millest
hi folks picked up some of the FW brass etched eagles and =I= icons for use on my marine projects and have a couple of quick questions. first with the icons such as the small eagles and the basic =I= whats the best way of applying them and painting them? would it be to stick them on prior to base coating and paint them up as part of the model or would it be to complete the model and then add them? secondly with the more detailed icons, such as the large squares with the =I= and some text etched in to the brass its pretty much the same question, do i place them on the model pre or post paint? any tips on using these things would be great as i'd like to get painting ASAP and the use of the brass etch and when to apply it is holding me up (well apart from the question of the 40mm or 28mm bases in my painting blog) cheers millest Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/229664-query-on-the-use-of-brass-etched-icons/ Share on other sites
Bannus
To get the strongest bond to your model, you should glue them on first. Primer will cover everything that needs to be oainted afterwards. SCC
For the little, fiddly bits I'd agree with Bannus, there can be some value to painting then gluing though. I've done this with some of the larger RG brass etch symbols - I dry fit them to the mini to get the curvature/fit correct, paint the mini and then (usually) spray the RG symbol white and glue it into place. It only really works with larger pieces of etch in my experience and I'd only do it when working with a colour very different to that of the rest of the model that would benefit from a different undercoat. glayvin34
I've found that it's a pain to get the icon on there in the right spot, so I put them on before I prime. I usually stick them on with white glue so I nudge them around, then squirt super glue along the edge, then clean off the excess super glue, then do a LIGHT coat of primer. The brass etched pieces have shallow detail so it's easy to obscure it with too much primer. I generally don't even cover the whole thing with primer, I put on just enough so that it changes the texture of the brass but not the color too much, that allows the next coat of paint to adhere without obscuring detail. millest
cheers for the feedback guys, i think i had come to the same conclusion when it comes to the small (and larger =I=) symbols that painting with them in place makes more sense. my problem is im thinking of using some of the plates like in the top left of this picture: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Images/Product...rge/inqetch.jpg on ones like that where the detail is etched in to the brass is priming in place better then gluing on afterwards? millest Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/229664-query-on-the-use-of-brass-etched-icons/#findComment-2758234 Share on other sites
SCC
The detail there should survive 'normal' priming from my experience with the RG etched brass from FW. The panels there are similar to the Rhino markings ones for the RG and I glued them in place during assembly and primed them with the rest of the model. The only reason not to do so would be if you think you'd have troubles painting that detail on a LR door or Stormraven or whatever if it was already in place.
