10 Paladins in a balanced, friendly list?

Hi all,

I'm really considering throwing a unit of 10 Paladins into my 1750 list. I like how difficult they can be to kill but I like more how much firepower they throw out. I'm looking at the following unit:

10 Paladins: 4 Psycannons + Hammer + 2 Halberds + 2 Falchions @ 660pts

Add in a Librarian with Shrouding and they can slog or DS in and enjoy some decent cover saves. Now this may not be optimal but I like it. The question is what else should I add?

I tend to use Coteaz with 2 units of Psykers in Rhinos for S7 AP2 pie-plates. Then a Vindicare and 2 Psyflemen. That comes to 1543.

Any thoughts on what else I'd need to make this list work?

I've used a 10 man Pally unit in friendly games.

I loved it, my mates hated it.

Far too durable, unless you've tricked your list to face them. You won't need the Libby, thier inate 5++ will be good enough for the amount of AP2 wepaons you'll normally face.

List currently stands as this:

HQ:

- Librarian: Shrouding + Shrouding + Warp Rift + Quicksilver + 3 Servo-Skulls @ 180pts

- Inquisitor Coteaz @ 100pts

Elites:

- Vindicare Assasin @ 145pts

- 10 Paladins: 4 Psycannons + Hammer + 2 Halberds + 2 Falchions @ 660pts

Troops:

- Henchmen: 5 Psykers + Acolyte in Rhino @ 94pts

- Henchmen: 5 Psykers + Acolyte in Rhino @ 94pts

- Henchmen: 6 Warrior Acolytes + 3 Meltaguns in Razorback w/ Psybolts @ 104pts

Heavy Support:

- Dreadnought: 2 TL Autocannons + Psybolts @ 135pts

I watched a mate use 10 Pallies and Draigo in an 1850 list, the Pallies did a solid 10 wounds of shooting each turn against a SW army.

Unfortunately in the end the Pallies got wrecked by a Wolf lord on 1 wound (Seriously he saved like 7 power weapon attacks), still they really opened up my eyes.

Also you might want to consider a OM Inquisitor in TDA with Psycannon

The argument against the apothecary basically amounts to the fact that, as 2-wound terminators, opponents will work hard to get their weapons which are either S8+ or AP2- aimed at them. Either of these deny FNP, so if your opponents come prepared for your paladins, then the apothecary isn't going to do much for you.

Personally I plan to try it out and see how it works for me anyway, but it's a fair argument.

And the argument against this nonsense is "what will piss you off more? Losing your Paladin to plasma fire or lasgun fire?".

Why wasn't he killed outright by a NFW? Sounds like your buddy screwed up. Thats what they make Halberds for.

Wolf Lords can get Eternal Warrior from Saga of the Bear. With NFW's release, that is becoming a much more common Sage for Wolf Lords and other assorted SW HQ's.

I thought bear was standard equipment for Wolf Lords? Don't think I've ever seen a list without that saga.

I wouldn't call that a really friendly list. You have almost all of the nasty units in the army in a single list save purifiers.

A single squad of paladins isn't that bad to deal with, most opponents will be able to take them, just not easily.

I think we'll find paladins to be over-rated and not worth their points within a few months. They have an initial shock factor atm taking on players new to them but within time they will be replaced in lists with regular GKT.

I play DriagoWing, and have been with great success since the codex came out. Paladins can be absolutely nasty to deal with. Though, as I said, most people will be able to handle a single unit of them.

I'm curious, what are your tactics in regards to tarpit armies?

I'm planning now to run Draigoswing...

Draigos & Librarian w. 4 Paladins - Stormraven

Techmarine (Nemesis force sword, stormbolter, servo harness, rad grenades & blind grenades) w. 5 Paladins - Stormraven

Interceptors

Vindicare Assassin

G

So far Paladins slaughter witches, bloodbrides, and even orks in CC(Only the klaw is likely to be removing models). Though, I haven't ran into a true hoard army yet, looking forward to it. I also have PT dreadknights with heavy incinerators. That and as many psycannons as I can, I usually have enough firepower to put a damper on most enemy units. Also, each paladin unit has holcaust as well. 8 psycannon shots, 4 stormbolter shots, and a pieplate can do some damage, and that is only from a five man unit.

Allocate overwealming force to one portion of their army at a time.

This sums up EXACTLY what the GK's are about in my mind. You headhunt a specific element of the other guy's army, wipe it out and move on. Spread around and you'll get fragged, focus and fight on your terms.

I wouldn't mind 10 pallies in a friendly game. They'd be ripped to shreads turn 2 when the plasma- and meltaguns drop in on them.

And that could be the psychological victory. Undoubtedly they would be trying to claim a little cover, negating half of those which are not always in high number anyway. Feel No Pain from an Apothecary would kick in for lesser arms. Meanwhile a DreadKnight, maybe a few Interceptors or mounted Strike squads could be flanking.

It is all theoretical, of course.

Paladins are the classic tank.

Ah, that is what a love about this game. For every move, a counter. For every counter, another counter.

That is a good part of the game indeed. Biggest problem for that unit though, is that they can quite simply be ignored. They can only ever kill a single unit in turn, and that is what combat squads are for. Also, if they are not scoring, I'd go straight for his scoring troops, and ignore the Paladins as much as possible. Those paladins will be like 750 points, hq will be around 150-200 (or more), leaving room for two strike squad or something to that extent. People who like Palas will notice this problem in two months time.
