Ah Brother Lestat! So you did decide to get some Mark IIIs after all :D

Nice job!

Yes I did - and theres another five on their way to me (hopefully!)

The power fist looks so good on Mk.III :P

The back of the fist seems to mimic the extra armour plates that the Mk.III has.

Lestat, where did you get that grail on the Sergeant's groin guard?

It was actually one of the dangly bits from a BA shoulder pad. I carefully trimmed it off of the pad and glued it to the front of the groin guard.

I'll probably do something similar with the blood drops and phials you see hanging all over the other bits of BA armour.

Yes I discovered it after posting my question, I hope you don't mind me borrowing your idea. :)

Well folks, it's been a while since my last update but I have not neglected my Mk. III's. I'm still waiting for a few RT era bitz to finish them off, but I do now have a 20 man squad armed with Phobos pattern bolters.

First off, we have the sargent which I'm pretty happy with. The helmet crest is converted from a Dire Avenger helmet and helps make the Sgt stand out form the rest of the squad.

I have also been busy making molds and casting bitz out of GS (mainly because I am STILL waiting for some RT bitz to arrive!) I'm pretty pleased with the holstered pistol.

I have also managed to get hold of another RT era missile launcher which is in near perfect condition and so that will be replacing the original one I had.

Group shots.

If you made more of those GS pouches, I would totally buy some off you, for variety to the equipment on my marines, I especially like the first one you showed, the buttback thing. I assume you designed those pouches yourself?

I love, just LOVE the plume on the Sergeant, I may have to stealz. >.>

The only issues I see are that the missile launcher marine isn't actually holding the launcher, and he looks really really static compared to the other marines. I'd have personally given him a bolt pistol and had him aiming at something that had gotten too close and needed some help with the goop clogging the inside of it's skull.

The other issue I saw was the winged blood drop on the sergeant, it looks like it could easily break off, and when I first saw it I assumed it wasgoing to be converted into an Emperor's Children Legion symbol.

Aside from those things, great models, I really need to gather some cash and shell out for some FW armor sets.

Unfortunately, the pouches are made by taking molds of original GW RT-era Marine bitz so I would not be able to sell any ^_^

I wanted to keep the missile launcher guy static in a nod to 2nd edition Devastator Marines when they all had shoulder mounted heavy weapons and stood in exactly the same pose.

The winged blood drop is pretty securely glued on and I've got a pretty good feeling it won't come off ^_^

By all means, steal away on the plume!
