puck
So I've got a terminator librarian model that I'm painting up in Deathwing colors and would like to paint the robes librarian blue. Should I use the same recipe as the armor, or since a robe is a more organic shape is there another recipe that would work better? I've had this post up in the general PCA questions section and the tutorial requests section but have yet to receive a response. What say the Unforgiven? he_plays_guitar
I have also painted a deathwing librarian, and painted him in bleached bone armor with a blue robe and a blue psychic hood. For the robes, I started with Regal Blue and mixed a little Chaos Black in it, and painted the deepest crevices of the robes. Then I painted the rest with pure Regal Blue, leaving the darkest parts of the robes alone. Then layer the robe's edges with a wide layer of Enchanted Blue mixed with Regal Blue. Then paint a thin layer of pure Enchanted Blue. Finally, I highlighted the high parts and edges of the robes with Enchanted Blue mixed with Ice Blue for the final highlights. If you do it like this, it will be a very gradual transition between colors and look very natural, instead of the hard highlighting you usually see with armor. Hard edge highlighting works well for armor and hard surfaces, but the blending of colors is better suited for cloth. It just takes a bit of patience. Good luck. Gillyfish
As he plays guitar says, blending is the key. Personally, I wouldn't paint the robes blue if the armour is blue unless you can make it look distinct (different shade, perhaps). However, if you do, try to get hard, sharply contrasted highlights on the edge of the armour, perhaps going for a glossy finish (use gloss varnish to do this or use inks instead of washes). The robes can then be painted more subtly, blending up with lots of layers of slightly lighter colours to give a more organic, gradual finish. An laternative might be drybrushing to give a rougher texture to the cloth. puck
To clairify, The armor of the model is deathwing bone, so a blue robe will contrast well against the armors white(ish) tones. I'll edit this post later with WIP pics. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/229450-robes-on-a-librarian/#findComment-2753890 Share on other sites
MontyBob
With my DW Librarian I went for bone armour and green robe. The white/green combo seems to work quite well and helps tie to a consistent theme if you're using greenwing. Brother Izrail
I think blue is the way to go, it connects him to his librarian brothers. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/229450-robes-on-a-librarian/#findComment-2758792 Share on other sites
Kebabyuchenko
My Librarian has a red robe, but then again, all my Termies have some bits of red anyway. Tanhausen
Suggestion: do a test model, even if its with only the base colours and a quick highlight... it usually helps to get an idea :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/229450-robes-on-a-librarian/#findComment-2759541 Share on other sites
