My Black Templars Revitalisation

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

This is my BT army I started on almost 10 years back. I just got back into 40k after a 7 year hobby void, most of my army was painted when I was 14-15. The none-painted or half painted ones are my recent additions.

Will keep updating as progress comes along .

Thank you for looking!

Ahhh, this warms my hateful little heart. The robes/tabards/capes are superb in particular, and you did a helluva job on the Chaplain. The one thing which pops out (aside from the occasional mold line :)) is the standard Initiates' shoulders. The point where the white/off-white meets the trim is kinda patchy on more than a few, it might not hurt to do a quick and simple wash of Sepia or something similar to darken and blend the crevices there.

Thank you! The chaplain won me my first GD at the local store ^^

And thanks for the advice! Will try that out asap! :) Also considering going over some old highlights to thin them out and make them look more sharp and clean!

Good idea. Some of the models (those poor bikes) have kinda messy highlights. Something which has worked well for me is two stage highlighting on black: the first being a rather wide line of roughly 50:50 black and gray, the second a much finer edge of pure gray. The beauty is that you can easily tighten up the line of the first highlight with another coat of black, and it creates a nice little fade as opposed to the harsh and sudden transition to a bright gray. Takes a bit of practice, but I'm rather fond of the results I get on my own Templars doing it.

These are some beautiful models brother, really nice paint jobs!!!! I really like the way you have painted the Templar cross on the helms of the assualt sqaud, simple yet very striking. My fav model is the Marshall/Castellan with the power sword & bolter with box magazine. The chaplain also looks very nice too, great paint job on him! Nice work! :(

Thank you Firepower, Dorn's and Nachocuban. You have motivated me already! ;)

I have decided to strip the paint of the worst painted models (bikes, tactical marines, scouts etc.) and redo them from scratch, including the bases!

Pictures to follow shortly!

So I headed your words Firepower, I went back and corrected the highlighting and shoulder pads on my more recent initiates, and re-did some painting on some minor places.

I have decided to scrap the old classical marines I had with bolt guns as I want to get the more recent ones to add more individuality and character to each model and the whole army. Here is my progress so far, I need some opinion on the checkered bases, they are not complete but will look quite similar when done, just highlight missing.

I just need some opinion on the checkered bases before continuing, should I leave em checkered, or go with plain grey, industrial ruin kinda look?

Thanks

The checkers look good. However, I'd recommend darkening rather than highlighting the beige parts. For one, it's ground: it should be dirty. Two, if the shades match that of the tabards and decorations of the marines too closely, it al may end up looking like a magic-eye test from random angles. So, I'd keep the current shade of beige on the checkers as the highlight, and fill in the main part of the square with a slightly darker brown, maybe a Snakebite Leather yellowy shade. A was of the orangey Vermin Brown afterward could really pile on the worn and battered look.

Edit: on second thought, the orangish dirt and residue on the tiles wouldn't make a lot of sense if the dirt around them is black.... Not sure how I'd proceed frankly.

Killer army, like those who've said previously before, you've got the skill, but seemed to have lacked pacients during some of your painting sessions. The reason i say this, is because most of these guys look beautiful, with the exceptions noted above.

The Imperial fist on the marine in the beginning. That is an incredible idea, and so characterful for such devoted zealots to praise an icon in its original form.

Thanks for the C&C!

I agree with you all, that is why i'm going back to re-do most of the old ones B). Here is an update with the bases done, i ended up dry-brushing the whole base with codex grey, washing it with devlan mud and then highlight the gravel with fortress grey. Turned out pretty ok. Although, i noticed some more patchy areas on the marines themselves which I will go back and fix. Also I am not very happy with the power sword, the front side of the blade seems a bit messy, will fix that as well.

I really need to get better lighting and magnifying glass or something, its quite hard to see in my room, and only notice mistakes after I have taken pictures!

Anyhow here it is. Next up are the assault marines, refining and rebasing!

Ohhhh, very nice work. I was hesitant to follow through with my previous comments by saying to darken the tiles to match the earthen black, because I've never actually had any real luck trying to do such a thing. Now it's clear you know some tricks that I don't. Either that, or you're a faster learner than me :D

I hate to keep haranguing on the same point, but are these new guys representative of the changes you made to the shading on the shoulder armor? If so, I'd recommend reconsidering. The dark-lining around the edges is a deep gray, but the color of the pad itself is more in line with browns. A deep brown would be more appropriate I think (but a much lighter brown may look more natural). But to be fair this is a very finicky nitpicking point to what are otherwise continuously improving models :ermm:

Edit: Yeah, I didn't see it on account of the broken link for the last pic, but the power blade does indeed seem to be in need of touch ups. I won't bother giving my own formula because I honestly haven't found one that works well enough for me, but peruse the Tutorial subforum for 5 minutes and I'm sure you'll find some more capable insights.

Thank you! ;) I tried washing it with the orange-brown wash as you said, but did not come out so great as you later predicted. So i tried devlan mud as i imagined a darker-mud tone would go better with the look you initially suggested.

Yes they are representative of the changes, and yes your absolutely right, I only noticed so after looking at the pictures, will fix that as well!

Sorry about the broken link, I resubmitted it, picture does seem to want to show, but link works now. And thanks, I will have a look around for tutorials :(.

@Eberious, Thank you!
