Deathwatch Marine

Recommended Posts

I always wanted to paint a Marine holding an auspex and since a good friend gave me some deatwatch bits here's the end result: a deathwatch marine searching for filty xenos! The gloss on the shoulder pad is just for the decal. The mini will be matt varnished. However I think I should experiment with that gloss lacquered look a bit. Seems interesting. :)

Nice model man. I love Deathwatch marines. I particularly like the gloss effect. The only problem I see is that the left shoulder plate is supposed to have the chapter badge on their, not the company badge.

Normally, yes, but this the Deathwatch, frater - Chapter symbols go on the right shoulder pad as they have been displaced by the Deathwatch symbol. This is how they're meant to look. :tu:

Thanks for your kind words everybody! :) Now that I'm looking at it again the glossy red of the shoulderpad reminds me the glossy red on Forge World's Brass Scorpion model: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-4000...S-SCORPION.html The paintjob there is more elaborate but this method could be used as a substitute for anyone wanting to achieve a similar effect with less effort.

And here's the recipe for the shoulderpad:

- Drybrush Tin Bitz

- Drybrush Boltgun Metal

- Two coats of the old GW Red Ink ( I paint the ink normally as if it was a paint and I don't dillute it. If you don't have red ink try the new Baal Red Wash)

- A thick coat of Vallejo Gloss Varnish (you can use any gloss varnish)

And a link to how I used this method on my marine army: http://burnedbrush.blogspot.com/2010/07/pa...ce-marines.html

*Scrambles for pen and paper* Must. Write. Down. ^_^

i really like how you painted the trim of the "right" shoulder pad in silver/gray. My personal opinion is that it should be black to match the rest of the model, but I've seen lots and lots of DW models that have the parent chapter's trim in place. ie yellow for SW or white for Ultramarines.

Well done SiR well done.

Very smooth painting, contrasts in colors and textures (btw, will u do all chapter pads in gloss ?), a nice work indeed, lens on bolta visor seems a bit odd to me, some grey-blue optical effect would have done better IMHO and I would prolly have chosen another colour for the base, inducing further contrast to the whole but its a pleasure to see, can't wait for more.

Gnarly, I think I got my paint recipe for my future Blood Gorgons...thanks brother!

Stunning model, sir. Any more?

@ Chapter_Master: Thanks! ;)

@ Brother _Fatiswon: To be honest I always paint the shoulderpad trim in a silver metallic colour on marine minis. Not sure why. I just like the colour and well... I'm a creature of habit. :)

@ Dark Sensei: I've already said I'm a creature of habit, right? Cityfight bases and green lenses have become staples in my painting. Also I find green lenses and gems easier to paint compared to other colours. It's as if GW's greens can be used to highlight each other with almost no colour mixing and planning at all. I guess it's half habit, half laziness on my part. I am in the search for recipes for lenses and bases however so if you have any let me know. ;)

I almost forgot. Actually I don't gloss varnish all the shoulderpads on my chapter because (due to lazyness again) I've aplied the chapter icon only to sergeants and characters. I'd see how the mini looks after it's varnished and I may gloss the shoulderpads on those Marines that actually bear the chapter symbol.

@ 1000heathens: I think It will be a one off mini. I always wanted to paint a mini holding an auspex and I always wanted to paint a Deathwatch Marine so it was like a "two for the price of one" offer. I find black hard to highlight properly so I don't think I'd have the patience to paint many black minis. Actually my painting revolves mostly around reds and metallics which are my favourite colours so the mext mini will incorporate these colours in some way. :P

Really nice, especially the shoulderpad, as people have said. The red stippling effect looks brilliant. Have you varnished over the symbol as well because it looks less shiny?

One thing is that I believe traditionally the left arm is meant to be silver, not just the shoulder pad so you might want to do that to finish the model off.

@ koran: The chapter symbol is varnished too. Actually I aplied one layer of vernish, I attached the decal and then applied another layer of varnish to seal the decal. I guess the symbol looks less shiny because the rest of the shoulderpads is paintd in metallics. I know that the left arm is usually painted silver but never really liked that look since I think it upsets the colour ballance of the mini having that much silver on one side. :ermm:

A nitpick, I'm always the nitpick, but Sun Reaver had it right.

GW Deathwatch marines

The Deathwatch symbol takes the place of the chapter markings, the chapter markings slide across to replace the company markings, which disappear.

The model itself is very sharp. Wish my blacks looked even half as good. :)

Ah, well, I accidentally said left when I meant right. I am aware of the Deathwatch and am quite an avid fan of them, in fact I even GM a Deathwatch RPG group. If you reread my post, you will notice I said it is supposed to have the chapter symbol, not the company symbol. The OP put a single yellow teardrop, which makes me assume that this is a marine from the Blood Angels second company. He should have put the winged teardrop symbol of the Blood Angels instead.
