commander alexander
Sagas be sung of Wolf Lords, Battle Leaders, and other brave men aplenty. Shame it is, that the silent priests of Iron have their sagas unsung. Let it be no more, may it ring in the halls of the fang, to the beat of the hammer and anvil! May your hearts burn with pride! May your spirits be alight like your molten forge! Let the sagas be sung! I see that the Iron Priests are neglected, so here is a place to record the sagas of your Iron Priests, from their presence on the field of battle, and of their skill in their craft, and what ever fancies you. And pictures are welcome I shall start, its short because I can't find the stuff I've already written. Bodvarr the Iron-Heart (I think his name means "he who has an array".) He either goes on foot, or on the back of his thunderwolf Ironhide, who as the name suggests, is more machine than beast. He carries a mighty chain axe, that can chew threw man and machine alike, a shield that can shrug off the mightiest of blows, and an expertly crafted meltagun. He earned his "title" as bieng a warrior of uwavering will and bravery. In a fearsome battle with a chaos warband, he lost both his hearts to a Terminator Lord. He was able to survive, and replaced his hearts, with mechanical units, giving his title a more literal meaning. Although he was outwardly hardened by the fight, he was inwardly softened to his brothers. If a person truly earns his respect, they shall have no better friend, or arsennal. He has, as Iron Priests often due, added bionics to his body, but not all are like the others you may see. He has replaced his skeleton with one made of adamantium, and of course one of his hands, as is part of ritual, is also bionic. He is as tough as nails, and loves to search out the "big-stuff" on the battlefield, especially if it's made out of metal. If he is needed elsewhere though, he will not hesitate, for he holds his brothers lives in a dear regard. Here is a picture of his current reincarnation, it is a work in progress. To see other pictures, you can see them at my WIP thread in the WIP Forum. http://i391.photobucket.com/albums/oo353/caj007/05-2011WarHammer016.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/229007-the-isles-of-iron/ Share on other sites
Wulfebane
I don't have a personal saga for my iron priests, but when thinking of iron priests in general, there is a particular bit of lore I tend to keep in mind. I hope you won't mind me posting it. This is an excerpt from a SW article in White Dwarf #156, written by Bill King, Andy Chambers & Jes Goodwin: On Fenris, the Forgemasters are men set apart from the bulk of the population by their knowledge of weapon making and ironwork. The secrets of smithing are passed from father to son. Forgemasters are organised into the mysterious Guild of Smiths, an organisation with links to the Iron Priests of the Space Wolves. Iron Priests are chosen from the sons of Forgemasters in secret rituals on the Isles of Iron. Here candidates are picked by both a Wolf Priest and an Iron Priest. They do not face the questioning of the massed. Space Marines but are instead examined by the Master Iron Priest himself, and their knowledge of the mysteries is tested. To prove their courage they must place their hand into the blazing mouth of a great forge cast in the shape of a grinning Wolf's Head. This is the ultimate test where the aspirant must sacrifice part of his own flesh to achieve unity with the Machine-God. When the blackened stump is removed it is replaced with a servo-gauntlet grafted directly onto the aspirant's hand and linked to his central nervous system. The Machine-God has entered the aspirant's body and he has begun a lifelong journey towards understanding its mysteries. Iron Priests must undergo the ritual of the Blooding exactly like any other aspirant, and they then spend a period of training under the supervision of the Wolf Priests where they learn the use of weapons. At the end of this time they are sent on a pilgrimage to the Forge World of Mars, where they undergo training with the Tech-Priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus. Here they learn many of the secrets of the Machine-Cult. During this time they may also acquire many bionic enhancements, symbolic of their unity with the Machine-God, and useful to any artificer. When they return to the Chapter they take their place among the ranks of the Iron Priests, supervising the munitions factories and workshops of the Fang. They create the cyborg Wolves and Ravens for the Rune Priests. The Iron Priests are mysterious figures to their battle-brothers. They possess strange skills and obscure knowledge from the elder days and their concerns seem remote and unworldly. They do not take part in any of the great contests and many of their rituals are secret even from their fellow Space Wolves. They are outsiders, even as the smiths are on the world of Fenris. Perhaps because of this they are not resented. Their brother Space Marines see them as occupying the same position as the mysterious weapon makers did in their old society. commander alexander
Excellent bit of fluff there Wulfebane, Thank you. I quite like it, and it can easily be adapted to my own little bit..... Back to writing! If you were trying to make a point about their secrecy, I do know about their reclusive habits, but this being the Isles of Iron, its the Iron Priests own hangout :) . Wulfebane
No intentions of making a point toward anything. Just wanted to revive a bit of lore from the 2E era for anyone who wants to be inspired from it. commander alexander
A lot of us don't have access to the older lore,so thank you for posting it up. Anyone? Anyone else at all? A barrel of mead to anyone who posts a paragraph of official fluff, or of their own devising..... Valerian
No intentions of making a point toward anything. Just wanted to revive a bit of lore from the 2E era for anyone who wants to be inspired from it. Actually that bit was from the late Rogue Trader era (December 1992), but still great stuff, of course. Hfran Morkai
Brother Wulfebane, I thank you for that enlightening and interesting paragraph on the Iron Priests, I love the initial challenge. No tales from me yet as I'm still working on the project of my non-metal Iron Priest. I'm not old enough in the game to have read any Rogue Trader docs, so I guess they must've reprinted it in WD #156. I guess they really liked the fluff! White Dwarf 156 was published about a year prior to the release of the 2nd Edition Warhammer 40k Rulebook, so you have indeed read Rogue Trader era docs, since you provided a quote about Iron Priests from a WD mag that was published during the RT era. commander alexander
Oh if I didn't mention that already, pics are welcome. I filled Bodvarr out a little bit. When I get my computer back I will post pics too. Unfortunatley, since I have never painted anything for the most part, and have promised to not play until its all painted, I probably won't be able to write more on his saga from games. commander alexander
Added a picture of my Iron Priest. I have another Iron Priest in my WIP thread I wan't to use as Firenze. I hope to get both of them on the table for a small game in the near future. I would really love to see what everyone else has, or read their glorious sagas. FenrisWolf
My Iron Priest (when I finally get to building him) is Assar Gabrielsson. An aspiring smith from the Floridan Isles for to the south of the Fang, he saw the vehicles the wolf priests used as they journeyed the planet looking for aspirants. He wished to learn more of these fleshless beasts and so underwent the long voyage to the Iron Isles and sought the favor of the Iron Priests there. As a member of the Guild of Smiths, he was privy to the knowledge of the Space Wolves and set about earning the favor of the Iron Priests in order to become an apprentice. He passed the trials of the Wolf Head Forge and the Iron Gauntlet as well as the implantation of the Canis helix geneseed. He journeyed to Mars and learned the secrets of the Adeptus Mechanicus. He learned all about the chassis used for the great vehicles of the Chapter - RH-1-N0s, Land's Raiders, Land's Speeders and even the Thunderhawk. He reveled in the knowledge and sought all he could in the depths of Mars' great vaults and libraries. On return to Fenris, he took up caring for the great vehicles and teasing out new improvements to their design. He learned of the Blood Angels and that they modified their RH-1-N0 engines. He has spent years trying to learn what they have done to the sacred templates, but so far has come up empty - Russ and the Machine God have not blessed him with the understanding yet... Valerian
Oh if I didn't mention that already, pics are welcome. -Iron Priest Halfdan, attached to the Great Company of Ragnar Blackmane. I've had Halfdan here as a part of my SW forces since the mid-90's, but he's never seen a game. That's right, not one single game in at least 15 years. The fluff and models are great, but I've never been satisfied with the rules for the Iron Priests, or any version of a Techmarine. I hope that one day, one of the designers will get them right. Valerian
To be honest, I use mine with wolf lord rules, mostly because he never gets a chance to repair anything anyways. You know, that ain't a bad idea. I wouldn't use him as a Wolf Lord, but I sure could replace that old Bolter with a Combi-melta, and use him as a generic Wolf Guard with Thunder Hammer. You can never have too many of those. Hmmm. I guess that's one more project before I can call my Wolves "done".
