Captain Idaho
Hi guys just thought I would let you know how I got on at last weeks A Small Matter of Honour tournament. First up I want to say a big thank you to Wan who not only made sure I was there despite being the last guy to turn up (yes I got lost and he came running to meet me!) but he was also terribly busy yet still polite and shared a joke or 2 with me. Cheers for the great time bud! Anyway, I brought the following 2 lists: 1,250pts HQ Chapter Master - Relic Blade - Storm Shield - Digital Weapons = 180pts Honour Guard - +2 extra Honour Guard - Relic Blade and Combat Blade on Chapter Champion - Chapter Banner = 225pts Mounted in a Razorback = 40pts ELITES Dreadnought - Assault cannon - Twin-linked Autocannon = 125pts TROOPS Tactical squad - +5 extra Tactical Marines - Melta gun replaces boltgun on 1 Marine - Plasma Cannon replaces boltgun on 1 Marine - Sergeant has a bolt pistol and Close combat weapon = 180pts Mounted in a Rhino = 35pts Tactical squad - +5 extra Tactical Marines - Plasma gun replaces Boltgun on 1 Marine - Lascannon replaces Boltgun on 1 Marine = 190pts Mounted in a Rhino - additional Storm Bolter = 45pts FAST ATTACK Landspeeder squadron - 2x Landspeeders each with: - Typhoon Missile Launcher - Heavy Bolter = 180pts Attack Bike - Multi-melta = 50pts plus the additional 500pts which brings the total to 1,750pts: ELITES Dreadnought - Assault cannon - Dreadnought Close Combat weapon = 115pts Dreadnought - Twin-linked Lascannon - Dreadnought Close Combat weapon = 135pts TROOPS Tactical squad - +5 extra Tactical Marines - Plasma gun replaces Boltgun on 1 Marine - Lascannon replaces Boltgun on 1 Marine = 190pts FAST ATTACK Landspeeder squadron – 1 Landspeeders with: - Multi-melta = 60pts So there you have it, my Raiding force and full battle force. The first battle was 1,250pts against a great guy who was awesome to play against, though his list was fearsome! He had roughly the following: Imperial Guard 3 Veteran squads in Chimeras (one of which had a Lascannon). A Veteran squad with grenade launchers in Vendetta and accompanying the Commissar Lord. Leman Russ Executioner Squadron - 2 of them with Plasma sponsons! Sentinel squadron - 2 Autocannon Sentinels. THE GAME Kill Points and Pitched Battle. SUMMARY Hmmm. It was a disappointing start if I'm honest. I struggled to destroy anything for the early turns whilst every one of that Veteran squad's Lascannon shots either stunned or destroyed a vehicle, plus the Chimera Multi-Lasers did great at glancing my Rhinos to death. Essentially I was at a point where I was set to launch a counter attack consisting of a Tactical squad with Melta gun and the Honour Guard, despite those stun results and loss of my Dread. I was just a turn away yet the sniper Lascannon hit home again and took out the Tactical squad Rhino, leaving them stranded in front of the Leman Russ squadron and their 10 Plascannon templates with no cover! Their loss meant I couldn't remove the Leman Russ tanks which mean the Honour Guard were also an open target. If the Tactical squad at just half strength managed to Melta a Leman Russ and assault them with their automatically hitting Krak Granades, the Honour Guard would have had free reign to take out the 3 Chimeras and Veteran squads (plus the grounded Veterans and Commissar Lord after their Vendetta was destroyed), not to mention allow my Attack Bike to survive too. Oh well, you can't win them all. That's just Leman Russ tanks for you eh. 7-2 to him, though I did do a decent enough damage to the opponent's list to get some VPs at least. GAME 2 This match up made me laugh! What were the odds of 2 from team Ultras playing each other?! 1-1 I guess, since my opponent was our very own Alloyslayer and his awesomely painted 4th Company. Dawn of War set up and Capture and Control. His army was roughly: Lysander (looked amazing in blue!) Command squad - assorted weapons equipment (think there was a single Storm shield?) 2x Rhino-borne Tactical squads Vindicator Attack Bike Landraider(!) SUMMARY Things went badly for my poor opponent. I did feel for Alloyslayer since I got an early immobilise result on the Landraider, thus had a major advantage from turn 1! Also, I got 2 hits on the Plasma cannon, which did for a whole Tactical squad and my Honour Guard had it easy thanks to Lsyander having to march to my lines. Respect to my opponent whose head never dropped and he gave as good as he got by taking down the Honour Guard with the Landraider and earny some important tournament points (+1 for destroying my most expensive unit). Glad to get a convincing win, even if I was lucky to get that immobilise result! GAME 3 I was up against a nice young lad who had a nice army, using the Coteaz Henchmen list from the new GK Codex, now at 1,750pts. Capture and Control again with Spearhead. His list was: 3 Chimeras with assorted Henchmen, including 3 Jokareo (count as Squats!). A Rhino Henchman squad as above. Landraider Crusader with Coteaz, Inquisitor and rock hard unit of Henchmen. A lonely Razorback. SUMMARY This was border line child abuse! I concentrated on that Landraider and it's contents, blowing it up with a first turn Orbital Bombardment! I also had my units in place ready to hit it if he survived, so I felt tactical sound at that point! I lost an Attack bike in a charge from Coteaz after but no matter, I counter charged with a Dreadnought. Moment of worry when I rolled snake eyes to wound him (he was the only model with a Thunder Hammer) but then Coteaz missed all his attacks, so the balance was restored! The squad was ground down in a couple turns now the Dreadnought stopped rolling those 1s! The rest of my army picked apart my opponent's, destroying transports and Tactical Marines picking on Henchmen with impunity. By turn 4 all he had was a Chimera and a single squad, and by turn 6 I had wiped out my whole opponent. Special mention must go to his cleave build in the squads. With 2 Crusaders in each, plus the "Squats" and Death Cult Assassains, he had loads of invulnverable saves which really blunted my firepower and assault. However, T3 doesn't last long against the Emperor's finest, so I was happy enough. GAME 4 I joked in my previous game with the player on a table next to me that I didn't want to take his Eldar army on, and lo and be hold we were up for a game in our last 1,750pts game! Curse me and my big mouth! The guy was pleasant and we ended up voting for each other as best opponent. His army was roughly this: Eldrad (of course). 2 Pathfinder units. Dire Avengers in a Wave Serpent. Fire Dragons in a Falcon. Full unit of Striking Scorpions in a Wave Serpent. 3 War Walkers with dual Scatter Lasers. 4 Wraithguard in a Falcon. 3 Jetbikes (objective grabbers). The game was a Pitched Battle with 6 objective variant of Seize Ground. I stole the Initiative and dropped an Orbital bombardment on a Wave Serpent and clipped a Falcon. Unfortunately for me I only took off a couple weapons, but that's better than nothing! The Typhoons took out the Wave Serpent with Dire Avengers though, which was nice. This game was a real see-saw. Just as I thought I had him after he fluffed some damage rolls, I would fluff some armour saves! Over all we drew, with a pair of armies with reduced numbers all round. I felt I could have done better, but then I reckon so did my opponent. Still, I was unlucky to not kill the Jet Bikers with my Attack bike (missed and did nothing in assault) and my Honour Guard should have lasted longer (6 saves and 3 dead!), whilst my Dread struggle to kill the Fire Dragons at all in assault (slippery pointy ears), so for my part I could have won if I played slightly differently. The Overview Over all a good day of gaming. I finished 19th in the end, which wasn't bad considering my painting score was average at best (I'm a simple painter...) and there were some good learning points taken forward. I will likely drop the 2 extra Dreads from my Throne of Skulls 1,750pts list in October, for an Assault squad with Plasma Pistols. I will find the ability to deepstrike on the other side of the table invaluable in evening the score, though the loss of firepower is a blow. Still, play test is the name of the game. greatcrusade08
your game one opponent Dave from the muppets ran his mechanicus army again this year.. lots and lots and lots of plasma cannons... to be honest i think he was glad he didnt have to play me again :P its a very dangerous list though, one tailored to play your kind of list, straight down his guns... thats why a niche list like mine can beat him (although it was a great and close match).. these events really highlight the pros and cons to different types of lists.. well to me they do anyway. you had a great day with two good wins and a draw against a very worthy opponent.. i cant remember his name but him and rob 'Rathstar' i kinda hung out with last year (billy no mates) .. rathstar ran his DE this year, but last year he got third with tau and that eldar army came 2nd IIRC Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/229579-asmoh-report/#findComment-2755151 Share on other sites
DarkGuard
Sounds like a good day, and looks like you had some good battles there Idaho. By the sounds of your last game, it doesn't look you did much wrong, except buy some new dice beforehand :P. A question on your list, I've noticed that you tend to run a heavy bolter Razorback for the Honour Guard over a Rhino. Do you find the loss of fire point to shoot OB (and I suppose boltguns) worth it for the TL-HB, which can influence the game better than a storm bolter can while they're not assaulting? Thanks, and well done at the tournament. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/229579-asmoh-report/#findComment-2755433 Share on other sites

By the sounds of your last game, it doesn't look you did much wrong, except buy some new dice beforehand . Thanks, and well done at the tournament. Well I could have done a couple things better, as he took an objective last turn which I could have disputed had I remembered to move my Typhoon. Things like that. The Razorback is a matter of neccessity. I don't have a 3rd Rhino and swapping the Razorback for a Rhino means the Tactical squads can't be transported. But using the OB is easy enough as you just start out side the Razorback hidden at it's rear. In games with DoW set up you can place the Master out of sight (usually behind a Tactical in Rhino) but carefully considered so it is within the final distance of the Razorback when it comes on the table turn 1, gunning for a turn 2 OB. your game one opponent Dave from the muppets ran his mechanicus army again this year.. lots and lots and lots of plasma cannons... to be honest i think he was glad he didnt have to play me again its a very dangerous list though, one tailored to play your kind of list, straight down his guns... thats why a niche list like mine can beat him (although it was a great and close match).. these events really highlight the pros and cons to different types of lists.. well to me they do anyway. you had a great day with two good wins and a draw against a very worthy opponent.. i cant remember his name but him and rob 'Rathstar' i kinda hung out with last year (billy no mates) .. rathstar ran his DE this year, but last year he got third with tau and that eldar army came 2nd IIRC Yeah I felt a little like I was Paper-Rock-Scissored game 1, though should have done a bit better at least. I'm happy to hear the Eldar player came 2nd last year actually. He did remark that the draw ruined both of our chances of getting placed high, so it seems like I got a good result there. Brother Tual
Good work mate. tri dreads - how did the heavy gunner dread go? Assaulting fire dragons with a dread is risky.. they all have melta bombs and I5 - Its better than being shot at by them but its back fired on me more times than its worked.. Captain Idaho
Good work mate. tri dreads - how did the heavy gunner dread go? Assaulting fire dragons with a dread is risky.. they all have melta bombs and I5 - Its better than being shot at by them but its back fired on me more times than its worked.. Yes it wasn't an ideal choice to assault Fire Dragons, but it was a case of use it or lose it. Besides, I thought shooting an Assault Cannon and Storm Bolter first would do some damage but alas cover and poor rolling ruined that plan. I should have shot a nearby combat squad at them too instead of shooting at a Falcon and missing. One of my mistakes that may have cost me... The Heavy Gunner performed admirably, in the ToS and ASMOH both. It regularly got penetrating hits, including 3 against a Storm Raven in a single turn (though the bloody thing passed all 3 cover saves!), plus it put plenty of hits infantry when it had insufficient armoured targets. Did die alot, but you can't do much about that if the opponent was too scared to let it live. I highly reccommend a Heavy Gunner if you have other long range choices, since it can achieve so much at 24". If I had the points I'd give it Venerable, so it could hit on 2+, but I just couldn't justify losing anything else since my army is pretty lean as it is. Those of you who know Idaho in real life will not be surprised to know that I had to literally run a mile around Basingstoke to find him "Meet outside of the Lloyds Bank", "DAMN there are two in Basingstoke!!!!". Still after a broken phone and all of his numbers lost I suppose it was a good job I called him :) I have an apology to make to you about snapping at the end of the day, was a bit tired and emotional. Will make it properly next time I see you. Next year I will likely be playing, hopefully we can get Sgt Campbell in this time. Again it was your swing in luck which ultimately did you in, still at least you didnt get stuck with any chump players :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/229579-asmoh-report/#findComment-2756331 Share on other sites

Tesla Kiwi
Hi, i was the guy you played in the third game ;) i thought that it was a very enjoyable game with lots of cool moments "cough"honourguard getting wiped by the T3 dudes you have such contempt for" cough" grr damn land raider blowing up on turn one, cant get the treads these days it got blown up turn one in my next game as well :) ahahahahah so in game 1 you played daves imperial guard plasma spam. i played his army in a practice game at muppets (which i am a member of) and i got completley owned as all my vehicles were immobilised by 1 volley of his manticore...D': anyhoo thanks for the game and by the sound sof it you enjoyed the rest of the day as well which is good do you have any intention of going to Calneage (a doubles tournament being held at triple helix wargames) as i'd love a rematch using combat patrol rules (no orbital bombardment oh yes!) Captain Idaho
Oh hello mate, good to hear from you. Ha yeah you'll notice I didn't mention Honour Guard in our game! Your use of the wound allocation rules and way you built your squads was nicely done. Plus the army looked good too! Like I said, the game was horrific. I felt for you to be honest, as some games you just can't come back from a set back. Without trying to be patronising, I believe you could optimise the list a little better. 3 firepower squads with those damned Jokareo just sit back and bracket opponents with massed firepower. Don't advance with them ever! That took pressure off me, as there was no way I could handle 9 Lascannons a turn even at BS3! Then you have the invulnerable save assault units with perhaps a single Jokareo in, aiming to go forwards and disrupt attacks, counter assaults, take objectives and eat bullets to protect your fire support. As for Dave; he was a great bloke and a pleasure to lose against :D His army hurt big time!
