Astral Claw wip log

Recommended Posts

Hey guys and gals. As some of you may have seen in the HoH section, I'm painting up some Astral Claws in the hope of amassing a 1750 point army by August. I've started this guy today with him in mind as a possible Captain for the army (local GW manager doesnt allow Forge World in his store). I thought i'd throw him up for giggles. Should have him finished by tonight. But can you guys help me settle on a theme for the bases? My BA are on grass bases but I want these guys to look different so perhaps rubble or industrial? What do you good fellows think?

Snow! All Badab War armies should be based on snow, so that when the eventual Badab War weekend at Warhammer world happens my guys will fit in and not be the stupid snowy kids in the corner.

(and yes, I'm aware that there has been/will be a Badab War event at WHW, but I couldn't/can't go, so it doesn't exist, lalalalala)

Is this standard for all GW stores? There's none in my area, so I've never set foot in one.

I'm always partial to Stonework bases, marble looks awesome.

if you go to your local home improvement store you can pick up free samples of kitchen counter top and use it for basing.

also, your GW manager is a d-bag. "let's turn people away from an already hard to get into hobby" what a pro.

Agreed seems pointless to ban Forge World stuff. But thems the breaks, still theres an independent gaming group up the road so thats cool. Started on my Techmarine. Only a kitbash and its a poor photo but you'll get the jist.

Cheers mate the helmets white and the armour is metals. I figured a captain should have a white helmet as the Claws were codex adherent up to the point they started absorbing depleted chapters into their ranks. I want this force to be just before they are awarded the title of the Maelstrom Warders but after Huron takes over and starts imposing his ideas, so plenty of the Tyrants symbol kicking about but still recognisable as a Codex chapter.

All in all really good, there is just one thing that bugs me a little, is the brown from the exhaust and the swords hilt. They don’t quite look as good as the brown on the shoulder guard trim! Otherwise great piece.

:EDIT: Oh my bad, the trim is gold huh? Anyhow, should add a little highlight to the brown!

Well what I've been told be the Manager of my nearest store (I go to two...) is that managers can decide. The store nearest to me bans FW rules (boo hiss as someone with an Elysian army) but allows the models (so I could use a FW ven dread model), while the manager of the store encourages people to use whatever the hell they like (especially for Apocalypse).

Anyway on topic... He is looking nice ^_^ Well most of my Imperial forces have urban basing while my Eldar have snow bases... any kind can look well... but I would say it is easier (IMO) to add items of interest to urban bases and as your models (I imagine) are pretty bright/light the darker urban base should show them off, while my Eldar with black armour really stand out on the white snow.

If you put sheets of polystyrene on the base (and then sand to texture it as needed) you can break the polystyrene to produce cracks or make impact marks and you can also put straightened paper-clips or straws (maybe make slime coming out?) sticking out of it to show pipes or rods withing the concrete that have been exposed by the damage.

Ammo casings also can also stand out pretty well with a darker urban base... Razorwire... and on bigger bases (such as a dread) you could use fine wire mesh as a fence and have it ripping through! Lots of cool stuff you can do :D

Cool cheers Helios I never thought of those things, I've just been cutting little rectangles off the sprue frames as bricks. Definitely gonna do that though. Yeah, a mate of mine used to work for GW and he said each store manager had a different opinion on it (eh Swindon are cool with it, but someone up the line would blanket ban any FW model or mention). Weird I know but that's what Independent Gaming Clubs are for. That and using scenery that isn't made by GW. Haha

Thanks mate I'm starting to get quite comfortable with it now.

Todays update is brought to you by the letters L and H.

I'm not afraid to say that I love this model. Great character and presence. I put him amongst my rank and files and he just stands out soooo much.

More progress.

Cheers man, no worries.

I cut up one of the supports from the interior of a drop pod then glued to Heavy bolter turrets to the side. Then after digging around I found the parts to the siege hammer from an Iron clad and fitted it as a covering. It's a bit of a place holder until I can find one on a bitz site or get a FW one. But I quite like it for what it is.

Cheers mate, they're very easy to assemble and get of the frame. The flash and mold lines are easy enough to remove but you can see where the mold hasn't lined up correctly in places which is a bit frustrating. There was also a big chunk of resin on the hand holding the axe which completely obliterated the detail on the knuckles which was a annoying. Otherwise it's so easy to work with its crazy. The servitors have absoutely no casting issues and were almost flash free.
