chaplain belisarius
this is probably a daft question but- if a model with a nemesis warding stave is in close combat, he gets a 2+ save BUT does he get to attack in close combat using his warding stave too? (im guessing yes but the wording is a bit unclear) thanks! ^_^ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/228759-warding-staves/ Share on other sites
Thaelion Hexis
The codex says the effects of each special type (sword, halberd, hammer, falchion, stave) are in addition to their core rules, that they are force weapon. The description of it being defensive is just compared to the halberd, falchions and hammer which provide additional offensive ability. The sword is stock equipment anyway. Noirceuil
Thanks for the posting the question, as well as, the answer. I was pondering that very same thing when I was considering the NWS. So S4 FW allocating a 2+ inv on the wielder .... NICE :-D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/228759-warding-staves/#findComment-2743103 Share on other sites

Red Lost Soldier
It can be used at each discrete initiative step also. For example I charged my GKT into Astorath and DC including a PW and a TH. It saved one wound from Astorath at I5/6? (2++ rolled twice!), one wound at I4 (PW), and one wound from the TH at I1. Payed for itself in one round and turned the combat from a loss into a win. Chairman_woo
wow! this is an excellent weapon...can imagine my brother captain grinding down a greater daemon with this weapon...:P While I agree it is an exelent weapon under alot of circumstances I would suggest you give the captain a sword as he already has a 4++invun which would become 3++ with the sword for free! The only charachter I'd say they were worthwhile on was librarians as they will be a prime target in CC due to their buffs and only haveing 2 wounds. In a squad of terminators or paladins however it can be solid gold, with a bit of luck its the gift that keeps on giving! I can completely understand why they made it work in CC only, it would be horrendous otherwize. chaplain belisarius
plus swords look cool...:P but if i had to heroically face lots of monstrous creatures, it would make my brother captain much more likely to survive! kollar
I don't see the point for a Warding Stave on any other character than a Techmarine I think. Swords will give the other HQ's an increased InvSave for much less points. Warding Stave on the Techmarine allows him to get a chance to use his Servoharness/Extra arm however. Which is a nice bonus. Gentlemanloser
If only Warding Staves allowed you to use thier 2+ save versus Perils... Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/228759-warding-staves/#findComment-2744204 Share on other sites

While it can be awsome for the reasons outlined earlier in this thread, i.e. soaking wounds at multiple initiative steps I do mostly agree on what you are saying there. I agree its not so usefull on most charachters, totally agree on the techmarine if you are gearing him for CC i.e. awsome grenades of awsomeness, but librarians get a decent look in here also I feel. If you are using a libby agressively in a terminator or paladin squad he is going to have a bullseye painted on his face in CC. A Warding stave buffs him from 4++ to 2++ so its already a better investment than most charachters and forces the enemy to choose between potentialy wasting alot of attacks to down him, or ignoring him and attacking the squad leaving all those nasty buffs in place (Quicksilver & might should make them regret that on your turn). Without the stave the libby is a easy, obvious and expensive target in CC, fine under many circumstances but if you expect to get stuck in (or stuck at) it feels like a worthwhile investment to keep your 200ish pt 2w charachter alive a while longer. Since when do libbys have a 4++? could've swore they didn't have an iron halo. or are you refering to the termie armour plus sword?
