Grizzly Adams
Hi fellas, new to the SW subforum, long time Marine player and been playing BA exclusively since their codex dropped last year. I run a jump pack oriented BA army, and I began to notice I had a butt ton of rhinos/razorbacks, Land Raiders, Terminators, Devastators, and such that havent seen the light of day since I started my BA. So the idea began to creep into my head that I needed to start a new army, using all my old stuff, that were Ultramarines back when I was too young and stupid to realize that there is nothing cool about Ultramarines. Nothing. Their biggest accomplishment is missing out on the Heresy and getting butt beat by Nids. Anyway, off topic, so I began to read through the other marine codexes and came across Wolves. I fell in love. The fluff, the model range everything. So, I have just started a SW army and have a noob question about my HQ choices. I Really like the Wolf Lord, but i am curious as to if he is worth the points. In the lists I have made, he usually comes out to 200-215pts, decked in termie armor, frost blade, saga of the bear, and so on. In my BA army, i usually run SC's, but I really wanna give my SW's some flavor and stay out of the SC's as much as I can. I am a competitive player, being a member of a local gaming club and running the state tourney circuit pretty hard. I am just curious as to my options when it comes to HQ's, and if it is viable, or if you are better off just taking one of the SC's. Thanks in advance. maverik_girl
welcome to the Fang! as for your question... If it's in the codex then chances are it's worth the points or it wouldn't be on there. Since your starting out, just as I am. There isn't anything wrong with play testing the different HQ choices. While the more seasoned wolves here would say Rune Priest for the win. As for special characters, I thinks it's more about personal choice. commander alexander
Wolf Lords are well worth the points, but the amount you spend on HQ should reflect how many points the list is. Other than that, Wolf Lords can be decked out seven-ways-to-Sunday, just the way you like, and how you wan't to play them. If you run with Long Fang Packs, Rune priests are excellent choices to tag along with them, using Stormcaller for cover, and jaws, or living lightning to shoot. WG Battle leaders are just cheaper wolf lords, and I usually don't take wolf priests unless I'm going to take bloodclaws, or ragnar, then I put him with ragnar and his WG. Wulfebane
Based on the points range and equipment you have your Wolf Lord at, you'll likely have a better cost-effective choice in going with a Lone Wolf equipped similarly for what I'll assume is the same effect (To me, it sounds like you plan to charge your Lord to the front lines). As for HQ choices, remember that as SW, we get double the amount of HQ in our force comp., so don't put all your points into one when SW HQ choices even at bare-bones equipment are brutal on the table. Mav_girl said it best. Most everyone loves having atleast one Rune Priest. Front lines or chilling with your Long Fangs, you can't go wrong with having atleast one. If you like your Blood Claws, having a Wolf Priest (or Ragnar) is a good HQ choice. Otherwise, I am personally underwhelmed with a footslogging Wolf Lord or WG Battle Leader when compared with the other two options. However, putting them on a Thunderwolf or bike is something I've considered trying. techmarine Azuris
I have always found a termy WL with FB and SS, WTN WTT saga of the bear to be immense. His kill tally ranges from Ghazgul to Calgar as well as Methy :) I place him in a drop pod with 4WG termies and ppl usually charge them but thats no problem with counter charge rlly :) WP works rlly well too. Oh btw my WL comes to about 220points and always makes them back Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/229368-new-to-sw-hq-question/#findComment-2751840 Share on other sites

Whatever your playstyle, there's always a perfect HQ tac for the Wolves. CainTheHunter
Special characters are cool, but You can't be wrong with taking at least one Rune Priest for psychic protection of Your army and for making other guy's life difficult . Wolf Lords are great as well, but I am yet to field one and I know that he's going to be Thunderwolf mounted. Having no thunderwolf models and running mechanised or Loganwing lists, I've not tested WL in this edition. Don't shy away from SC - in Codex:SW You are allowed to make some specific builds ONLY if You take SC. For example, You MUST field Logan to unlock wolf guards (both in TDA and PA) as troops choices. That is the only way to play pure/mixed terminator army - unless You are DA or GK player of course. Also Ragnar builds are very offensive with incredible deathstar potentional. Njal to the contrary is a pure support character, not very capable in CC, but extremely dangerous with his Lord of Tempests ability - providing that he survives till turn 5-6. Grizzly Adams
ok cool, that is one of the things I wanted in the SW Codex, to really create and characterize my wolf lord, I am just glad that is is a viable option, unlike the BA captains... :tu: for a broader picture of my plan, i posted up my intended list here :tu: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/229368-new-to-sw-hq-question/#findComment-2752749 Share on other sites

Being now a SW player You must write down and memorise all Your WL's glorious deeds and sagas! And later brag about them here in the Fang! Or else - off You go to other pretty boys :) :) ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/229368-new-to-sw-hq-question/#findComment-2753037 Share on other sites
