WIP DA succesor

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I've finally decided to get off my butt and start painting my DA. I was tossing around ideas in my head for a while about how I wanted to paint my army and a couple things kept coming up. I really like the black scheme of pre-heresy DA/RW/BT but I also really like the bone colored armor so what I'm currently planning on doing is painting the armor black and picking out the details in bone and going for either a single broken sword or the current DW symbol done in black against a white/bone background.

Here is my progress so far.

Right now it's just a black basecoat with a highlight of codex gray. I'm planning on finish one test model to see how the finished product will look and tweak my scheme from there. Next I'll paint a highlight of 1:1 codex gray/skull white, do the bone areas in the normal DA way graveyard earth/bleached bone/ 1:1 bleached bone/skull white. After that I'll probably give the whole thing a badahb black wash to tie it all together. I'm not sure if I should do the weapon casings in green or red yet though, I'm thinking red so I get a nice striking color in there. Then probably cover the whole thing in tiny lines of scripture.

Planning on naming these guys the Nephlim. They are going to be a crusading army similar to BT in that they have over 1000 marines but otherwise follow normal DA Company layouts, they will just have a lot more than 10 companies lol. While most DA successors were created to hunt the fallen as their primary goal the Nephilim were founded for the time when the fallen are finally all caught and Lion el'Johnson returns to lead the legion once more. The Consecrators may take care of the DA's oldest wargear but the Nephilim care for the bulk of the former DA fleet. When they work alongside other unforgiven it is normally because the other chapter could use the assistance of more capital ships. The Nephilim specialize in bordering actions and space hulk clearance.

Droma, coming along very nicely!

Great minds thinking alike and all that, if you'd like to see some black Terminators with bone detail, I've got my first test model done in a similar way for my Stoneburners 1st Company. Hopefully you may find some methods to improve it though. :D

Good luck and look forward to seeing what else you get done!

I saw your thread and I really liked how yours were coming. I think I want to try and go darker on the bone though.

Edit: Check out ellis_esquire's wip thread near the bottom of the page. His ravenwing are pretty similar to how I'd like my whole force to turn out. I don't think I can pull it off as well as him but I'd be really happy with table top quality.

I was looking at the WIP photos and the new TRON movie kept coming to my mind as the highlight is so bright to the black of the rest of the mini. I keep thinking it might actually be a good look to try in the future.

I see a lot of good potential in this army. I look forward to seeing finished pics in the future.

It's bright now and I still have the bone to put on, but after that I plan on hitting it with a wash or two of badahb black to dull it all down and blend the highlights more. Then use a brighter red for the weapon casings and all the metal in a dull metal look with maybe some bright highlights. The shoulder with the chapter symbol will be skull white with a black(maybe red) chapter symbol. Then maybe some scrollwork/scripture on the armor to make them look super devout.

Just got done with the 1:1 codex gray skull white highlight on all of them. That was about 3 hours of painting, I'm done for the day not sure when I'm going to do the bone as I'm really busy for the next two weeks. But I enjoy staying up late so I may do them sooner than expected. I'll post more pictures after the bone coats.

I finished the bone last night. Here is the updated progress shots.

I'm kind of liking them as they are right now but I still want to see what it looks like with a wash. I'm going to wait on that though and do all the metallic bits in boltgun metal first(I need to buy the wash still lol).

Some of them are still missing a crux terminatus because I was using AoBR termies and using arms from the DA upgrade box. The AoBR termies are one solid arm piece so I'll need to buy some in order to finish those guys off.

Actually, that is a common mistake... unless you take final pictures just to show the final product.

WIP pic, IMO, are to show how you are doing AND (for me the most important part and the one I most appreciate) to make it easier for people to give feedback on what to improve before the model is done ^_^

New update. I have all the painting done on these guys except for the power weapons. I'm looking up tutorials right now to and seeing what I want to try and go with.

I tried doing the really tight lines of script on the armor but I wasn't liking how it was turning out so I decided to stick with this black/red/bone color scheme. I still have another two squads of TH/SH to do as well as Belial, 2 dreads, LR and LRC, 6 bikes, 2 attack bikes, and sammy on jetbike. I've got a bunch more PA marines, a razorback, various HQ's, and Azriel to do after my doublewing army is finished. So expect to see more updates in the future.

Much better pics :lol:

Also, may I suggest you do of the bases? There is a major difference between a black flat base and a texturized one... plus it helps getting the overall feeling of the army.

As for PW... a simple and good looking way is "shading" (unsure if this is the correct word in English).

Idea:

Paint the blade white

[---------------------------------->

Now shade with a very light grey

[-----------------------------||--->

Now light blue

[-----------------------||--------->

Now dark blue

[----------------||---------------->

Now black

[--------||------------------------>

Basically, its a simple form of NMM.

Keep your layers thin and let them dry properly (shouldn't take too long).

Hope it helps!

Edit: This is really easy to do by AB...if you want, I'll post some pics tonight.

I was planning on doing the bases eventually but probably not until I get the rest of the force painted. I still need to go and pick up some PVA glue and some type of basing material. Also thinking of picking up some nice custom resin bases for my bikes/deathwing. I saw some very nice temple/church floor style ones I liked.

As for the NMM I was thinking of doing something like that. I think that is what was used on the GK models done by the heavy metal team. I really like the look but probably wouldn't go with that color scheme.

Edit: Found a good tutorial for painting that style of blade. http://www.youtube.com/awesomepaintjob#p/u/11/AImKoB10ans It does involve using an airbrush but it seems you can achieve the affect with brushes it will just take a lot longer and requires being pretty good at blending. May try sticking with the red/black scheme and sub blood red in for the hawk turquoise. I'll have to test it on a spare PW to see how it works out.

  • 3 weeks later...

I've been busy with a lot of stuff but I've made a little bit of progress so far. I painted my TLC's and PW on my termies(forgot to take pics of those), I built 3 TH/SH termies two of which have CML's, and I converted up a Belial out of lysander/dread/chaos termie lord kits. Tomorrow I plan on going to GW and buying a box of grey knight terminators to use as sergeant/honor guard type characters. I needed the apoth arm and banner from the kit anyway. I'm thinking about converting the halberds into thunder hammers as I have enough stormshields from the DA upgrade kits I bout a long time ago or just using the halberds as counts as. I also want to see how the new finecast stuff is quality wise so I'll pick up kaldor draigo as well chop off the sword and use the demon hammer from the GKT box as his thunder hammer seeing as he already comes with a very lovely storm shield. As for the TH conversions I clipped the heads off the power maces from the DA upgrade box and was thinking about using those as the heads of a thunder hammer.

Enough chatter on to pics.

My hobby bench.

Termies that need painting

gallery_33390_6088_193451.jpg]

I'll continue updating this thread with more progress as I finish stuff. I still all the new termies I'm building, vehicles, HQ's, and plenty of power armored marines to finish up.

You got a deep table...nice? And smart use for the brushes!

I saw the GW painting tray/table they sell and got the idea from there. This thing was pretty cheap to build probably under 40$ for materials.

I picked up a Draigo yesterday, he looks amazing in resin. I also ordered the grey knight terminators. I'm going to use the demon hammer from that set to turn Draigo into a TH/SH Belial and use the halberds to make some thunder hammers. That also gives me the apoth bits and banner and some really sweet looking sergeants for my force. Or they're going to get turned into a TH/SH squad, I haven't totally decided. I eventually need one more ravenwing box and I think I'm done with my DA. I plan on investing in terrain after that.

Edit: Didn't want to make a new post till I have pictures but I got those 3 termies, belial, a dread, and my LRC primed and I started painting the termies. I'll update with pics when they are done, hopefully sometime in the next couple days.

Edit: Update may take a little longer. My pot of boltgun metal is all dried out so I need to pick up a new one before I can continue moving on.

  • 3 weeks later...

It's been a while. I've been making progress but just haven't gotten around to taking pictures. My three deathwing squads are almost done just need to paint some power weapons and add highlights to eye lenses and things. The GK halberds are counts as thunder hammers. I also converted a couple thunder hammers into halberds by cutting off the hammer part and glueing on the blade from those short GK swords(forget the name).

Without further ado....

Belial
