Nrthstar
It's wordy, and might be a piece of :cusse, I realized I haven't tried to randomly create anything outside of web comics and D&D adventures for years. A quiet that could pierce even the darkest soul held tight across the valley. Any who came here distraught or restless from recent battles could find themselves humbled by the peace. It was startling to see the snow come down in such huge heavy blobs, but there was nothing but silence; the ground, covered by a white perfect blanket, except for one dark hole. This is why Nrth had come here, and this is why he failed to notice the ice below his feet had grown thin. The silence was broken when a hand swiftly drive upward through the ice 20 feet from the original hole. Frantically another hand followed, grasping desperately for purchase. With a wolf like whine, Nrth pulled himself free of the cold death that waited below. Wearing only light armor he had borrowed from the scouts, Nrth stumbled away from the gap that splintered with each step in an attempt to reclaim. Upon reaching solid land again, Nrth buried himself in the snow, using what he remembered of the survival techniques drilled into him since birth, he used the fresh top layer to insulate himself. His altered Astartes body would generate enough heat to keep him alive, but he’d have to keep as much of it as he could to avoid losing any limbs. What a daft fool he had been, being swept up by the beauty of this place, so much so his ignorance outweighed his common sense. Pulling a flare from his dry kit and gathering some old man’s beard and what dry branches he could, Nrth set a small fire, and steeled himself from the cold with an impromptu shelter. He wouldn’t dare tell his fellow Claws about this one, Forte and Arez would never let him live this one down. Postal would likely smack him upside the head, and Mav Girl would probably just pistol whip him for his stupidity. As heat returned to him, his two hearts beating as one to ensure his limbs didn’t fail, Nrth felt his sense of humor return to him. A hearty chuckle rose from his lips, breaking the silence of the valley. His mirth was cut short by a low, deathly growl that came across the wind like a whisper. The moment Nrth’s chuckle went silent the beast struck. In a blur of motion, Nrth twisted to meet the creature face to face. Brandishing the heavy stick he had been using to poke the fire in a defensive spear position, Nrth jabbed at the beast, catching it just above the shoulder as it’s claws ripped at his forearms and chest. The stick snapped and both of them tumbled down to the edge of the frozen lake marring the perfect white blanket with red stains. Being mere feet from the creature, Nrth looked upon a beast that had been one of his greatest fears before he drank from the Cup of Wulfen, before him stood a Thunderwolf. Fear, however, had been banished from his heart by his mentors at the fang and in its void a wolf’s fire had grown to bursting. Laughter burned through Nrth’s core, and came out as a garbled chuckle; the wounds to his chest had crushed some of his ribs. The pain didn’t faze him though, for Nrth had been given a gift sent from Morkai himself. This was a chance to answer the question that had plagued him since he had been taken by the Skywarriors, was he worth the blessings they had bestowed. He had past their trials, and he felt infinitively stronger, but he still felt, unworthy. The beast winced slightly as it rose, the stick was jammed up against the joint in its shoulder, and it was still burning hot from the fire. Being larger than a bear though, this wound was nothing more than a nuisance. The two circled about, growling at each other, a display of fangs to show the other there was not to be any retreat. Disarmed, Nrth knew the only weapon available to him was the dagger length piece of wood still in the wolf. A desperate gambit, he leaped at the beast, wrapping his arms around its neck, grasping the exposed impromptu handle of his “blade”. The beast bucked widely, taking their struggle farther and farther from solid ground and out into the waiting embrace of the cracked lake surface. With a deafening crunch, the ice gave out and both were lost to the foul depths. This time it was the wolf’s claws that struck topside of the frigid waters. Wasting no time and showing no effort, the beast rose from the waters with a near dead Nrth still attached to its back. With one more buck, the wolf freed itself of the weakened passenger, and wasting no time, it pounced upon his limp form. With the last bit of strength Nrth had left, he slammed the freed chunk of wood into the beast’s eye. This was far more pain than even the beast could ignore, and it raised its head, howling in pain. Losing all but a sliver of his humanity, Nrth drove his claw like hands into the wolf’s shoulders and sank his teeth into its exposed throat, biting with every last bit of force he could muster. There was no thought or plan, or even a hope of survival, just sheer primal rage, using the fighting style of the wild he had seen so many beasts of Fenris use before. Tasting blood and fur, Nrth held on while the much larger beast winced and shook. Nrth had no chance of downing the beast, it’s large and powerful neck could not be torn out so easily, but it submitted nonetheless. It was badly wounded and disoriented by the loss of its eye and the freezing cold waters left it weakened and a bit numb. The wolf laid down on its side, wincing until Nrth released it. Backing away slowly, they faced each other, neither showing signs of aggression, nor fear. Both felt their life could end here and now at the others claws and teeth, but out of this hate didn’t grow, but respect. Their stare lasted for the next few hours as Nrth rebuilt the fire and the two regained feeling in their limbs. Neither faltered, but neither bared their teeth. Eventually, they slept as pack mates, side by side under a sky clouded only by the littered stars. One day, their fight might be continued and one might fall at the others teeth, but that only made their respect for each grow deeper. Nrthstar
we...we have a swear filter? I had no idea, sorry about that. I'm the kind of person though, right now, I'm fighting my hardest not to type out every awful word I know till I find one that isn't filtered. But I won't. Out of respect. Nrthstar
Thanks brothers, I've not sat down to try any sort of creative writing minus web comics and d&d adventures for a long, long time. After my wolves laid to waste some tyranids and daemons yesterday I came up with the idea to write something. It's a bleeding struggle for me, I need to be less wordy. Next I might attempt some blood claw stories. Forté
Less wordy? Forget that. You really got the picture across with your writing. Look forward to your blood claw stuff.
