know of any good casting tutorials?

Recommended Posts

Hirstarts have a good tutorial on how to make a mould and use it.

Many gaming sites that focus on the 28mm far future SF armoured warriors game tend to frown on discussion of the "forbidden arts" so you probably won't get much help.

Thanks chromedog. Not sure why, as long as the sculpt is yours and not IP there isn't a problem.

I agree.

To some, knowledge of the "forbidden arts" leads to [certain unnamed illegal acts that are NOT theft].

Just because I know full well HOW to do it, it does not presuppose that I WILL do such a thing.

Generally speaking, unless you are needing 10+ copies of an item, casting it will NOT be cost effective.

EVEN workinprogress forums, where several resin casters congregate, insist on any casts (original or otherwise) being primed before display. Given that one of THEIR topics was on "clear casting" (for stealthy-type units, for example), priming does kind of defeat the purpose, don't you think.

I have seen a few good tutorials on Dakka

This is for a 2 part mold http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/242040.page

This is the one I prefer though, Blackhand's general tutorial.

If you're in the US, you won't be able to get pinkasil easily, but I have found Oomoo 30 Silicone and Oomoo 25 Silicone can be good replacements for the mold as they are 1:1 mix as well, and the company that makes those also makes some casting stuff you can use in the mold too.

Ever heard of something called Instant Mold? It's easy to use, reusable, comparatively cheapand I have not found anything that sticks to it - you could even potentially use superglue to cast a piece from the mold!

Here's a couple of links to it - http://www.bitzbox.co.uk/product_info.php/...ant-mold-p-7592

Hope that helps.

Very similar product to Oyumaru, out of interest have you found any suitable liquid casting mediums? I tried PVA but it largely evaporated before drying! I've heard Superglue can work but it's not very cost effective. I would try 1:1 pouring resins but I think they heat up which would destroy the detail of the molds?

I normally use GS or a similar 2-part putty. Superglue would work for a single sided mold (i.e. not in two halves) but I don't know of any really suitable liquid casting mediums.

I'm giving superglue a run tonight, fingers crossed! I've mainly used GS too and it's been a real success! Much better than trying to form the mold from GS too!

Let me know how the superglue works out - never tried it myself but it would be interesting to see the results.
