Pre-Heresy Iron Hands techmarine

Recommended Posts

This little build/conversion based from a doodle I did. I wasn't going to make it, but after finding I had some left-over parts from something else, I thought I'd try it. I've got a few questions though, as I'm not sure what to do next and would like someone's opinion...

The idea is to make an IH techmarine, who looks as if he's slowly walking towards something he's going to execute.

Iron Hands character in pre-heresy MKIII armour. Limited bionics, only an eye and left arm. I'm trying to contrast the TM and the harness - I want the techmarine to appear big, bold and blocky, but the harness to appear spindly and thin.

Whilst I'm a pretty big IH fan, I've always been slightly confused by the Pre and Post Herest fluff - IRRC, the mass bionics don't arrive until Post, do they?

I'm giving him a full harness, only with a slight difference - I'm (trying to) having the lower arms folded up along the backpack. However - I'm not overly keen on the position and way it looks at the moment, so if anyone has any suggestions for the lowers arms - please, go ahead and tell me :) (At the moment the lower arms are only green-stuffed onto the backpack)

My other question is weaponry - I'm not sure what to give him. I'm tempted by a plasma pistol (which he's going to be aiming at something vile on the floor), but I'm not sure about the other.

So, thanks for viewing. Criticism welcome, and if you've got any suggestions I'm open to them :)

Cheers,

Well IH always had a fetish (well :cuss ) for bionics even before the Heresy.

And as a Techmarine I would expect him to have more, but thats for you to decide.

But the progress looks good, keep it up! :cuss

For the lower servo arms I'd suggest going the traditional 'around-the-sides' route - I can't think of a better alternative really.

As for weaponry, have you got the option to magnetise the arms? If not I'd go with the plasma pistol. It gives a feeling of potency to models whereas bolt pistols give an aura of dependability (to me, at least).

I'll be looking forward to seeing this guy assembled and painted. :)

I'm building a MotF for my DIY chapter at the moment and I've gone with Storm Bolter and Thunder Hammer, mostly for in-game punch. Is he going to be purely for display or for gaming as well? If you're going to use him for gaming, I'd suggest not giving him a plasma pistol because he's already got a TL one on the harness, but if you like plasma spam then why not?

Thanks for the comments guys.

@Olisredan - I don't think I can really magnetise the arms. I think I understand your opinion on the bolt pistol - whilst its a nice weapon, it isn't really effective on its own?

@celes - I'll be honest, I haven't given it much thought. I think he's probably going to end up as a display model. I agree that TH and Storm bolter is a good and fun combo to have him running with. But, for now I'll just keep him with the plasma pistol.

Painting - I have a vague idea on the colour scheme, but I'm not 100% on it. I someone with a great understanding of the fluff- like bannus to help.

I'm thinking of keeping it simple, black, white and gun-metal. Even though he's a techmarine - it is pre-heresy, and IH, so I'm not sure if he should have any red on him.

Ok, the harness so far - I have a...thing built on the top-right arm. Plasma cutter? Flamer? The top left arm with be a proper servo-arm.

The bottom arms - still not sure. I've removed the bits I had to try and sort something out, but I'm leaning heavily towards having them folded up along his backpack.

bannus(if he's reading) may recognise what the banner I have on the cutting table will be for... (thanks!)

Cheers for reading and the comments guys

Again, C&C welcome

Really sorry for the double post, but I've gotten some more work done on this guy.

He currently has a cutting torch (flamer/plasma) on the top right arm, and normal grabby-claw on the left.

What do you think of him so far?

The lower arms - I'm still working on them, but I think I'll just have them folded up along his backpack.

I'm going to add a few bundles of cables to him too, and a few sneaking out from his chest-plate.

Cheers guys

C&C more than welcome

Thanks :(

I've finished the harness aside from a few wires I'm adding post painting. After looking around for inspiration, I came across the pre-heresy Ultramarines techarine artwork (he's standing next to a lamppost). Since he had his harness folded up, I decided I'd try and do that. That said, I'm feeling pretty tempted to remove the bottom arms, and just leave him with 2 - 1 grabby arm, the other arm being the cutting torch thingy.

This is what Mr Techmarine currently looks like.

He doesn't look too clustered up does he? Like I said, the lower arms are only GS'ed on, so they shouldn't be too difficult to remove.

Looking good, really good - almost makes me want to order some Mk III models too!

What were the heads/legs like? I got some Mk V ones a few months back and they were really bad, not smooth at all

I've been looking at that model and I kinda like it but it's taken a very long time to realise what seems wrong to me - he looks top heavy. Unless the other arm is going to negate this feel I'd go to my original suggestion and say to use the wrap-around look. ;)

One thing you could go for if your model is ending up looking too top heavy is to go the "Dr. Octopus" route. One thing that never made sense to me was a techmarine can "jack-up" a tank with his servo arm/s to work on it, but with only two legs his base of support is rather limited. The "Dr. Octopus" route would be to add 2+ additional "appendiges" to the servo harness whose function would be to serve as outriggers, giving him additional legs.

Might require bumping him to a 40mm base, but would certainly look cool.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

keiththe MKIII armour is without a doubt the cleanest FW kits I've ever had (not just their infantry). No warping, very minimal flash. The only problem arose from the backpacks, but that only adds a few minutes to build time.

In the past, if I'd wished to actually cut up a FW infantry model, I'd result with little parts snapping at the wrong point, and being flung off into the distance, never to be seen again - or, simply crumbling to dust.

These? Its like cutting plastic. Really impressed. Would very happily buy these again.

Right, so, he's a bit too bunched up. And top-heavy. Ok.

I've removed the lower arms, as they'd only make painting difficult. I can have them swing around if needed, but I'll be honest, I'm not really a fan of the wide Doc-Oc pose.

After I've painted up the parts, I'll start toying around with posing him.

As for his left arm - its...erm...currently lost in the warp. Ok, postal service. I'm currently toying around with giving him a sword, an auspex, or just an open hand. It's going to be bionic, whatever it holds.

Cheers guys.

C&C welcome as usual
