Godhead
So I finally got a chance to play a game with the new grey knights. I have been having a hard time deciding on a list that I liked. Part of the reason was the self imposed limitation that any list I ran had to include a stormraven and dread knight. My bud was like lets do 1750 and I was like.. OMG.. I can barely make a 2k list let alone fit in the stuff I want and need in a 1750. Here's how the lists shook out. I'll try to give a bit of a battle report as I was sort of surprised at the results. His list as best as I can remember it was: CCS 3x pg, 1xpp, vox in a chimera hvy flamer prow/multi laser 2x melta vets in chimera 1x melta vets in a valk 2x hydras 1x vang russ with pask 1x russ battle tank 2x vendettas 1x 6 man psyker battle squad Marbo My list Libby w/ might of titan, shrouding, quicksilver, warp rift 2x gkss 2x psycannons, 1x ndh, psybolts, rhinos 1x GKT 1x psycannon, bhb 1xndh and 3 halbards (all riding in SRGS with libby) Stormraven TLAC with psybolts and TL MM 2x Dread TLAC/TLAC psybolts 1x NDK p.teleporter and hvy incin. It was single objectives in each deployment zone with a spear head deployment mission. I won the roll off to go 1st. I deployed with 1 rhino as far foward in the center of the board as I was allowed to deploy. One dread at the halfway point of the table on the right flank, along with the SRGS and the NDK. I deployed the other GKSS rhino on my objective with a dread nearby. He flat out moves his two vendettas during his scout move. 1st turn: I moved the stormraven flat out right in front of his armored line and used potms to fire the assault cannon into the hydra squadrons, stunning one. The NDK shunted to keep up with the stormraven and flamed 3 chimera stunning one and doing nothing to the rest. One GKSS was out of range of the vendetta threatening my backfield, the other GKSS rhino didn't move at all and fired both Psycannons out of the hatch doing nothing as well. The dread in the backfield also failed to do anything to the vendetta due to two successful cover saves vs 2 pens. The forward most dread moved into a woods for a cover save and managed to bust off one lascannon on the other vendetta. His 1st turn he opened fire on the stormraven with the 1 hydra and to shakes it. He unloaded plasma and melta on the NDK, plus multi lasers from 3 chimeras. I had 2 invuln saves to make and one normal. I make both invulns and fail the regular save and only one wound was lost. The forward most Vendetta stuns my forward most rhino and destroys the stormbolter. His other vendetta fires it's two lascannons at the NDK, but was denied by a cover save buffed by the shrouding that was granted from a nearby woods. His russes did nothing. 2nd Turns: The libby and GKT disembark from the Stormraven, the stormraven flat outs into his backfield right beside his hydra squadron (and I subsequently forget to shoot them in my shooting phase ) The stormraven and rhino both clear their effects with fortitude. The NDK moves a few inches in order to flame and assault more chimeras. Neither GKSS is in range to fire at anything. One dread blows up the forward most vendetta. The other removes another lascannon off the remaining vendetta. The libby warprifts both russes and the psyker battle squads chimera. The psyker's chimera is stunned, the russ with the battlecannon is destroyed, and vanq is stunned. The NDK flames and then charges the chimeras, busting off two multilasers total from the shooting and assault phases. The GKT and the Libby assault the vanq using MOT and the squad used hammer hand. They blow up the vanq. His turn No reserves show up and he disembarks his CCS and the two melta vets. He shoots both hydras and destroys the assault cannon and immobilizes it. His single lascannon on the remaining vendetta shakes the rhino. He unloads plasma from the CCS and melta and lasguns from the vet squad on the NDK forcing 3 invuln saves and 2 reg. I make both reg and 1 invuln, leaving the NDK with one wound left. The CCS orders the other vet squad to 1st rank fire, 2nd rank fire and unloads melta and lasguns in the libby and his GKTs. I the hammer termie and one halbard termie. He tries to psyker battle squad me with the oogie boogie to lower my leadership and we roll off due to my hood. I roll a 1.............he rolls a 1..... phew!!! No ld lowering this turn. They make their ld test due to shooting. He assaults my NDK with the ccs squad. The NDK wins combat easily and they break. He catches them wiping them out. Turn 3: My forward most GKSS's rhino clears shaken with fortitude, makes a dangerous terrain test and moves 12" and disembarks the GKSS. The NDK jumps 12inches to the left flank looking at the side armor of the psyker battle squads chimera. The Libby and crew move up through difficult terrain. He warprifts the vet squad and the termies unload bolter fire on them. The psyker chimera loses its multilaser and the vets chimera is wrecked. The NDK flames the psykers chimera wrecking it forcing the psykers out. The dread in the trees blows up his remaining vendetta. The stormraven fires the TL MM and destroys one of the hydras. The GKSS unloads a torrent of bolter fire and kills all but 2 plasma guns in the vet squad. They break and start falling back towards his table edge. My Libby and GKT entourage charge the remaining vets through difficult terrain, and the NDK charges the psykers. The vets are wiped out and the libby's squad consilidates to his objective, but the NDK rolls 4 2s and then a 1 to wound from his single hit, resulting in a locked combat with the psykers. His turn 3 and marbo arrives. He pops up near the GKSS itching for some retribution. He drops the pie plate on the rhino and 8 GK's. He fails the damage the rhino, but wounds 7 of the 8 gks. They go to ground and 5 die. The NDK finally destroys the psyker battle squad and my bud concedes the game with only marbo, one hydra, and the valk with vets in reserves and me in control of both objectives. All in all I was surprised at how well my list handled all the av12. Warp Rift and Might of titan are awesome for popping vehicles. The rifleman dreads are amazing. The stormraven was great for getting the libby into position. I think there is a good chance it wouldn't have been immobilized had I not forgotten to shoot with it. The NDK helped pull fire off of the stormraven by placing additional pressure up front. I really liked the NDK. He wasn't amazing, but he was good enough. I love the heavy incinerator. Hopefully this batrep isn't too dry. It's late but I wanted to recap my experiences since I had my doubts as to how this list would play. Something Wycked
Thanks for the batrep! Always love to hear about the new dex in action. You really rocked that heavy armor of his, and the Stormraven really did pay off for you. How do you think you would have fared if he had deployed everything instead of reserving some things? Godhead
Honestly he did deploy everything worth deploying right off the bat (IMO). The only thing he had in reserves was a melta vet squad in a valk. The valk isnt a terribly serious anti tank threat, but it would been dropping off melta vets who are. He reserved them to threaten the squad on my objective. His plan was to drop off the vets, melta the rhino and then missle pod the grey knights. If he had deployed it, I still don't think I would have been all that worried about them. If he decided to try and attack my objective that would have given me one or two rounds of solid psycannon firing out of the top of the hatch. Once the vets were on the ground the stormbolters would have been hard on the vets in flak armor.
